M1 Mac mini display issue

I received my M1 Mac mini on Tuesday and didn't experience any problem until today. Turned it on and noticed some small pink squares moving around my monitor. They would change position as I opened a folder or right clicked on something. After changing the stock wallpaper they disappeared. I also switch my HDMI cable just because, but I've been using this HDMI cable with other devices with no problem what so ever. Hoping it's not a hardware issue as this is a brand new unit. Has anyone dealt with similar problems?

Hey guys,

How many of you actually updated your mini to the latest OS 11.3?

It does resolve the pink squares issue, you know ;)

Not sure about the "snow" issue as I have never experienced it.

I have performed mega stress test on my mini with 30 shut downs and restarts over 10 hours and pink squares are gone for good :)

Apple is admitting it and working the problem. Lots of us have had calls with them that Apple initiated; I've had two.

There's no legitimate way to even suggest apple isn't admitting there's an issue and they're not paying attention.

It's slow going and it's an investigative process.

I say again for the billionth time; if you're not happy, you're not willing to accept what is clearly just more typical early-adopter issues of tweaking and tuning - and yes, maybe some design issues - RETURN THE MACHINE AND KEEP THE RETURN NUMBERS UP SO IT IS CONTINUALLY ESCALATED.

That's the biggest, most visible thing you can do as a consumer who is not finding happiness with the product.

Period.

What I find interesting is that not even one reviewer on YouTube or other tech sites have talked about this issue. Surely we can’t be the only ones experiencing it. I’ve returned mine long ago. I’ve also been contacted twice by Apple but the simple fact that none of the big names out there are mentioning the problem is strange to me.

A reminder of UK consumer law (for those in the UK): Under the Consumer Rights Act, your consumer rights may allow you to get faulty goods repaired or replaced for free up to six years after purchase, although the longer you have had the goods the progressively more difficult it will be to show the defect arose as a result of the state of the goods at time of purchase.

If this is a hardware defect then I feel more than comfortable through my interactions with the support team that I will be able to get a replacement unit and I don't expect Apple to push back against this. As it stands I'm mostly getting pink squares during login, and this isn't a problem that is causing any issues.

I once got a really odd resolution on the HDMI monitor and the whole machine wouldn't shut down, but happily this occurred when I was retrieving logs for the machine for Apple support so I sent the video and logs to them.

Hi Everyone,

@elliottja: I live in Hungary, and of course we have different laws here. I called Apple Support in 3 days when I purchased my Mac Mini and faced the magenta boxes issue (and auto-restarting just after logging in). They strongly encouraged me to ask a replacement (or money back) from the reseller, here. The only problem was that I bought my Mini as a company, not as an invidual, and according to the law you cannot ask money back if you are a company. I took it to the service and they ran a lot of diagnostics and stuffs like that, and they couldn't find anything wrong.

I tried 3 different monitors with 3 different HDMI cables (with all the possible combinations) and I saw the magenta boxes (more like lines for me) every time, and was very hard to log in using one monitor of the three.

I hope there will be some solution in the near future as the hardware performance is stunning. In the meantime I work on my super stable 2012-mid Macbook Air on a big screen. :)

All the best for you, Guyz!

As I have mentioned before, there in no point of exchanging Mac mini, either you wait it out for Apple fix it, or if you can't wait, return your mini for refund.

This looks more and more like software issue.

BTW; After changing my HDMI cables, my mini is still behaving :)

No pink squares so far - restart, shutdown, waking up, etc;

All good here... :)

I had the same issue on my 2018 mini and when I got a m1 mini it started happening here too. Suspect it's an OS issue. Seems to happen more often on the m1 though. Pink squares only last for maybe 2-3 minutes each time then go away. Anytime I have the issue it goes away on its own, doesn't appear to need any action except patience to wait the short time before it stops on its own. Hoping they figure out and fix it, just glad it doesn't last long for me.

Just spoke to Apple via online live chat - asked to be put through to a Senior Adviser which they did and I made it clear that I didn't want a return (as need a computer) or exchange (as hasn't helped anyone else) and asked when there would be a software/firmware fix. They said Engineering are looking into it, so here's hoping that they are aware of and actively working on this issue, and not just trying to close it down

I spoke to them as well. I’m sure they are tracking this very actively. I am also pretty sure this is a software issue. Just saw a thread (can’t find it now) from Elarson6772 where he was in the beta program (and it was not working), dropped out and went to 11.1 (not beta) and all was well. He inadvertently upgraded to beta 11.2 and it broke again. I was going to ask if he could downgrade again to 11.1 but lost the thread. Anyway, between talking to senior tech support and his thread, I think I’ll sit tight and wait for my replacement. My guess is that they’ll have a fix soon. If not, I can afford the wait.

The forum deleted my post because it mentioned 11.2 which isn’t public.

I'm trying to revert back to 11.1 now but am running into issues. Seems the resort process on the M1 mini is different and instead of restoring from time machine it only allows me to use migration assistant to do so which doesn’t revert the OS back to 11.1. I might be screwed again or at least have some work ahead of me. Lesson learned on using unreleased versions.

Can you tell us which displays you have and how you have them connected? You were on the beta program, but there are a lot of folks with issues who probably were using the public released OS and not the beta.

it sounds like there’s a golden display setup that works, and it would be really helpful to know what that is.

thanks,

Rob

My pink pixels still keep on appearing but I recognized that they mostly appear after logging in, and meanwhile there is something that happens quite seldom : it does go blank screen randomly sometimes..

Also apple support via twitter keeps on sending me troubleshooting links that don't help, the latest advice is to try with a different display which I don't have except a LED TV...

Jan 12, 2021 5:46 AM in response to Zer0reZ

Ive contacted Apple. The response I got was this.

“At this time, this is not an issue Apple has escalated as trending. A service provider would have to inspected it to determine if it is hardware or software. “

they told me to try reinstall the OS. Which I have tried. The person I spoke with said they have no way to reference this. Discussion. I asked to escalate the issue and was told I’d get a call later today. I’ll follow up with what is said. Bummer they seem to not be real concerned about a very clear reported issue.

I wonder why there is no reports from users on YouTube about the display pink pixel box issue?
