Big Sur bluetooth problems

Since updating to Big Sur I'm having trouble with my bluetooth devices. They (mostly) connect OK, but I cannot play sound to my bluetooth speakers or headphones. The issue occurs on both of the Macs that I have updated so far.

Any advice?

Thank you very much, this solved the problem on both my iMac and my MacBook Pro.

Here is what I did:

  1. Open a folder window and in the "Go" menu from the toolbar at the top of the screen click on "Go to Folder..."
  2. When prompted enter the following: /Library/Audio/Plug-ins/HAL/
  3. You will be taken to the "HAL" folder in Finder, which in my case contained only one subfolder, called "InstantOn.driver". Delete this folder, entering your password as confirmation when prompted.
  4. Restart your Mac and hopefully everything will now work fine.

Poor show, Apple!

So I have the same issues. The only difference is that I got a brand new MacBook Pro equipped with the M1 chipset. Right out the box it fails to correctly connect to a JBL Everest Elite 750NC. So no old drivers present...The fix proposed above (deleting HAL drivers) does not solve the Bluetooth issues with a brand new Mac pre-installed with Big Sur because the HAL drivers are just not present. I kindly request Apple to dive into this issue.

I have a M1 MacBook Pro 13" and I'm continually running into Bluetooth connectivity issues with AirPods Pro, Bose QC35, Apple Keyboard, Apple Trackpad, external speakers, and exercise equipment I connect a few times a week. Several times a week, when I try to use these devices, they just won't reconnect. In Bluetooth preferences, for the device that's having an issue, it's status will continually alternate between "Connected" and "Not Connected". The only way to get it connected is to remove it, put the device in discovery mode, and then connect it. It's incredibly frustrating and disappointing.

Performing a factory reset on my bluetooth speaker worked!

I tried about 8 different fixes to get my Megaboom 3 speaker to connect to my mac, and was resigned to just wait for the Big Sur update. But, last night, I thought I'd try perform a factory reset. For Megaboom you accomplish this by pressing the reduce volume "-" and the power button at the same time for about 6 seconds until you hear a tone. Then the speaker turns off.

When i powered it back on, my mac bluetooth detected it immediately, and it's been working great since.

I only have a mac keyboard and a mac trackpad connected w Bluetooth. The HAL plugins are deleted, there's no WiFi running, and I've reset the Bluetooth module.

I'm within a metre of the device.

I'm running a 2018 Mac Mini.

Just upgraded to Big Sur and now getting a constant connect/disconnect problem with the trackpad (every 10 seconds and less) and every few minutes with the keyboard.

How is this remotely ok?

RWNance, did you try the solution I provided. This worked for me when all else failed. This plist file gets rebuilt. My thought is there might be residual information from Catalina that is creating an issue in Big Sur. I hope it works.

"I was able to resolve the issue by deleting the file "~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Bluetooth.plist" followed by restarting the computer."

Got a 2015 MacBook here and deleting all plugins in "/Library/Audio/Plug-ins/HAL/" and restarting did not fix this for me. I have since reset the Bluetooth module and deleted all devices. The fresh connection with my Bluetooth headphones seems to be working now. I would recommend resetting the BT module. See: https://www.macrumors.com/how-to/reset-mac-bluetooth-module/

Resetting the bluetooth module, deleting the HAL plug0ins, factory reset of all bluetooth devices, and deleting (both, there was a previous one) plist files. So far the keyboard is staying connected but still no joy on the trackpad.

Retiring my trackpad until Apple feels that it's worth supporting.

I did a clean install of MacOS Sur on 2017 MacBook Pro 16 GB from an external flash drive. The Bluetooth issue for Audio, even with AirPod Pro is not working. So, not buying the AirPod Max. does not keep the sound alive. Bluetooth keyboard and mouse does not work smoothly and disconnects frequently. Now I use a unifyer for Logitech keyboard and Mouse. A new thing I have noticed. Everyday in the morning, when I wake up the laptop, the mouse starts jumping. Anybody has a fix? Please do not ask to delete the HAL directory or any drivers. I have no HAL folder.

Really disappointed with the latest update. I'm no longer able to stream music via airplay to my Denon CEOL, ehich has never been a problem in the past. Neither can I listen to music via bluetooth using my wireless Bose headphones. The devices appear to be connected but theres no sound despite showing as the output device. I managed to stream to my Denon CEOL for half a song before it cut out. Really suprised by this major flaw! In addition I have had to verify my machine as a new device on several occasions.

Has anybody had problems with video call audio or the zoom plug in? The only plug in I have is the zoom one. Not sure if deleting that will mae any difference.
