Whenever I join a Google meet through Safari, there’s an audio issue where there a crackling noise and I can’t make out what is being said. It works fine on chrome but I prefer Safari and this issue has only started when I updated to MacOS Big Sur. Currently to fix this issue, I have join and rejoin multiple times and try and plug and unplug my earphones.

What worked for me is to install Safari Technology Preview.

Install the second one, it's for free. It solved the crackles. However as it is a separate browser, you will need to re-log in to everything. (I didn't want to use Chrome as it is slow.)
I think they will later solve it in the main Safari also.

Have your daughter install Firefox and use that for Google Meet. I have meetings almost every day on Meet. Safari and Chrome are broken, but Firefox works perfectly. Hopefully Apple will address this soon.
Yeah that happens to me too. When I first join the meeting, other people's audio sounds robotic. A workaround that I found was to pause and resume the tab from accessing audio mic/camera using either of the microphones (screenshot below).
Keep in mind, this doesn't always work for me so you'll have to play around a little... but come on Google and Apple I really expected better.

Which update? 11.1? After installing that update it went from bad to worse. Now Google Meet doesn't work at all with Safari or Chrome. I can join the meeting but I get no incoming/outgoing audio or video now. I had to install Firefox as that's the only browser of the three that works now.

Use the Google Chrome browser instead of Safari when using Google meet. It appear to solve the issue. Install Google Chrome browser and then copy the meeting link and paste into Chrome. Appears to solve the issue.
Update: Its fixed an update after bug Sur has fixed this issue it should work fine now
it's not fixed for me but there's an app called MeetInOne and I find that it works great without the weird choppy audio
I think this is the solution because I am doing online classes on Google Meet and I couldn't hear anyone in the class, so I turned off "Enable Content Blocks" and start hearing everyone.
So sorry to hear that. My issue was fixed after the next MacOS update was rolled out. I suggest you use Google Chrome for her meets until your issue can be resolved.
Found today that if I put up with the annoying crackle for about 5 minutes and try to lip read, the sound eventually comes through. I've checked and its not a memory/CPU issue so must be a bug in Sur. Please release an update soon. Looks like there are quite a few problems with this first release.
OK if you have m1 not good still to many problems I went from MacBook pro 2015i5 to MacBook air i3 just change I had too or buy a anthor laptop I am buy macs i don't like windows use chrome it will work its a big it works fine for me in sfafri update and should fine if not use chrome or ms edge
only MacBook Air 2020 not MacBook Pro 2020 or late then you need a speaker replacement
Apparently, my daughter was using Safari. Once she switched to Google Chrome there was no more glitching for us!

Same issue here with a brand new Macbook Air. Sound is fine on Facetime and Zoom, but get a crackling noise with Google Meet. Impossible to use. I make the call on my iphone and there are no issues, but would like to have this resolved of course.
