MBA M1 - Silent Clicking not working

Just received my new MacBook Air M1 this afternoon and have been playing around and setting it up.

After starting to customize the settings to my liking, I noticed the same exact thing. The trackpad "clicks" as it is supposed to from the haptic engine. However when selecting "Silent Clicking" in the trackpad settings, nothing changes. The "clicking" is still there. I tried restarting the computer and clicking the option on and off, but nothing has worked as of yet.

I could not find anything regarding this problem on newer Macs until I found your post.

Any ideas on what it could be or does this mean a trip to the store? (I was hoping there would be an easy and obvious fix from a software update or something).

I just enabled it and can barely notice a difference. It seems like when silent clicking is enabled, its a little less of a thud but its so similar i really don't know if its actually changing anything when on or off haha. This is my first macbook so I'm not familiar how the others were with different trackpads.

I tried to change it and there is additionally the option "One-tip click" (I have a German version, so maybe it has a slightly different nametag).

After activating that, it does the "silent clicking" which I refer to as a "tip-click" instead of a push on the trackpad. Maybe what you want to achieve is something different, but I hope it helps...

I have the same issue with my new M1 MacBook Air. And the clicking seems louder than it should be anyway, which is why I really wanted to be able to turn it off.

Reminding everyone to report this bug to Apple - otherwise Apple won't realize anything is wrong for a long time, if ever.

Nothing changes after update to 11.3. Silent click still not silent

Similar --clicking is an annoyance for me. Bigger annoyance is the dragging sound when I move my finger across the track pad. AND the option to silently click is no longer available in the preference control panel.

I have the same issue, I recently received my M1 2020 MacBook Air and when switching between silent and not silent for the mouse click, it is 100% the same. I wonder if this is a bug or what.

I received today my M1 2020 MacBook Air and I have the same issue. I hope they could fix it in the next update.

How to report an issue to Apple?

I'm having the same issue. I assume it must be a software issue because the haptic engine is supposed to give them more flexibility. If anything, the haptic feedback should be doing LESS.

A bit annoying. Maybe the only thing I kind of dislike so far.
