Homepod mini handoff not working

I purchased this specifically for the handoff feature as working from home I thought it would be pretty cool to be able to hold my phone near it while on call or playing a podcast and have it transfer over without going through the Bluetooth menu but after setting up the homepod mini, it just doesn't work at all. The "transfer to homepod" feature is enabled.

Also, when I tap the top, it just starts playing U2 music but not sure why it does that. What app would that be playing from/ Any way to disable that?

HomePod mini, 14

Aside from the issue with Handoff, what is really annoying is that when you contact support (regardless of the issue), the answer is always, "Nope, never heard of this one before." There go two or so hours of your time jumping through hoops like a trained seal and taking your device apart like an over-filled closet. When you're off the phone, you're left to reconstitute the thing. More often than not, the problem is a software issue that only Apple can fix and yet they never admit it on the call. I love their products, have a ton of them, but these problems are happening on so many devices and so often that it's really getting hard to pony up the money for Apple because "It Just Works" because so often it doesn't.

Your exactly right, I had that same conversation a couple days ago regarding the homepod mini handoff problem, they say they never heard of the problem, I tell them theres thousands and thousands of the same problem and complaints on the forums. I tell them to go look, how can there be so many of these problems and you can pull up a million complaints about the homepod mini handoff but they havent heard of it. So what will happen it will magically disappear in an upcoming update and they wont say anything. And honestly Im sick and tired of the same old response, wipe your phone and restore as new and try it, if it resolves your problem put one app on at a time to see what may be affecting it...**** NO!!!...by time I would finish the next iphone will be out thats a non starter for me. They have to figure out a better way, develop a diagnostics on the phone that will determine problems instead of making us figure out what the problem is all the time.

I am using a (new) 12 Pro Max running 14.2.1 (Update only for all iPhone 12 models). At Apple's instructions, I wiped the phone, set it up manually as new (with no backup info), and it worked briefly. Then, again as instructed by Apple Tech at the beginning of the third call (3rd hour), I used the most recent backup to set up the phone, and Handoff failed. Just as JimCzer above, it was suggested that I just use it without any Apps. A new phone that can't use any apps other than an iffy Handoff function, not what I paid for!!!

Lol....okay my wifi is on and it doesn’t work, I’ve spent over 5 hours with Apple and went through about every scenario possible with no luck. Theres obviously a wide spread problem that will need to be fixed with a software update and wifi is not the issue with 99.9 percent of the problems I’ve been reading about.

Mr. Czer, My comment regarding insight was not in response to your entry. It was a response to a prior entry suggesting that we need to "turn on wifi to use" Handoff. Yes, it was sarcastic, but I thought the offhanded wifi comment was ludicrous, especially in light of all that everyone here has written about the ongoing problems and frustration we are encountering with this issue.

Im with you man, I agree. I just get frustrated on the fall back apple ALWAYS has, wipe your device and start as new. I refuse to do that because even if it does resolve my problem what am I supposed to do put one app on at a time to see what may affect it?...If would take me 6 months to get all my apps back on. Apple should develop some kind of diagnostic tool to determine what the problem is instead of making us wipe or device and start as new especially when everything worked perfectly on the previous phone. Why should I have to go through all that when I spend over $1500 for a new phone? From reading in the forums even when people wipe their device and start as new some work and some dont some work for a brief time and stop working. My daugthers brand new iphone 12 pro max never has worked and she only has a few apps on it and my iphone pro max with lots of apps on it works but often doesnt. Sometimes when the handoff doesnt work I manually connect music to it through airplay then it kickstarts the handoff and it starts working so there is obviously many bugs they need to work out but stop telling people to wipe their device and go through all the heahaches because they need to push out a software fix at this point...lets just hope it is a software issue and not hardware because if it is you know what that means.

I got it, it was tongue and cheek response, Im cool with it. Im just super frustrated with this. I purchased three of the homepod mini’s for the main reason of the handoff feature after purchasing three iphone 12 pro max 512gb for us in my family and purchasing an upgraded macbook air M1 so after spending about 10k in the past couple weeks with Apple I have to go through the headaches of wiping restoring replacing devices with no success. There are several bugs that need to be fixed and its obvious its a software issue and apple at this point needs to stop telling people to wipe their devices and start as new, for me thats a non-starter. I refuse to wipe and start as new when the backup that was restored from was an iphone pro 11 max to a iphone 12 pro max. The iphone pro max 11 had zero problems so now Im supposed to wipe my iphone pro 12 max because the restore may be affecting my handoff on my iPhone pro 12 max...I DONT THINK SO. You see how crazy this sounds, they need to fix it and stop putting all the customers through all the headaches of wiping and restore when they know at this point they have a problem that needs to be fixed...

I have an iPhone 11 Pro Max and when I setup my Homepod Minis the handoff feature worked fine. After a couple days the handoff had stopped working. I have had bluetooth issues with my iPhone since the iOS 14 update. The bluetooth will be fine for a couple days and then lock up until I turn it off and back on. Before resetting the Homepod Minis or my iPhone, I decided to try turning the bluetooth off and on again and it worked. The handoff immediately began working again for me and this has fixed it every time it has failed since.

I don't know if it will work for everyone, but it works for me so I wanted to share.

We should all be so lucky. I'm not! It is still not working. I switched the Bluetooth toggle on and off until I was blue in the face, and still no Handoff. No working Handoff on the Mini nor on the original Home Pod. Enjoy your newly-working functionality. Let us know whether it continues to work or if the fix is just temporary.

ah crap....I will for sure. It seems to be cooperating with playing on all speakers as well, again fingers crossed, it’s been a bit of a fight and frustrating for sure. I will offer one tip (forgive me if it’s been suggested) but I did try the reset for the Minis manually and then tried plugging it into my Mac, located it in finder and did the reset that way before attempting the Bluetooth idea. Maybe?

I had the same problem with my HomePod mini. Apple send a replacement which had more problems, hands off didn't work, it would not connect to my devices and wouldn't reset either. After three weeks of gathering data from both HomePod mini and my iPhone and sending it to engineers at Apple, I sent it back. we tried with iPhone 12 Pro and 11 and used different networks. I basically followed all the recommendation provided in this forum with no results. There are definitely issues that apple needs to resolve either with software or hardware. I will try to buy one in a few months and hopefully the issue has been rectified.

Certainly doesn’t fill one with hope that this problem will be magically rectified through turning Bluetooth on and off, but at least Rez_M gave a complete airing of the probable outcome for our efforts to fix what we’re told by Apple Support is our problem alone. The post also highlights the point that the fix can only be solved by Apple and not by the unwitting customer. Apple should acknowledge it and quit wasting everyone’s time.
