I get a message "The File can't be found" when I plug in my iPhone via USB

When I connect my iPhone to my MacBook Pro via USB I get the message "The file can't be found" and I have to click "Ok" before the phone mounts in finder. This has only occurred since updating to Big Sur 11.0.1 and it doesn't seem to cause any other problems but is mildly inconvenient.

Anyone else experience this?

For me, this was fixed (from Apple Support):

Plug in iPhone (and, sure, dismiss the pop-ups).

Open up the Image Capture application.

In the … (circle w/ dots) to left of trash can icon.

Click on the dots, and, in the drop-down for ‘Connecting this iPhone opens:’

 select  ‘Other’.

In the ‘Finder’-like file navigator,

Use the left panel to select the Applications folder,

and then, in the right panel, select Image Capture.

Then, in the lower right of the navigator window…

click the ‘Choose’ button.

Close the Image Capture application (CMD-Q)

Try plugging the phone in again.  It should launch Image Capture, and

put up thumbnails of your photos.

If you don’t want that to happen…

Try re-doing the drop down for what to do upon connection…

and select ‘no application’

Oddly:  that’s probably where it was set when you started this cleanup!

For me… nothing happens on plug in now!  Just the way it was supposed to be!

And the pop-ups… they’re gone, too!

... at least... that all worked for me. on Big Sur 11.0.1 // iPhone6 12.4.9

I have a MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019), BigSur 11.1, connected to an Apple Thunderbolt Display (27").

I was experiencing the "The File can't be found" when plugging in my iPhoneX.

Yes, this worked for me. Thank you!

However...my SPEAKER SELECTION is now Swapping on disconnect:

While playing music (Apple Music or Spotify) and I disconnect my iPhoneX, my speaker selection switches from Display-speakers to MBP-speakers for about 2 seconds, then back to the Display-speakers. 🤷🏾‍♂️

This speaker-swap only happens when:

  • Music is actively playing
  • the Display-speaker is currently selected
  • and I disconnect the iPhone

I am constantly playing music on my current setup, connecting/disconnecting my phone the entire day. This only started happening after applying this fix.

Not sure if I should create a new thread for this issue.

This answer is not working for me. And I am super frustrated.

Problem number 1: What is the Image Capture Application? Is it on the iPhone?

This becomes all non-sensical if you don't know where to find the application.

Relax, help is coming ;)

You can find Image Capture app on your Mac (the screen where the "File can't be found" appeared).

If you hit command + space, Spotlight Search will show, and you can find Image Capture there, or in your Applications folder.

From then on, please follow the steps I did, it will make sense!

Have a nice weekend! :)

Image Capture is a feature on a laptop or desktop to take a photo of your screen. You can easily find it by going up to the right hand corner on your computer (not phone) and you’ll see a “spyglass”-and icon to ask a question. Type: Image Capture, this will open up the application for you. This seems to be the application where there’s a glitch. I’m no computer wiz, but I read and slowing followed the instructions and fixed my husband computer. We wasn’t able to plug in his iPhone to back it up to iTunes, because that warning box kept popping up. This above fix will take care of it. Hope this helps you :-)

Image Capture should be found in your Applications folder, at the top level of your disk drive. Another way to start it up is with Spotlight ... hold down 'command' and the space bar together, and start typing in "Image Capture." As soon as it finds it, you can just hit the return key to launch it.

Image Capture is a great way to pull copies of your photos off your iPhone or iPad to wherever you want to have them on your Mac, without going through the Photos app.

Hi Old Toad,

I get so many popups, I can't even open image capture much less edit the setting in the "three dots". They come so fast, I cannot close them and they eventually crash my Macbook Air. There are so many I really can't do anything, include see my phone in Finder.

I spent more than an hour in chat support with Apple reps tonight. No help at all. I finally gave up. I can't believe this has been going on for a year. This is why I don't like to download updates from Apple. I never had this problem when I wasn't using Big Sur. Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks.

Hi, I am a new user of a Macbook Air 2020 intel core processor MacOS Big Sur 11.3 and I have a problem where I can remove the tab saying File can't be found. I tried restarting my MacBook but it seems to stay. I don't own any iPhones anymore since I switch to Samsung last 2017. When I was backing up files on my Samsung smartphone. That tab popped up and from there I can't remove it even if I restarted my macbook. Please help :( . Thank you :) .
