Preview Support for Webp images?

I understand that png files are the standard for web-based images on a Mac, but websites are increasingly using webp. Why can't MacOS store and display webp images in Preview? Would it really be that hard for Apple to add Webp support?

How to use webp image files in FCP? I received a FCP library that includes some images with the .webp extension. Apparently it's a Google image format. They show as Missing Plugin when selected in the browser or timeline. The producer who worked on the library doesn't know/remember how he's able to use them on his machine. Is there a FCP plugin or is webp enabled at the MacOS level? I found a GitHub project that enables Preview to show webp files. Is this what's needed? Any advice? Thanks, Terry

webp images in FCP This was previously addressed, but I still have a question: I downloaded an image from Google and I am forced to save as a .webp When I import this image to FCP, everything seems OK. Any reason that I shouldn't proceed? This community and apple.com help suggest that the format is not compatible and that conversion will be necessary. Has this changed?

,webp files Yes, there is another thread about this, but Apple won't let me reply to it. Since Big Sur, if I drag and drop images from the web to my desktop - memes, for example - Safari adds .webp to the image without asking for my authority. No site I frequent will take .webp images; they are just grayed out. the files come out like this: meme.jpg.webp. If I just remove the .webp from the file in finder, they aren't grayed out, but the sites say something like File Is Not an Image As Expected. So, I have to take screen shots of the image in Finder or Preview. There has to be a better way. Why is Apple foisting this worthless format on us anyway? I would like to prevent this from ever happening. Or maybe I'll have to use another browser. Thanks in advance.

Probably for the same internal Apple decision to not support SVG within Preview. You have a feedback option in this thread.
