Big Sur bluetooth problems

Since updating to Big Sur I'm having trouble with my bluetooth devices. They (mostly) connect OK, but I cannot play sound to my bluetooth speakers or headphones. The issue occurs on both of the Macs that I have updated so far.

Any advice?

Thank you very much, this solved the problem on both my iMac and my MacBook Pro.

Here is what I did:

  1. Open a folder window and in the "Go" menu from the toolbar at the top of the screen click on "Go to Folder..."
  2. When prompted enter the following: /Library/Audio/Plug-ins/HAL/
  3. You will be taken to the "HAL" folder in Finder, which in my case contained only one subfolder, called "InstantOn.driver". Delete this folder, entering your password as confirmation when prompted.
  4. Restart your Mac and hopefully everything will now work fine.

Poor show, Apple!

My sister just bought new Macbook Air M1 that comes with Macos Big Sur ... the macbook cannot detect the Airpods. C'mon Apple, even your own line product cannot be detected, it must be something wrong with the Macos Big Sur.

I have Macbook Pro Late 2013... Install Macos Big Sur 11.0.1. Most bluetooth can connect but drop the connection.

I found 1 bluetooth headset (Sony) can be connected but the macbook cannot make the bluetooth headset as the output source ... the sound only comes from macbook internal speaker.

When on Macos Catalina, some bluetooth headsets produced crackling sound every several minutes .... I just ignored this problem since not all bluetooth headsets, some headsets were OK ... but now on MACOS BIG SUR, I am NOT SUR ANYMORE with Apple's products ...

Apple needs to update it soon.

EDIT DEC 01 2020: sof_gun's solution worked immediately for me! Saved me a trip out to bring the device in :)

I have this issue too! Apple Support told me to delete all Login Items in Settings and all unfamiliar items in Library/LaunchAgents, Library/LaunchDaemons, and Library/StartupItems. It didn't help though :(

For my situation, I'm suddenly having difficulty connecting my Beats Studio 3 (wireless) and my AirPods Pro to my MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015), and my iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2019), both running on version 11.0.1.

They connect for a second and immediately disconnect. Both the headphones and earbuds are at a full charge. Prior to contacting Support, I tried forgetting the devices, resetting, checking the firmware, and resetting the Bluetooth module.

I am not having the same issues on my iPhone 11. Both devices were working a couple weeks ago — the only change has been the Big Sur update.

Funny thing — my headphones and earbuds do connect properly to my sister's laptop (same specs). Strange!

I'm quite sure that's not the case, they didn't know so they made something up! There seem to be an awful lot of us who can't connect bluetooth after updating to Big Sur. As my MacBook ia new I'm quite sure it's nothing to do with hardware but everything to do with an update that's not been fully tested, It's really annoying me as I use my bluetooth speakers and headphones all the time and this MacBook can't even find Apple AirPods..

I've just started using a Mac less than a week, I can't believe I'll have to go back to my old PC if I want to listen via bluetooth.

So I have the same issues. The only difference is that I got a brand new MacBook Pro equipped with the M1 chipset. Right out the box it fails to correctly connect to a JBL Everest Elite 750NC. So no old drivers present...The fix proposed above (deleting HAL drivers) does not solve the Bluetooth issues with a brand new Mac pre-installed with Big Sur because the HAL drivers are just not present. I kindly request Apple to dive into this issue.

Resetting the bluetooth module, deleting the HAL plug0ins, factory reset of all bluetooth devices, and deleting (both, there was a previous one) plist files. So far the keyboard is staying connected but still no joy on the trackpad.

Retiring my trackpad until Apple feels that it's worth supporting.

Really disappointed with the latest update. I'm no longer able to stream music via airplay to my Denon CEOL, ehich has never been a problem in the past. Neither can I listen to music via bluetooth using my wireless Bose headphones. The devices appear to be connected but theres no sound despite showing as the output device. I managed to stream to my Denon CEOL for half a song before it cut out. Really suprised by this major flaw! In addition I have had to verify my machine as a new device on several occasions.

Has anybody had problems with video call audio or the zoom plug in? The only plug in I have is the zoom one. Not sure if deleting that will mae any difference.

I contacted apple a few weeks ago and there support solution was to plug it in using USB. What a load of runaround. I call to fix a bluetooth issue and they tell me use a cord. Garbage. Ever since I upgrade to Big Sur I have had Bluetooth issues. I can use only one bluetooth at a time, not sure if this is your issue. Also I have to goto bluetooth preferences rather than that top of the screen drop down menu they added which broke bluetooth, but hey looks pretty. Apple is turning into apple sauce . rotten.

Same issue here too! My AirPods and Beats will connect, then immediately disconnect. After spending an hour on the phone with Apple, I saw these posts and told them it was software and I would wait for the software patch. It amazes me how something like this could occur. Maybe they shouldn't update so often!! We all update and by the time it runs well, it's time for the next one! There was a time you didn't release a new version unless it was better than the previous version! Now we just say, it's new.
