I updated to Big Sur on my MacBook Pro yesterday. There don't seem to be any HP printer drivers that are compatible. Now I can't print. Anyone else find a fix? I have tried the drivers I can find on HP site. None seem to be compatible.

Thank you for your suggestion. I tried all the options you suggested with no luck, but I finally solved the problem last night. I downloaded and installed Gutenprint as mentioned elsewhere in this thread, and then - this is the important bit - I turned on printer sharing in the system preferences menu. After than the 6l driver appeared and was auto-selected in the driver options menu when re-installing the printer. I hope this helps others to solve the problem. Thanks everyone!

I have followed instructions on the HP support pages. Nothing works: removing and reinstalling drivers, etc. I keep getting the message 'waiting for printer to become available'.
Only thing that works: order a print from e.g. word, restart the computer, and the first doc from the queue will be printed, even before the computer shows the login screen. Only the first doc, not the others docs.
HP still needs to respond.
I have a MacBook Pro 2017, Big Sur 11.0.1, and an HP8600 allinone officejet.
I removed all HP software and files from my MacBook Pro with 11.0.1, restarted, plugged my HP 1012 in and added it as I would normally add a printer in System Preferences, using generic driver and it's currently working

Unfortunately, my problem is not solved with that.
I installed that 5.1 driver, tried to print from Word, same result: no print, "printer waiting to become available".
Restarting the macbook works: the print gets printed even before the laptop shows the login screen.
After that, trying to print again from Word, same old result: no print, "printer waiting to become available".
All the time scanning works fine with the same allinone that I have (HP8600 officejet).
I am using a Macbook Pro 2017, MacOS 11.1 Big Sur with latest update, USB connection.
Can you please explain how to do this? I have a very old HP laser jet 6l and after updating to Big Sur it is not one of the choices in the driver menu when I try to add the printer. The computer sends a document to print but I just get a couple of lines of numbers. The genetic postscript option doesn’t work. Any ideas?

The HP LaserJet 6L is a printer with a parallel port, so I assume that you are using a USB-to-parallel adapter, or an Ethernet print server.
Anyway, the printer supports PCL, so it should be possible to choose/use a number of other drivers for older HP LaserJet printers (such as 4/5/6 models). You could also try a generic PCL driver.
If necessary, you may want to try the (Dec 11, 2020) HP Printer Drivers v5.1 for macOS:

Open >System Preferences>Software Update
Update: HP Printer Software 5.1 should now be becoming available through Software Update to fix this issue.

I do not have this option. It says that I am up to date. I just downloaded it on Monday, 11/16. What are the alternatives?
I have the same problem. I can print, but I can't scan. HP people won't talk to me because my printer is out of warranty.

I installed the Gutenprint driver, and my HP2100 now prints!
I've only tested it on basic tasks, but at least I can print stuff!
If you're using Bootcamp + Windows, there is no problem!

I finally downloaded HP Smart, landed on my dock, tested print, tested scan and even tested fax all worked flawlessly with MACOS Big Sur 11. So thrill !
