I am trying to open old iMovie files from many years ago. Does anyone know how to do this?

You will find iMovie 5 or 6 on your original start up discs for your old computer. If you no longer have them, you can buy the iLife 6 disc on ebay.

You can also search the internet for iMovie 6 or iLife 6 downloads.

However, if you control click on the project's icon, and then click on Show Package Contents, you might be able to use QuickTimePlayer 7 to open the .mov file that contains the entire project, though not in editable form. When you open the Package Contents you will see a window that looks something like this:

It might take awhile for QuickTimePlayer to make the conversion.

Hi, Welshman53,

I assume that you created the projects with iMovie 6 or earlier and now want to open them. Correct?

If so, you would need to have iMovie 6 or earlier on your Mac in order to open the old projects in editable form. Perhaps you have the old program available on a backup or disc somewhere. However, if you are running Catalina or Big Sur you won't be able to run the iMovie 6 and earlier versions.
