Homepod mini handoff not working

I purchased this specifically for the handoff feature as working from home I thought it would be pretty cool to be able to hold my phone near it while on call or playing a podcast and have it transfer over without going through the Bluetooth menu but after setting up the homepod mini, it just doesn't work at all. The "transfer to homepod" feature is enabled.

Also, when I tap the top, it just starts playing U2 music but not sure why it does that. What app would that be playing from/ Any way to disable that?

I was able to finally solve this with my HomePod mini and iPhone XS by doing the following: on my phone Settings> WiFi>the network that I am currently connected to and then unchecking Private Address. As soon as I unchecked that the song I was playing popped up that it could be played on the HomePod mini and it seems to have solved the problem. Using the Private address under Wifi prevents tracking but must make it hard for the HomePod to find my phone. Anyway not sure if this has been posted and hope it helps someone.

Am I correct in believing that the Handoff feature, which should have been available for quite some time now, is not the same as the updated Handoff feature provided by iOS 14.4 for iPhone 11 and the 12 series with the U1 chip? No handoff feature worked for the longest time on any phone (old or new) until I completely wiped my two phones (deleted all apps, everything) and then set them up manually and still have not put many of my apps back on either phone. Since iOS 14.4, the 12 Pro Max has the updated Handoff feature, the Xs does not. The Xs has the old Handoff feature, but not the new functionality. Two similar functions, but definitely not the same on the older phone. The 11 and 12 series iPhones have the U1 chip. Older phones do not. The new Handoff functionality (as far as I can tell) is not present on the old, larger HomePod - I believe it is only on the HomePod Mini. Am I accurate as far as my understanding of this situation?

In my case it seemed it was the router and network which fixed the handoff feature.

I was living in a small town with slow wireless then moved to the city with 400mps and the handoff feature started working.

the handoff feature started working when I was listening to some music and put it next to the speaker and got a quick message to handoff - I was very surprised and not expecting the feature and thought it might be fixed in the next upgrade.

It works perfectly now, every time.

the only conclusion I can come up with is the network and router. There were no other changes.

Lol....okay my wifi is on and it doesn’t work, I’ve spent over 5 hours with Apple and went through about every scenario possible with no luck. Theres obviously a wide spread problem that will need to be fixed with a software update and wifi is not the issue with 99.9 percent of the problems I’ve been reading about.

Im with you man, I agree. I just get frustrated on the fall back apple ALWAYS has, wipe your device and start as new. I refuse to do that because even if it does resolve my problem what am I supposed to do put one app on at a time to see what may affect it?...If would take me 6 months to get all my apps back on. Apple should develop some kind of diagnostic tool to determine what the problem is instead of making us wipe or device and start as new especially when everything worked perfectly on the previous phone. Why should I have to go through all that when I spend over $1500 for a new phone? From reading in the forums even when people wipe their device and start as new some work and some dont some work for a brief time and stop working. My daugthers brand new iphone 12 pro max never has worked and she only has a few apps on it and my iphone pro max with lots of apps on it works but often doesnt. Sometimes when the handoff doesnt work I manually connect music to it through airplay then it kickstarts the handoff and it starts working so there is obviously many bugs they need to work out but stop telling people to wipe their device and go through all the heahaches because they need to push out a software fix at this point...lets just hope it is a software issue and not hardware because if it is you know what that means.

Mine never worked from the start. Tried it with my 12 mini, X and 6s. None of them worked, called support they couldn’t figure it out and said to bring it into Apple. The Genius Bar couldn’t figure it out and even made me log in to a test device and that device didn’t work either. They replaced my HomePod mini with another one and we tested that one in store and it didn’t work either. They ended up saying nothing we can do on our end. Just hope that a software update fixes it.

Honestly pretty disappointed in the response from them.

I just set up a mini and got what I expected. Handoff on an iPhone 12 mini but not a 12 Pro Max.

My first thought was this could be caused by the privacy toggle that disables UWB. Nope, that’s fine.

My second thought was this could be that handoff is disabled. Nope, that’s fine.

So I removed the mini from Home and re-added after power cycling it. Confirmed it’s on software 14.3. Still no handoff with the one phone.

When I saw how long this thread is I reset the mini and put it back in the box.

I’m not going to be a beta tester nor am I going to waste time helping Apple diagnose it and wonder if it will maybe, someday be fixed. Even considering I paid $15, it’s not worth it when it doesn’t do what Apple said it would.

Yes. the behaviour for HomePod mini is very different from that with HomePod. For original HomePod this is unchanged, bring the iPhone close and content playing on the phone is transferred to the HomePod, or vice versa. There are a couple of taps of haptic feedback. With the mini there is a rapid tapping that increases in intensity as you get closer to the device. It also brings up a remote control display for the HomePod on the phone.
