Mac mail flags not working - Big Sur
Since the Big Sur upgrade I can't flag emails. I use this facility a lot, so this is a real problem. Has anyone found a workaround?

I found these crazy steps that fixed the problem for me.

Joey, see if this works.
It was suggested to me today on MacRumors, and, although I don't quite know what it's doing, seems to have fixed my (similar to yours) problem:
--------------
1. Save your work and close all of your apps
2. Close Mail app
3. Hold the Shift key and open the Mail app
4. Close the Mail app (don't search or perform any other actions)
5. Hold the Shift key and open the Mail app (repeat of Step 3)
6. Close the Mail app (repeat of Step 4)
7. Restart your Mac
8. Open Mail app like you normally would
9. Try searching your mail

Missing Flags in Column View
To see your email flags while using Column Layout:
It may depend on whether you're in column layout or not. If you use the view where your main window is the inbox and new messages open in a separate window, then you can find the title bar (From..Subject...etc.). That's where you Control-click and the choices pop up. This is how that view looks, and it's what I use:
But if you have the layout where your messages open in a window next to your inbox/preview column, I don't know how you access the pop-up box. This is how that view looks:
Hope this helps to some extent!
This looks quite different on my Mac, but is not really the issue.
The set of smart mailboxes in the left column showing flagged email grouped by flag tyep does not work. In each flag grou uí see the number of flagged messages, but when i ckick the mail box it shows nothing, and soúddent´ky the number in the mailbox is shown as 0. If i close the list and reopen it the numbers are aguian ciórrect but the messages are not shown.
I have syncronized the emails and rebuilt the mailboxes, closed and reopened Mail, but to no help.
If i am in the inbox and click the falkged emails favourite nothing happens except the number of emails with that type of flag goes to 0. And frequently that whole mailbox disappears from the menu, however it at some later time suddenly reappears.
I also find many times the search functions completely fails, nothing happens although the searched for iten definitely is present.

Oh, I get it. You (emicotisg) must be using this layout for your inbox, with the little flag off to the right:
I use the column layout, with the flag to the left (and I can move the columns around). I think your flag is stuck on the right.
MotoBella, I assume your non-column layout looks like this, with the flag way over on the right:
But if you enable the side preview within non-column layout, the flags are more visible:
How you want your inbox to display is a matter of taste, but this might be a good compromise. (Side preview is available in the View menu.)
Tried that, but the flags are only visible if you open the email, which kind of defeats the purpose of flagging to identify them. Is there a way to make the flag visible on the unopened mail, similar to the way it was prior to Big Sur upgrade?
I right clicked on the title section above the email titles, and below 'Inbox' and checked 'Flags', and it seemed to work for me
I also right-klicked on something above the email titles and fiddled a little along and the colours disappeared and the flags came back. I think you can either have coloured lines over the emai message or the flags, not both.
justinec16,
You are a genius! I googled and could not find an answer to the unresponsive flag since the OS upgrade to Big Sur. Fortunately, I found this forum with your solution. No other forums in the past could resolve this issue which evidently is important to many users of Apple Mail. Thank you!
Turn on Column Layout (View> Use Column Layout) and then position the cursor within the row of column headers and Control+click.
For me that brings up the menu that is screenshotted in JustineC16's post above.
If you can't get the menu to come up at first, try putting the cursor right on top of "Subjects."
Worked for me- thank you justinec16, you are a genius!
For other clueless folks out there who don't know how to right click on a MacBook pro- right click by hitting the 'control' key & the trackpad at the same time.
Sorry...it must be me...but I cannot figure out what section you are right clicking on.....above the email titles...is this in the menu bar....and below inbox....there is no section there to click on....could you please provide more information?
thanks
David
That's right - and you can actually do this anywhere on the track pad, not just on right side - another alternative for right-clicking on mac keyboard is 'control+click'
You can also change some of these in system preferences/track pad
Yup, that worked for me as well - but how on earth are you supposed to stumble into that strange solution? At first I found your "section above the email titles" reference obscure. It's in the title bar. I clicked on the "FROM" and that done it. Thanks!!!!!
