M1 Mac mini display issue

I received my M1 Mac mini on Tuesday and didn't experience any problem until today. Turned it on and noticed some small pink squares moving around my monitor. They would change position as I opened a folder or right clicked on something. After changing the stock wallpaper they disappeared. I also switch my HDMI cable just because, but I've been using this HDMI cable with other devices with no problem what so ever. Hoping it's not a hardware issue as this is a brand new unit. Has anyone dealt with similar problems?

Hey guys,

How many of you actually updated your mini to the latest OS 11.3?

It does resolve the pink squares issue, you know ;)

Not sure about the "snow" issue as I have never experienced it.

I have performed mega stress test on my mini with 30 shut downs and restarts over 10 hours and pink squares are gone for good :)

Normally I leave my Mini on all the time.

But installed Wacom drivers & I'm still having the pink squares. I've also developed the "static screen" on wake from sleep. Since I read that the "static screen" resolved on unplugging & reinserting in the HDMI cable, I tried it on the pink squares issue. This worked. I know it's not an actual solution, but it does provide some temporary relief until Apple resolves the issue.

Add me to the list of users that have the pink square issue as well as bluetooth drops with my brand new Magic Mouse and Keyboard. I noticed the pink squares the fist time I booted up the machine but they disappeared as I went through the setup process. I see them come and go randomly normally on boot up. I am using an ASUS MX279 1080P/60Hz via HDMI 1.4 cable. This is quite disappointing since my Mac mini 2012 worked flawlessly for 8 years before I upgraded to this unit. Considering returning the machine and building a PC maybe try again when the M2 variant is released. I will give it another week to see if they release a fix for both issues if not it's going back.

I got my Mini for couple of days now. And I had noticed the same issue from the thread yesterday. It looks like this is a common problem of the Mini. I reached out to the apple support online and did few troubleshooting. I tried the options given by testing the screen on recovery mode, logging in different accounts, and deleting login items. After restarting the mini the said issue was corrected. Until this morning when I powered on the mini again, wholla! The pink pixel flickering on the screen came back! Then I checked the storage management. I did the optimization of the storage. Restarted the mini and then again the symptom disappeared. Hopefully this will fix the issue. Ill be back! 🤞🏼

Well, I only had this issue (pink Squares) whenever I've installed new apps and restarted Mac Mini not shut down.

I Have decided to change default HDMI cable that came with my Dell S2721HS with shorter 8K HDMI cable and all issues with pink squares have gone... so far...

Will keep posted if any changes.

Btw; I'm sure that this is an issue caused by software rather than hardware though, not much point exchanging Macs at this stage as the post above suggest. Lets wait and see if Apple can address and fix this issue in the next Big Sur update... ;)

I hope it is software related probably wise to get Apple Care for those that decide to keep it. One thing I forgot to mention is I am using a single monitor so it's def not tied to dual displays. I don't think it matters but just throwing this out there just in case this is a hardware issue and maybe this narrows down things my Mac Mini was made in Malaysia.

I have a one month old M1 Mac mini and I am having serious issues with the display as well. It is flashing off for a few seconds and them coming back. The computer also has rebooted on its own a few times now. It is getting worse and worse as the days go by. I have changed out the HDMI and use this monitor as a second display for a five year old iMac and my new company owned Dell laptop with no issues. Therefore, the Mac mini is the equipment which is having the problem. I am not looking forward to fighting with Apple to get this corrected. I had an iPhone 4 which started to malfunction within an hour of having the phone out of the store and I had to argue to get Apple to replace the phone.

Worth adding that I swapped this panel once already due to dead pixels, but both screens worked otherwise flawlessly with this Mini, which is my second M1 Mini after swapping the first one quickly due to the pink squares (both Minis acted the same with the previous BenQ screen, though the second one didn't feel quite as bad but yeah - minor differences).

Running it USB-C to USB-C with a keyboard and mouse in the back of the display. Cable came with the screen.

So we know that the M1 Mac mini has a HDMI display problem when using 2 monitors. The issue manifests in different ways, including the port registering a device is attached but no video and random pink blinking pixels. We also know that Apple will replace the units but has no reserve so they just stick you at the end of a manufacturing que as if you are a first time buyer. Apple also is not acknowledging that this is a problem so we don’t really know if this is a hardware or software issue. Is this correct, or has Apple pointed to a known issue and solution? I’m just trying to determine if it would be better to just ask for a refund or wait for a replacement and hope it works as advertised.

Also have this issue with the base model M1 Mac Mini - have only ever used a single display at a time with it and have seen the small pink squares (horizontal line of them across the screen roughly in the middle) on 3 different monitors (two Dell U2412m and one Dell P2214h) and using either a HDMI to DVI cable or a USB-C to DisplayPort cable (the monitors have VGA, DVI, DisplayPort inputs). All of the monitors and the HDMI to DVI cable have been used with Windows computers for years with no issues whatsoever.

They look identical to the pink squares other people have posted and are on the desktop (I use automatic login) immediately after booting up from cold, the mouse cursor covers them rather than going behind them - they seem to go after a few minutes and/or if you fiddle with the wallpaper/colour profile etc in System Preferences. All options for Spaces (as suggested earlier in the thread) are unticked, though that is presumably only relevant to multiple displays anyway.

Seems like no other possible fixes yet? Anyone got a reference number or similar to mention if calling support so that they can link the calls together? (haven't tried calling yet)

I have been having problems with the display as well. It seems to be resolved now. I was chatting with an Apple rep and she had me do a reinstall of Big Sur. That did not solve the problem. We did talk about some other solutions and one of them worked. The solution? Well, don't use the HDMI port. Connect your screen to the USB-C ports. I had a USB-C hub with a HDMI port on it. After I connected the screen to the HDMI port on the USB-C hub I have had no issues with the display.

This Mac Mini is less than a month old and I have not damaged it any way. Therefore, it must be a manufacturing defect or a design flaw for the problem to arise so quickly for so many users. Getting Apple to admit to this problem may be the toughest part. As for a fix, that is anybody's guess. I don't think I am going to settle with a work around as the fix for this. The screen should be connected via the HDMI port. That is where it belongs.
