HomePod Mini Internet Connectivity Issues

I am having issues with HomePod mini not connecting to the internet. My other HomePods have no issue when I ask a question etc. But when I ask one or both of the HomePod mini's it says " I am having trouble connecting to the internet.

I followed the trouble shooting steps apple provides but it goes back to "I am having trouble connecting to the internet." after a couple of hours. Then it is normal again.

If anyone has a solution or has also experienced this issue?

Having been struggling with the issue of HomePod minis repeatedly losing connection, and the two software updates not fixing it, I think I may have discovered the cause, at least in my situation.

The issues I’d been seeing were with my Minis in my living room, which are a stereo pair and are the farthest away from an access point (I have multiple APs throughout the house), is they would regularly lose the internet connection. This would cause issues ranging from the stereo pairing breaking, to Siri saying she was having trouble with the connection, and it would cause issues with my HomeKit setup and give me disconnected notifications for my HKSV cameras, when one of the Minis had been acting as the HomeHub.

I have a 2.4GHz / 5GHz network using the same SSID (WifI name) on both networks so devices can seamlessly pick the better band without having to provide multiple connection passwords.

What appeared to be happening is my Minis were flip flopping between the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, losing connection each time before eventually reconnecting. No other devices in my house appeared to be having this issue, as modern WiFi devices are designed to cope with this setup.

However, what appears to have been causing the disconnection issues was a feature called “band steering”, referred to as “Smart Connect” on my Netgear APs. This is a feature where the AP will try to push the device onto the “better” WiFi band to improve the connection. However, in the case of the Minis in my living room, they weren’t dealing with the band steering tidily (for whatever reason) and this was causing them to lose the connection.

Having disabled band steering (Smart Connect in my settings) things have settled right down. I’ll admit it has only been around 35 hours since I made this change, however we have not encountered connection issues with the Minis and I’ve stopped receiving HKSV camera disconnected notifications, where I had been receiving around 10 to 15 per day, previously.

Your mileage may vary, but if you’re having connection issues with your HomePods and your router has a band steering feature, I would try disabling this to see if it helps.

Have you tried this. I know this only works on devices using English.

go to the home app on device associated with homepods.

tap on the little house top left.

go to home settings.

tap on your picture, or if no picture, on your name.

turn off, then turn on “recognise my voice” follow very quick set up feature and this might fix it. It worked for me and I hope it will for you.

I'm back in love with the response time, sound quality, and ability to play my personal Playlists on my 2 minis! My lights and other Homekit Accessories respond quicker than my Google Mini's ever did. I also see that at least for lights/scenes, you seem to be able to chain commands (at least if they are similar. Need to test that more.

The 14.4 update seems to have fixed them. Not a single drop on a Netgear Nighthawk combo modem/router.

I don't want to put them on a T-Ball stand and swing for the fences anymore! Hope the fix worked for all.

Webguy 1979, I also am on AT&T Fiber and use the Arris BGW210-700 modem/gateway. I replaced my “Old (same model- had approx. 5yrs) with a new one (SAME MODEL).....no other choice with AT&T. This was a desperation move as I had tried (posted above), numerous other fix tries....& nothing worked & I was on my last straw. Don’t have the slightest idea why it worked but now everything works smooth with low latency 👍.  If you do go this route with AT&T: 1) Make sure to download AT&T’s “Smart Home Manager” App.. as it will walk you through the changeover & transfer your settings - you keep same previous router ID & password & saves you a lot of time reconfiguring.  2) However, before you go this length I suggest you look at Cardo’s recent hypothesis and ask your Att tech support rep to try a remote router reconfigure to modify (eliminate) the “smart connect” feature.....it’s worth a try. If it does work please post your good news. I am really curious as this “rings a bell” in my mind that connects a lot of dots from previous fix tries that worked but had short duration. I think Cardo is on to something & my fix may be related to mfg upgrading this feature?

morro11: Interesting. I have AT&T but I have it in Bridge Mode and I let my Airport Capsule handle routing. My connectivity issues on HomePod Mini were solved when I added an Airport Express under my desk where the HomePod Mini was located. Prior to doing that I had the WiFi connectivity issues. Before adding the Airport Express the HomePod Mini was 60-65 feet away from the Airport Capsule. So, does this mean the Airport Capsule also has some sort of "smart connect" feature also???

Keep in mind my iMac and printer are on my desk also and for years never had a WiFi connectivity problem.

I know it didn’t work for everyone but for me the new update fixed the issue for me. My HomePod mini was in the same room as my router and actually after it started working I moved it to my bedroom, which is further away to the router. It’s worked fine now for a few weeks. So I doubt the wifi signal is the issue, at least not in my case.

I did a little more investigation and I found a new wrinkle. Turns out the SSID I am connecting to is set to use both 2.4GHz and 5GHz, unlike the earlier SSID which is set at only 5GHz The bottom line is I cannot be sure if the increased signal or a frequency change was responsible for the unit working because the Powerline web interface does not show connected devices. (I could try switching off the Powerline 2.4 GHz band but I am loathe to mess with success at this point. :) I suppose it is also possible that the Mini just likes the Powerline adapter more than the ISP router per se but I would definitely recommend trying a WiFi frequency change as a possible solution.

If an Apple 'Technical Support' adviser cannot resolve the issue after 2-hours of phone support, I don't know what to say.

Well, I have been using computers for as long and probably longer than you and I would say about 95% of the time when I try to get help from Support, no matter what company, I end up solving the problem myself. Anyway, I think you are describing the problem incorrectly. How could you be streaming music to the Homepod if it wasn't connected to the internet? (Also no idea what you mean by "doesn't stay connected to my iCloud account .") The problem is that, as most people are reporting, the issue is rather that queries are answered with the reply "I am having trouble connecting to the Internet" even though it is clearly still connected and music can still be streamed. Yes, there seems to be an issue here but two of us have reported that we solved the issue by switching to another access point. You may or may not want to do that but it does point to possible solutions and solutions which I am pretty sure AppleSupport never suggested. That is the value of forums like this but it sounds like you have given up which is of course your decision. I probably would end up losing sleep over it but that's me :)

Apple is working on the issue. It is a Siri problem, which is specific for the home pod mini. Some routers don’t allow a renewed connection attempt by Siri and then we loose the internet connection. Apple is trying very hard to solve this security issue. That is what they told me here in Germany. The guy said maybe already at the end of the month they will publish the solution.

I have a Pace 5268 ATT designated router and ATT Fiber 1000 internet service. I have experienced all of the issues stated in this blog. Here are the two things I just tried and if anyone has tried these, please please do tell me your experience.

I have not cycled my router since connecting all of the Home Pods (2 Fat and 4 mini), so I unplugged the router for a couple of minutes and cycled it. All of the home pods seemed to connect.

My router was configured with the same name for the 2.4 and 5.0 radios so I renamed the 2.4 and gave it a different password. The router yelled at me for this but allowed it. ATT documentation says: Although the default approach should meet your needs, you have the ability to rename your network radios by accessing the gateway settings on your computer.

I am thinking one of the home pods might be on a different radio than the other running at different speeds. I don't know if that is possible but I am trying it.

If anyone has ATT Fiber let me know if a router upgrade is needed or a bridge router is needed. I doubt I need signal boosting.

Anyone else, let me know if having the same name on both wifi radios might be an issue.

To the guy that suggests turn on and off voice recognition, yes tried it many times.

A very big thank you to everyone on this blog. This is a wonderful group of people and very helpful.
