External mic not working with Apple Facebook app

I use Facebook Live daily to post videos and have been using a Rode Wireless Go microphone plugged into the phone (iPhone SE - 2020) successfully for many months for my audio. After the iOS 14.2 update now any external mic will not work with the Facebook app, but all those same microphones will work fine to record audio in other audio / video apps. The mics will also work fine with Android phones. It seems to be isolated to the Apple Facebook app after the update. Any ideas?

IT'S FIXED!!! FINALLY!!!


I've just done several tests and Facebook iOS version 305.0 WORKS without having to use ANY other program AND the mic can be plugged into the iPhone BEFORE you start Facebook Live! Using an iPhone 11 Pro Max with the Apple lighting adapter and a simple lapel mic.


One iPhone secret you may not know. If you go to updates, and PULL DOWN ON THE SCREEN AND HOLD FOR 3-5 SECONDS, then let go, OFTEN you will be see many more updates show up. I have had it show maybe 2 updates, or even none, and after pulling down the screen and letting go I've suddenly had 20+ updates sometimes show up.

Something maybe related to help Apple or FB fix the problem: As others have noted, November-ish external audio in FB Live stopped working from our iPhone 11Pro until we started plugging in the lightning cable after the stream started. Additionally, if we started the broadcast with the rear camera then switched to selfie mid-stream, the audio would revert to internal. Unplugging and plugging in the cable switched back to external--annoying but manageable once we figured it out. Now since either FB's latest update or 14.3 or both, nothing works. External audio simply doesn't work. For now we're working around by using an Android phone (sorry Apple) or maybe Prism Live (sorry FB).


Please fix this!

“Since the last update Facebook live does not recognize the external microphone connected to the phone. Previously the phone connected to the external microphone if it was connected at the beginning of the live stream but lately this does not work anymore. Reached out to Apple tech support but as video recording with external microphone works fine in other apple apps, they suggested to reach out to fb instead. In this time of pandemic it is essential for people to be able to connect to others and if Facebook does not make improvements in this then it doesn’t serve the community which has been of outstanding importance these months...”

I have, and it still doesn’t work. Please send a problem report in the Facebook app under “live“ so that they see that this is a problem and get reports from as many people as possible. As I mentioned elsewhere, I have tried this both with iOS 14.3 as well as 12.5.1 and the problem exists with both so the problem obviously is with the Facebook app and not with Apple.

And this goes on and on. This is egregious for neither Facebook or Apple to take any action on what is a major problem. I have posted here a couple of times already. This is bush league for nothing to be fixed with this problem. The only work around that I've find to this point is to start FB live then plug in the device- which creates a crackling sound. It low-class and looks like the operator has no idea what they are doing. I think this needs to be elevated to the next level- on social media and traditional media. Maybe "bad press" will garner some attention to what would seem like a fundamental responsibility from these two organizations. I will get in contact with national desks at the major networks and see where it goes.

The problem is NOT WITH APPLE, but with FACEBOOK.


IF the mic works with all other apps, even dictating into Facebook, then it's obvious where the problem lies.


Just update Facebook to version 3.03, then start FB live, and immediately AFTER starting, plug in your mic in the lightning port, and it will work.


Or use the iRig app in the background, but now you don't even need that.
