Big Sur bluetooth problems

Since updating to Big Sur I'm having trouble with my bluetooth devices. They (mostly) connect OK, but I cannot play sound to my bluetooth speakers or headphones. The issue occurs on both of the Macs that I have updated so far.

Any advice?

Thank you very much, this solved the problem on both my iMac and my MacBook Pro.

Here is what I did:

  1. Open a folder window and in the "Go" menu from the toolbar at the top of the screen click on "Go to Folder..."
  2. When prompted enter the following: /Library/Audio/Plug-ins/HAL/
  3. You will be taken to the "HAL" folder in Finder, which in my case contained only one subfolder, called "InstantOn.driver". Delete this folder, entering your password as confirmation when prompted.
  4. Restart your Mac and hopefully everything will now work fine.

Poor show, Apple!

ANYONE AT APPLE LISTENING?! MacOS Sur sure has Bluetooth issues. I have a 2017 Mackbook Pro with only Chrome and Edge added. No other apps. AirPod Pro does not maintain a constant audio stream. This my nth post about the issue and no response. I will get a reporter next, walk into an Apple store and drop the MacBook Pro after a demo of the issue. Be ready for a media blitz.

Don't look for HAL. open applications/utilities then open Terminal then copy and paste

sudo rm -rf /Library/Audio/Plug-ins/HAL/

Press return, it'll ask for a password that's your admin p/w.

I've been able to connect my Apple devices but I don't know how long they'll stay connected as I know others are saying they lose it.

Anyway give that a try, hope it works for you.

I’ve made progress, now got all Apple devices connected and importantly my Bose headphones though not speaker.

So open Applications/Utilities open Terminal file - a little coding window will open, copy & paste sudo rm -rf /Library/Audio/Plug-ins/HAL/

It’ll ask for a password, that’s your admin password, return and you’re done.

But I only had joy after clearing out any devices and resetting the Bluetooth module. Give it a restart and fingers crossed it should work.

Hope that helps - this is thanks to Michael Coslo

I do not see the "Go" menu anymore in my toolbar. Can you help? Please I spent 1 hour in the Apple Store and they could not help me! 2 of my speaker did not get recognised by my Bluetooth in my MacPro Book. They installed an Apple Keyboard and it got connected. They sent me home....without a solution for my speakers. I hope somebody can help me. Thanks.

What’s on that top menu bar, top of your screen now? If you can’t see Go on the menu bar maybe there’s something in the Dock & menu bar options in System Preferences. Last resort I’d re-install Big Sur and it should appear then I’d hope. Really surprised they couldn’t sort it in in the Apple shop but maybe try a chat with Apple support. Sorry I can’t help more. Good luck.

The problem is with Sound in System Preferences. Keep it open, select “Input” tab and keep it open. Headphones play okay. The moment you switch to “output”, headphone start acting jumpy, in and out. Apple, are you reading this? Install base OS, reinstalled Catalina and then Sur again on MacBook Pro 2017 . No difference. Issue exists. Resolve it! Apple!

I had no sound problem once after update to Big Sur. I restarted the Mac, holding down Option + Command + P + R

The audio was restored. On Catalina I had AptX codec....and I still have it on Big Sur, w/o having to do anything.

But the Option key + click bt + hover over listed hp no longer shows which codec is being used.

But I know for certain I am using AptX as when I pair my BeyerDynamic Amiron Wireless, start an audio track, the hp voice says AptX active.
