External mic not working with Apple Facebook app

I use Facebook Live daily to post videos and have been using a Rode Wireless Go microphone plugged into the phone (iPhone SE - 2020) successfully for many months for my audio. After the iOS 14.2 update now any external mic will not work with the Facebook app, but all those same microphones will work fine to record audio in other audio / video apps. The mics will also work fine with Android phones. It seems to be isolated to the Apple Facebook app after the update. Any ideas?

IT'S FIXED!!! FINALLY!!!

I've just done several tests and Facebook iOS version 305.0 WORKS without having to use ANY other program AND the mic can be plugged into the iPhone BEFORE you start Facebook Live! Using an iPhone 11 Pro Max with the Apple lighting adapter and a simple lapel mic.

One iPhone secret you may not know. If you go to updates, and PULL DOWN ON THE SCREEN AND HOLD FOR 3-5 SECONDS, then let go, OFTEN you will be see many more updates show up. I have had it show maybe 2 updates, or even none, and after pulling down the screen and letting go I've suddenly had 20+ updates sometimes show up.

Same here.... tried a lot of things.. But cable/mic works fine when I connect my Pioneer DDJ800 mixer and record with the dictafoon app and camera/video app! But starting FB live I get the sound of the internal mic... with all the other sounds.

Start FB Live, the put the cable of your external mic/mixer in the iPhone. The. You get only the sound of your external mic/mixer.

Hoping it’s fixed soon.

Thank you for doing that! I also contacted them and said the following, I will update if I hear back from them:

Since the most recent Facebook App and Apple IOS system update, any external microphone audio stopped working when doing Facebook Live streamings. Every single app on my phone is able to recognize and record with my external microphone, except the facebook app. I'm not the only one experiencing this glitch, there is hundreds of people who have experience the same. Please look at this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252051208

Please resolve this issue! This is hurting my ability to rely on Facebook for live videos, otherwise I will have to lead my audience away from Facebook and onto other platforms like Youtube.

I tested livestreaming the Mass on YouTube, and it turns out that Facebook is better! 1) 720p on Facebook through the great iPhone 12 Mini camera is better than 1080p on YouTube through the Logitech 920. 2) It could be because my MBP is eight years old, but the video is jerky like a 1920s movie and out of sync with the audio. 3) With the right audio setup, Facebook is only a little noisier than using an audio interface. As you know, it's again possible (for now anyway) to use an external mic (i.e. mixer) with Facebook if you also setup the iRig app. 4) Better zoom control with the iPhone. 5) It's hard to find previously recorded livestreams on YouTube, you really need to know where to look. 6) Scheduling livestreams in advance thinking they will start automatically doesn't work.

Bottom line: we'll move back to Facebook! Gosh, what a lot of time and expense trying to get a good solution. I don't relish killing my iPhone battery livestreaming, but it's certainly worth it for my people. What I would LIKE would be livestreaming from my iPhone right to our webpage, but I'm not quite smart enough for that. Maybe I'll check with the archdiocese tech team to see if they know how.

I am wondering if you took a call or used some other app that caused the mic to disengage?

When I live stream my Sunday school lesson, I make sure to go to "Airplane mode" before launching iRig or even when I (without iRig) delay plugging mic into the phone after starting FB live.

I prefer the iRig work around because I hate the snap, crackle, pop created when plugging in the mic after starting the FB live stream.

Another suggestion: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1428704-REG/rode_sc6_l_mobile_interface_for_apple.html

Rode SC6-L Ultracompact 2x2 Lightning Audio Interface for iOS Device allows me to monitor audio in when setting up and recording, eliminates the Apple dongle for my iPhone and also allows for 2 mic inputs (which I have not used).

Pricey, yes but reliable and gives me the peace of mind knowing all is working during the live stream.

Good luck!

Tommy
