M1 Mac mini display issue

I received my M1 Mac mini on Tuesday and didn't experience any problem until today. Turned it on and noticed some small pink squares moving around my monitor. They would change position as I opened a folder or right clicked on something. After changing the stock wallpaper they disappeared. I also switch my HDMI cable just because, but I've been using this HDMI cable with other devices with no problem what so ever. Hoping it's not a hardware issue as this is a brand new unit. Has anyone dealt with similar problems?

After another week with this problem I have discovered that the issue completely resolves (for me at least) when I move the Mac Mini a meter away from all peripherals (monitor and bluetooth keyboard & mouse). Could this be a proximity interference issue? The pink artefacts at boot-up and during the login screen have completely vanished after this 'experiment'.

new M1 mini today.

within 2 hours, random pink pixels blinking on screen.

later, using 1 HD display and 1 HD capture card at the same time, the mini froze/crashed and auto restart.

capture card image displays before primary monitor.

Apple USB-C to HDMI adapter on capture card.

Display monitor blinks on and off several times during boot before log in.

Same issue here. Had the unit replaced same issue. Apple have taken various logs from my machine and have been aware of this now since at least the 23rd November. I am worried it’s a HW graphics issue so haven’t bothered fully setting up this machine yet which had the same issue literally in first boot fresh out of the box. Have asked Apple for an expected resolution timeframe but of course in true Apple fashion nothing. Seeing all of these comments says shouldn’t bother getting another replacement. Maybe need to just get my money back for now until it’s been fixed. I don’t want this to be an issue requiring repair, want a replacement unit if it’s HW. If Apple just admitted it was SW I’d keep it and go ahead and set it up.

Exactly the same issue here. Those pink squares sometimes appear during boot and the first few minutes (max) after logging in. After that they disappear and I haven't seen them coming back (so far), unless I reboot again.

The annoying thing is that we don't know if this is a hardware problem or one that could be fixed with an update.

Makes the decision to return the Mac mini more difficult.

Best of luck. I already had a replacement and it was identical. Displayed this issue literally on startup. Apple told me last night they are investigating and have been able to replicate the issue. However they are unable to say what the cause is or whether it’s hw or sw. I said if we knew either way it would make life so much easier. I haven’t bothered doing anything with my replacement other than go through the startup wizard and log in. This new M1 was to replace a 2011 Mac mini which ironically died because of a major graphics issue rendering it completely unusable. I now have to move everything to photos and music from iPhoto and iTunes. Over 150k photos. Will not go through the pain of this until I know where this is going. If Apple could say it’s sw I would start the process of fully setting it up. In my case the time machine backup I think I’ll only use as a last resort given how everything is mostly incompatible now.

Update from myself. Sorry it's a bit long but important.

I recieved and email from Apple on Saturday saying they had tried to contact me regarding this issue.

I have not posted it or reported it anywhere else so can only summise it's from this thread.

I called support back and was told the issue has been escalated above the normal support channels, they (Apple Support) have been told not to troubleshoot this issue and I've been passed up the chain to a more senior team looking into problems with new hardware. The person I spoke to on the phone was surprised the issue had already been ecsalated to this team (it was the "higher up" hardware team who had initally tried to contact me, not just the usual support team).

Anyway I'm expecting a call back this afternoon and it's being described as information collecting for the moment.

I'm updated onto the latest BETA of Big Sur 11.1 and the issue is still present.

Machine has also now developed another weird problem when waking from sleep in that both of my displays are totally black. The mouse pointer is visable and I can move it but there is nothing else on the displays, just total black. Putting it back to sleep then waking doesn't solve it, nor does unplugging monitor cables. Only a full reboot with the power button does.

I'm worried.

I too have been contacted by Apple, without me contacting them first, which was nice of Apple.

I spent an hour and half on the phone to some guy who took logs from my Mac Mini as well as tried seeing what different HDMI cables would/could cause etc etc. Also sent him a few videos of the problems occurring to help show the issues which he was very grateful for.

I too seem to only have problems before logging in, but have the odd issue on the desktop from time to time, but they tend to go away from different certain things.

Hopefully as Apple are taking this situation very seriously I am confident they will find a solution soon.

It's hard to tell, honestly. I think that's what Apple is going to have trouble with. It could be drivers but it doesn't seem to impact the MacBook Air or MacBook Pro even on external displays. Because of this my suspicion is a hardware fault. What I don't know is if it's a defect in manufacturing or if it's a defect in design.

Another symptom seems to be apps locking up while the rest of the system remains relatively stable minus the artifacts. That's also an indication of a memory/hardware issue.

It's likely going to take a few engineers time to figure all this out and issue a fix. If it's hardware they'll probably just wait until people complain about it and those people are going to have to hope their warranty is still good. I'm taking mine to an Apple store tomorrow. I'm not sure if I'll return it or exchange it. It's 6 hours of driving every time I need to have them look at it so it's probably just good to cut my losses at this point.

I'm going to make a wild guess on what could be causing it. The one thing that is different from Mac Minis that the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro don't have is the power supply. If for some reason the power supply is off, bad capacitors, etc. we could see all kinds of weird things happen. It's just a guess but based on what I'm reading and seeing it seems the most likely culprit to me.
