Big Sur bluetooth problems

Since updating to Big Sur I'm having trouble with my bluetooth devices. They (mostly) connect OK, but I cannot play sound to my bluetooth speakers or headphones. The issue occurs on both of the Macs that I have updated so far.

Any advice?

Thank you very much, this solved the problem on both my iMac and my MacBook Pro.

Here is what I did:

  1. Open a folder window and in the "Go" menu from the toolbar at the top of the screen click on "Go to Folder..."
  2. When prompted enter the following: /Library/Audio/Plug-ins/HAL/
  3. You will be taken to the "HAL" folder in Finder, which in my case contained only one subfolder, called "InstantOn.driver". Delete this folder, entering your password as confirmation when prompted.
  4. Restart your Mac and hopefully everything will now work fine.

Poor show, Apple!

Apple - Can someone acknowledge there is an issue and commit to fixing the problem. It's really disappointing that there has been no official acknowledgment of the problem and no commitment to fixing it.

As both a user or the product and a shareholder of the company I find this very, very disappointing and not consistent with the Apple culture.

This Post was immediately monitored and removed as speculative ""Someone" is taking complete advantage of the COVID situation pushing a product that was not tested thoroughly. I hope someone who needs money takes all these posts, hire a lawyery and Sueheck that "Someone". "Someone" is not even monitoring these message boards and issuing a bulletin that the issue has been identified and will be fixed in the next update. I am sure they have a disclamier somewhere that says external devices are not guaranteed to work. AirPods Pros are not working with my 2017 MacBook Pro. Bose Q35 II only work via Bluetooth after I have wired a connection and them remove the wire after a week"

I have a new Bluetooth speaker that I got for Christmas that has issues connecting it to my Mac and if I turn the speaker off with the remote, turn it back on and reconnect it to my Mac, there is no sound. I checked the make sure the sound on my computer was turned up including the Bluetooth speaker’s volume. Every other device (iPad,iPhone and Apple TV works just fine with it. My other Bluetooth speaker works fine with my Mac I have macOS Big Sur and it gives me tons of problems with it.

The only way to fix bluetooth problems with big sur is to wipe the disk ( you will lose all your data, but this is the only way to do this) and reinstall the original software that came with your mac ( mine is El Captian) and then install that. Once that is done, reinstall the software, once set up, go to the internet and search " older versions of macOS". Select Mojave and download it, then install it. Once set up, try repairing your bluetooth devices. do not upgrade to catalina or big sur. Ignore any update reminders ( expect those for Mojave). I am using my bluetooth speaker and it is working well. hope this helps for some of you that have bluetooth issues.

There is no such file or directory like "/Library/Audio/Plug-ins/HAL/" on my mac...

I've used Sennheiser HD BT 350 for a couple of weeks without eny problems with my iMac (macOS 11.2.1). I have no idea what happened but now it drops the connection after a couple of seconds. Maybe this happened with the latest update?!

Tried to disconnect all other devices

Reconnect the headphones

Pairing the headphones again

Tried to "Reset the bluetooth module" " Factory reset all apple devices..." and "Remove all devices" from mac bluetooth menu.

Any ideas?

You can reset the Bluetooth module on your computer to fix

connection problems associated with the Big Sur update.

To reset the Bluetooth module on your Mac, follow these steps:

Step 1: Hold down both the Shift and Option keys, and then click on the Bluetooth icon on the top right side of your screen.

Step 2: Select Debug.

Step 3: Select Reset the Bluetooth module.

Step 4: Select OK.

Step 5: Restart your Mac, and your Bluetooth connection issues should be fixed.

I contacted apple a few weeks ago and there support solution was to plug it in using USB. What a load of runaround. I call to fix a bluetooth issue and they tell me use a cord. Garbage. Ever since I upgrade to Big Sur I have had Bluetooth issues. I can use only one bluetooth at a time, not sure if this is your issue. Also I have to goto bluetooth preferences rather than that top of the screen drop down menu they added which broke bluetooth, but hey looks pretty. Apple is turning into apple sauce . rotten.

Rwnance,

It's (not, actually) funny that I abandoned Microsoft products a little over 10 years ago because just attempting to interface with their operating software - and software in general - made me insanely frustrated. I had a friend with apple products who let me play with her iPhone 3. That experience in combo with having an iPod that I loved was all the salvation I needed to become an evangelized convert. And, those first 3~4 years were great! But, as with a death-by-1,000-cuts, gradually the small frustrations, inconveniences and - most of all - the removal of desirable features & replacement with undesirable features - started to accumulate. I'd say that the past 3 years or so I've noticed what seemed a bit of a trend a few years ago become an actual new course heading: they're steering directly into Microsoft waters. Slowly, Apple is becoming Microsoft.

So, I am a technology luddite. A big part of my fandom of apple products is that I didn't have to even approach being a software engineer or IT professional to use them; I wasn't perpetually abandoned to troubleshoot problems (that are incessant w/ Microsoft products) because, mostly, they just didn't exist with apple. They *didn't* used to exist with Apple products.

I've heard of Linux - has something to do with a penguin, no? I am at *that* level, lol.

Do you have any good pointers on where to start learning about it? I'm just barely beginning to feel that it may be time for me to move on from Apple, too.

Thanks!

V:)

I was serious about Linux and patience. I'm ok to use terminal apps and I'm a former (too many moons ago) mac hardware and software tech. I'm stuck with apple for may reasons and delving into starting over with linux for a professional art-music audio tool is absolutely not an option. Even with that, I really do not have the patience.

However:

If I were to start, I'd just get a Linux for Dummies book and depend on the online community to see it through. It has a stellar reputation for support.

This is a terrible paraphrase, but the gist is:

If you want an old pickup truck that you're going to also use for commuting and weekend trips, you get Windows

If you want a sports car that mostly runs itself but you can't open the hood, you get Mac (nowadays you can open the hood easily enough, but it will spit in your face first, then let you in)

If you want a multi configurable tank, space lasers, a jacuzzi and 10,000 real life online support personnel, you get linux.

To me, reading between the lines means I'd probably have to talk to a lot of people to use linux. Apple isn't quite there yet. Instead I just had to buy a tethered mouse.

to be fair, bluetooth *** on any platform. Apple in its dedication to innovation, has just stepped ahead and abandoned support early. (one of the things I'm have BT trouble with is an Apple Trackpad. What's up with that?)

On the bright side, I only have to hold out for 30 years or so. Life isn't that long.

Good luck,

Rick
