Apple Cinema Display 30’’ with M1 Apple Silicon Mac

Hello,

I am wondering if someone has already connected successfully the old but still wonderful Apple Cinema Display in its native resolution (2560x1600) to one of the new Apple Silicon M1 computer through USB-C link ?

I am interested in buying the brand new M1 ship Apple Mac Mini.

I remember that a solution had been found for the Mac Mini 2018 Intel based line through the USB-c link.

Thanks for your feedback !

Regards

I have 30” Cinema Display and a 2018 MacBook Pro connected to it via a Henge dock and I can use the full resolution. However when I unplug the pro and plug in my m1 MacBook Air I do not get the full resolution. I haven’t spent any more time of on it than that brief try so I’m unsure if the MacBook Air can drive this screen.

Update: I didn’t see the comment about the option key to see the full list of resolutions so I tried this an it works!

To be clear: I have this Stone - USB-C Multi-Port Desktop Hub for MacBook - Mini DisplayPort, Ethernet Port, Power Supply, 3 USB Ports, USB-C Port, SD Card, and Headphone/Speaker Connections https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076W7GVFY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_fabc_.sG-FbH6WMSNX?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

and it’s plugged into the original cable and power brick that came with the screen.

hope this help!

That should work. You have one connected already? Some have used HDMI on the mini to connect displays, but not sure if they were Apple Cinema Displays of 30". I think it is the combination of the port to dual dvi adapter and the native mini port connection. I love the displays even after much research on new ones so I am keeping these going till the cows come home lol.

I’ve got a pile of old Apple hardware in my office closet. Most of it still works but is too old to be of much use. Actually threw a lot of stuff away cleaning my garage. I had a bunch of old SCSI cables and drives along with a MacFx computer that probably was still bootable.

now software drives hardware do it doesn’t matter how long the hardware lasts as it’s software that ends its life.

Gadzooks. That is EXACTLY the hub I have. Do I have it set up wrongly? Or maybe my monitor adapter is not quite up to snuff.

My monitor adapter goes straight from the laptop to my monitor DVI cable. I have the monitor's USB-A plugged into the thunderbolt dock as well. the dock is attached directly to the laptop via the braided cable provided with the CalDigit dock.

What adapter are you using? And thanks for the response.

God it seems impossible to make a bootable copy of Big Sur for the M1 to boot from!!!!!! 2018 Catalina has NO problem with booting from anything (maybe even Mac OS 9.1) :):):)

All I want is a bootable 11.2.1 so I can test if the 30" goes black ot not

All Apple say is "read this, do this bla bla bla" I'm not STUPID, been using Mac for 30 years!

If an adapter works with 11.1 then Apple have done SOMETHING to make it not work in 11.2, 11.2.1..simple as that!

CCC does not work with Big Sur and M1, works fine with Big Sur and Intel but the M1 will not boot from it.

The dual link is used on the ACD 30" only because of amount of pixels in the day 15 years ago (and still today) of 4.1 million the largest of the day 2560 x 1600 dpi, with two you got 8.2 million pixels. So that is why I choose to hang on to my displays for now. One day two of the new 32" Apple display may replace them, but the cost is to high for what I do at the moment with a monitor.

I had a 30" cinema HD monitor, for 10 years to connect with my PC via GeForce video card to support 2560*1600.

I bought two M1 Mac, Air and Mini in past two months, and try to connect with that 30" family member.

I tried HDMI port with a HDMI to DVI-D adapter, and then a USB-C to DVI-D adapter.

Both of them in all two ways, detected the Cinema HD as maxima resolution as 1280*800.

I am a new Mac user and not sure if this is an on-board driver issue or cables wiring matter.

Need help to solve this to make Apple family member live together :)

Thanks,

Jin

Yes it’s all very intriguing. I didn’t mention it on my previous post but I’m sure the 30” monitor is being recognised to a small degree as it will come up in displays on the Mac mini but the screen is blank. However clicking on the Apple cinema HD icon on the Mac mini does nothing. I really like this display so I’m determined to get it working!!!!!

Hi Raven,

I am considering the following model https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/docks/owc-thunderbolt-3-dock in association with the Apple adaptation MiniDP -> DVI DUAL LINK.

Can you please tel me if your ACD 30" is awaking without any issue when you leave your computer going to sleep ?

Currently I have a dedicated single adaptor from UpTab that provides USB-C -> MiniDP. It is working correctly when starting the computer, but I have an issue when awaking it from sleep : The screen remains blank : I have to disconnect the MiniDP and reconnect it to recover the screen.

Thanks for your answer and have a nice day !
