External mic not working with Apple Facebook app

This is corrected now with the IOS update a couple of weeks ago feb 2021. There is no need to use irig app anymore, though I’m grateful it was there. I’ve gone back to just using MOTIV audio app to adjust the gain and monitor levels. It will recognize my external mic now even before starting FB live.

Despite some people regaining confidence I’m still plugging in after stream has started. Both on iPad and iPhone and also on both iRIG and rode SC4 That way you can’t go wrong. I get my misses in the other room to confirm it’s all good.

I tried the Prism Live app as suggested by another user. I was able to stream live to YouTube and Facebook simultaneously and the external mic worked like a charm.

Plugging it in after the video started worked on my 11 Pro, but event better- I used the Prism Live app with my Rode and it was perfect. No audio issues at all. Good luck!

I also concur for iPhone 12, IOS 14.4 and latest Facebook version 303. Wait 6 seconds, plug in microphone, you’re all set. Let’s keep on top of Facebook until they solve it properly.

Are you all plugging the Røde adapter into the lightning adapter after starting Livestream or plugging both adapters at once. I have noted plugging only the Røde adapter in after starting seems to work ok.

OK one more test. I remembered that I have access to an iPhone 6 with a standard headphone jack. I did the test with that and it did not work, and that iPhone just got updated today to 12.5.1, so the problem is obviously not with 14.3, but is definitely a problem with Facebook. Hopefully if everyone will report this problem Facebook will fix it.

I ran a one hour church service today on Facebook Live. Used an iPhone 11 Pro with Rode Wireless Go connected to our mixer. Used iRig Recorder running in the background (start then minimize then go to FBLive). Worked flawlessly. Video is posted at fbccambria.org if you want to see the result.

Seems to me that’s correct. All apps work with an external microphone except for Facebook.

Anyway, the iRig workaround works and using Streamlabs OBS even worked with my iPhone XS wireless with NDI app.

My audio worked connected with the iRig Pro Duo to the lighting Jack of the iPhone.

I have just tested FB Live with my iPhone XS, iRig Pro Duo after the latest FB app update

Without the iRig Recorder App the FB doesn’t take in the external audio input.

With FB opened i started iRig recorder and it worked immediately.

I second this post....just tried it and the external mic now works when plugged in...AFTER starting Facebook Live. I was used an iPhone 12 running iOS 14.4. I didn't use any other external apps like iRigg or Streamlabs.

It did not work having the mic plugged in first and then starting the Live....at least it's back useable again.

I feel for you and can sympathise, had the same happen to me. I’ve found that in order to have consistent results, you have to replicate a sequence exactly. To do so, I start by turning my phone off, then on, then the exact sequence. In my case turn Facebook on, then plug-in microphone, then start livestream. If I vary that sequence in any way such as not turning phone off and on before doing sequence, opening other apps, plugin in before starting Facebook, etc. I get mixed results... hard to replicate successful ones...

Rode SC6-L Ultracompact 2x2 Lightning Audio Interface for iOS Device allows me to monitor audio in when setting up and recording, eliminates the Apple dongle for my iPhone and also allows for 2 mic inputs (which I have not used).

Thanks PapayaCanada, I tested it with iPhone 12 Mini, iOS 14.4, Facebook 306.0 and had good results: I didn't start iRig, but started Facebook, plugged in the external microphone, and then started livestreaming - and it worked! When I disconnected the audio at the mixer, it continued to use the external microphone (i.e. it did not switch to the internal microphone), which is good. This means we can have good audio when we're speaking, and can disconnect it when we're playing music that we don't want to broadcast. One thing I didn't do, which I should have, is reconnected it to make sure the external microphone was still working...that it could handle being unplugged and replugged...

I updated all my other apps too, but have kept automatic app updates disabled...as you say I will never update the Facebook app unless I KNOW that it will continue to work. If someone is willing to test FB updates to ensure that the fix persists and would let us know, that would be great...but it's asking a lot since we depend on it...
