Mail search is broken after Big Sur update

Search always returns 0 results even if the message is at the top of the mailbox and staring you in the face. It is the same for iCloud and Gmail. It's the same for every mailbox (folder). It's the same for searching within Mail directly or from Spotlight, mail messages no longer show up in search.

Update. It seems to be working OK now.


I did a cold reboot and then after launching my profile with no apps running, I just left it for a few hours (with Caffeine running to prevent the computer from going to sleep and no NAS drives mapped) and afterwards search in mail worked and has continued to do so for the last couple of days.


It must take a finite time for the indexes to rebuild and I wonder if using an app while this process is happening somehow causes the indexing to fail. It would explain why it wasn't a problem on my MBP as there isn't nearly as much content on that machine and so presumably that indexes faster.
