Whenever I join a Google meet through Safari, there’s an audio issue where there a crackling noise and I can’t make out what is being said. It works fine on chrome but I prefer Safari and this issue has only started when I updated to MacOS Big Sur. Currently to fix this issue, I have join and rejoin multiple times and try and plug and unplug my earphones.

What worked for me is to install Safari Technology Preview.

Install the second one, it's for free. It solved the crackles. However as it is a separate browser, you will need to re-log in to everything. (I didn't want to use Chrome as it is slow.)
I think they will later solve it in the main Safari also.
The same issue I am having. Was on the phone with Apple support and of course we play a YouTube video and sound plays, so it must be me not the computer. It is frustrating, especially when I paid over $4,000 and have to call in for conference calls. I am going to try calling in in on Chrome, at least I have something to try. This is the kind of thing I would expect with a cheap computer - got an expensive computer and Apple support and still can't fix it- uhhhh!
I just bought the new MacBook with the m1 chip and since than whenever I try to open meet from safari there is a weird cracking noise . I thought this problem was just on my computer which apparently is not the case. I have classes to attend so please fix this problem. Using google Chrome is much harder for me than using safari because it takes more time.
We have a MacBook Air. Whenever my daughter is on Google meet with her school the audio is crackling and she can’t understand. She has to put on closed caption.
called Apple twice and brought into store. They have no idea. Said it’s a Google problem. My daughter in tears as we bought this in September for her.

Hi there! I just came across this as I am having the same difficulties. I am using google meet extensively due to my university lectures. However, since upgrading my laptop with the new M1, I have been having these same audio issues?
I wondered if there was a problem with Safari/Google meet with the new Apple M1?
I thought I would give it a couple weeks. Still no luck on Safari, but Chrome seems to be working fine so I just use Chrome now for any online meetings I have on there. However Dr_Tech has sent a response which could be a solution?
I have the same issue but only after downloading Big Sur. its infuriating.
I started to have the same issue right after I dowloaded Big Sur which is a bit annoying. I was thinking I was the only one.
Same issue. And I haven't updated to Big Sur, merely allowed automatic update of Safari to 14.0.1 - this is annoying... I have to switch to Chrome all the time to run google meet meetings.

This issue only occurs in Google meets while on Safari. This has only started happening after MacOS Big Sur. It works fine on Chrome for me though, however I would rather use Safari for my meets.

Wow really? Thanks for the info but I’m not that keen on downloading a separate browser for my meets😅 I guess I’ll stick with Chrome until the next update
