Big Sur Menu Bar icons won't stay in position

After upgrade Big Sur installation, my menu bar icons won't stay fixed in place between logins or restarts.

I use Command key to drag the icons to the order I want, but if I log out or restart, they move back to different, random positions. I did not have this issue under Catalina - menu bar icons remained in location through logins and restarts.

Don, have you thought about a menu bar icon organizer. I use an app called Bartender I've been using it for a couple of versions. It allows me to hide menu bar icons that I don't need to see all the time and definitely reorder them to my preference. It is very helpful on a laptop. I'm now using an iMac so there isn't as much need to conserve space but I've never had an issue with menu bar icon order since using it.

If you don't go that route I'm wondering if load order of your startup items might be affecting the menu bar icon order. That could explain the some what randomness of the order every time you login back in or reboot.

I hope this helps.

Since this does not seem to be an issue that others are having, there is a probability that something specific to your setup like a third party extension or login item may be a part of the problem. That is why the advice to test in Safe Mode is a solid one. If the issue does not occur in Safe Mode then it is probably not a system bug but caused by third party software. If you want to troubleshoot further we can try to help. A second step is usually to run Etrecheck and post its full report here so others may look for possible causes.

It is possible that this an OS bug but I think that is unlikely; you should have heard about it by now if it were.

Hello Don Hayes,

We understand your Menu Bar icons are moving after you restart your Mac. You’re in the right place, we’d be glad to assist in seeking a solution.

You might try booting to safe mode to rule out any software conflicting with the installation process: How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

Additionally, test the issue with a different macOS user account: Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac - Apple Support

Let us know the results.

Take care.

You can file a bug report if this is an issue for you—
Apple Feedback http://www.apple.com/feedback

Did You try this?
You can deposit a feedback to nearly everything but NOT to MacOS itself....
And I would have A LOT OF feedback to Big Sur....

? I don't know— I just clicked on macOS

Same here, the documented feature, one of the NEW BIG DEALS in Big Sur, doesn't work. Mine do not stay in place. Not only that, I dragged onto the bar an icon for monitor brightness and it disappears on reboot. This just shows a lack of TESTING before pushing out new versions.

Expect these items to be fixed after 1. we are lectured on how to do these things (which we knowhow to do), and 2. that we were doing it incorrectly (which is crap), and magically maybe in the next version it will work - but alas, something else will be broken. Software design and testing in the world after the "internet update" is shoddy. Why test it in house when you can push electrons for free nightly and have your customers do your testing. Before the internet, floppies and CD's were too expensive to push out weekly and so testing was done properly and thoroughly.
