M1 Mac mini display issue

I received my M1 Mac mini on Tuesday and didn't experience any problem until today. Turned it on and noticed some small pink squares moving around my monitor. They would change position as I opened a folder or right clicked on something. After changing the stock wallpaper they disappeared. I also switch my HDMI cable just because, but I've been using this HDMI cable with other devices with no problem what so ever. Hoping it's not a hardware issue as this is a brand new unit. Has anyone dealt with similar problems?

Hey guys,

How many of you actually updated your mini to the latest OS 11.3?

It does resolve the pink squares issue, you know ;)

Not sure about the "snow" issue as I have never experienced it.

I have performed mega stress test on my mini with 30 shut downs and restarts over 10 hours and pink squares are gone for good :)

Well that is a strange response. In 2008 I have got a replacement of my mbpro easily by Apple in Vienna, Austria. So either Apple have changed their approach of customer support or the support center in your city is a bit unfriendly. Even here in Turkey the apple support told me that if I can't resolve the problem they would want me to send it to a technical services so that they will test the computer and could possible make the replacement. Do you live in developing country ?

If I had time I'd make a review video of my m1 Mac mini mentioning this defect. But first I'm going to write a blog post about this issue in Turkish.

I also have this issue on my M1 Mini, noticed it after first login after unboxing. Im pretty sure this is a software bug, because it happens only after a new boot and it goes away very quickly. Does happen on hdmi, on usb-c to hdmi cable, usb-c to usb-hdmi hub, with different type and length of cables and many of us have the same problem, so i dont think so all computers are having this problem... You can think Im crazy but look at the your screenshot, what do these flashing things look like? Its like a big cursor in terminal :)

Same. My problems are three-fold:

(1) Monitors are not waking up reliably. One or both are glitching on wake-up. Not getting login prompt and having to ctrl+comm+eject to restart

(2) Single and Dual monitors are not registering properly, even with the recommended (archaic) DVI & VGA setup I found online.

(3) not able to connect HDMI to HDMI.

(4) The intermittent pink-block problem that goes away after restarting.

(5) Losing my menu bar (left side) - disappearing and locking up.

Not sure how to remedy, but ctrl+comm+eject seems to be working ok.

So, here's a video of what mine does:

It may not be overly obvious in that video but I don't boot to a login screen, I auto-login. When cold, and only cold, sometimes the pink video artefacts will be present on the desktop (only) and they come and go if you select one of the menu items or not. Thats what I try to show in the video but not desperately well. I got this machine a week after release because it was a 16GB model so I couldn't get it on release day. It's done it pretty much since day one but when the machine has warmed up it goes away so I've not really bothered too much about it.

The way things work in the UK is that once you have reported the fault inside the warranty period then if the machine fails due to that fault it's covered by warranty regardless of when it is, so I'm still debating, but I may report this issue just for the sake of getting it logged.

I'm using a Dell S2719DGF, 1440p @ 144Hz with an Xbox HDMI cable - I had issues with the screen going off which I pretty much knew would be the cable and the Xbox cable seemed to be the best one that I have. I do have a USB-C to HDMI but I can't really spare the USB-C ports for it, so I'm using HDMI (why take up a precious USB-C port when I only have 1 monitor and it's HDMI?)

Personally, given it goes away when the machine has warmed up and been running a while I fail to see how this can be anything other than hardware. But that's just my amateur diagnosis. I mean, if we were talking back in the days of through hole soldering then I'd be taking it apart and looking for a dry joint, but those days are long behind us.

Well, gee - thanks "Moderator":

We’ve edited your post M1 Mac mini display issue because it contained link(s) that weren't directly related to the original poster's question.

I guess if I try again TO POST A LINK TO A VIDEO OF THIS SAME FAULT AS THE OP HAPPENING it will get edited out again??

If so, does anyone know how I'm meant to share a video showing the fault??

Hi All ,

Similar concerns here although in my case with my brand new Mac Mini M1 delivered January 2021 , I can't even see any screen period, not even an Apple logo, tried different DVI, HDMI & USB-C HDMI Adapters although nothing, Blank screen straight out of the box. As everyone on this thread has noted there appears to be an Issue with the Big Sur OS, although I'm hoping this is Not in fact a Hardware Graphics card issue that's causing the problem, which from the majority of discussions on the thread appears not to be the case. I'am hoping that Apple will expedite the work around to fix this issue ASAP, as many of us rely on our Macs to work on a daily basis; also as a self employed small business owner I need need to have a computer & operating system that is reliable these bugs should of been tested & fixed Prior to Roll out??, although this sounds obvious there needs to be some consistency here to resolve what ever issue is causing these display issues on a Brand new Mac Product, waiting upon a Prompt Solution to this graphics problem, thanks !
