No HP4100 printer after Big Sur

After upgrade to Big Sur, I can't find my old HP4100 laserprinter. Last resort was to update printer drivers trough Apple support, downloaded HewlettPackardPrinterDrivers.dmg from there, but the installer doesn't work. The error message is "this volume doesn't fit the requirements for this update.

No driver, no printer>no printing.

Do you have a solution for me?

Hey your welcome!

I have contacted AppleCare, you should too. Aside from that …

Make sure your HP 4100 is connected to ethernet, turned on and has a valid IP address inside your local network.

Then open System Preferences

Click Printers and Scanners Preferences

Click + to add a printer

Click the Globe icon at the top of the "Add Printer" window

Enter the IP address of your HP 4100 Ethernet printer

For the Protocol choose HP Jetdirect - Socket

Queue can be left blank

Name can be anything you want, "HP4100" is ok

Location can be left blank

For the Use drop down it should auto populate with "Generic Postscript Printer". If it doesn't auto populate select it manually.

The Generic driver will at least allow printing.

If you are not sure what your printer's IP address is you can type arp -a in the terminal window. You might be able to use the MAC address to help identify it or you might be able to use your router web interface to find it or use the printer's own control panel, navigate through the menu and print the configuration. The print will have the IP address of the printer.

If you need more help please let me know — the Generic Postscript Printer Driver should work but you might miss out on some of the printer's features as this driver can't tap into those specific features the HP 4100 has.

Let me know, I am watching this post.

Remove your printer queue jobs

Reset print system if necessary:

I remain unable to choose the HP driver software, only the generic driver. Shame on me I have not restarted the MacBook Air running Big Sur, I have an excuse though, it's my wife's computer 😊.

So if I understand, you uninstalled the HP software using the HP uninstaller and then you followed up with a clean install of the HP Printer Software as made available from https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1888, is that correct?

You then restarted the Mac and Printer to conclude with a now proper working resolution. Is this all correct? Does it mean that you can choose the HP driver or are you only able to choose the Generic driver?

I am delighted to learn that you have solved the issue to your satisfaction. (The HP 4100 is a very good printer, it's built like a tank.)

If you have managed to use HP's own driver versus the Generic Postscript Printer driver then you absolutely solved this issue and have an expected and ideal software configuration for the HP 4100.

If you have a little bit of time could you please reply and validate my remaining questions.

Thank you

Thanks for the reply, yes I eventually found it, in fact an HP webpage links to Apple's own DL1888 support page.

I was on with AppleCare and HP. In summary HP said the device is obsolete (even though it works perfectly fine). AppleCare said I should create a new user account, reinstall in that new account and try again, if it fails to reinstall Big Sur. I'll do it but I don't think it will work.

When installing the drive from DL1888 support page here is what happens in order:

Then I click on Show Certificate;

Even if I turn on "Always trust "Software Update"" and set the certificate and X.509 Basic Policy to "Always Trust" and click continue it results in;

"The volume does not meet the requirements for this update."

Clicking "Close" abandons the installation.

I think Apple and HP have to sign a new certificate with an expiry date far into the future or some printers will simply not work with all their features under Big Sur.

@lostaccount Thx, your answer in very clear, helpful but unfortunately my printer doesn't work yet. I think I have to inform Apple about this issue, with al the info you already created, and hope that they wil act.

When you have a link or tip for sending this to Apple support, I would be great full... Ab

Hello Alex,

Apple support NL couldn't give me an answer about the certificate but after contacting HP support NL, I got the same solution that you gave me. I just tried to make the connection and it works! Why the solution didn't work first, was that after upgrading to Big Sur, I had to reboot the printer also. First I couldn't select the postcript option, now I can!

By the way, I succeeded to find the printer trough the IP option.

Thanks for your help, this is why forums work !

I was actually on to that a few days ago but I hadn't yet gathered all the paths nor shared this thought because I wanted to share it only once I found all necessary files and respective paths.

Do you have a link highlighting the steps taken for a successful resolution so that native drivers can be used or are you suggesting entire directories get replaced. Maybe the installer script could also be reviewed to see what goes where.

Anyway, I am hopeful a proper fix comes out. Not fixing this will just result in more land being filled.
