M1 Mac mini display issue

I received my M1 Mac mini on Tuesday and didn't experience any problem until today. Turned it on and noticed some small pink squares moving around my monitor. They would change position as I opened a folder or right clicked on something. After changing the stock wallpaper they disappeared. I also switch my HDMI cable just because, but I've been using this HDMI cable with other devices with no problem what so ever. Hoping it's not a hardware issue as this is a brand new unit. Has anyone dealt with similar problems?

Hey guys,

How many of you actually updated your mini to the latest OS 11.3?

It does resolve the pink squares issue, you know ;)

Not sure about the "snow" issue as I have never experienced it.

I have performed mega stress test on my mini with 30 shut downs and restarts over 10 hours and pink squares are gone for good :)

I'm honestly surprised it worked for you. Seemed to be a very common issue that if you format the drive and try to re-install, it fails. Apple has a whole document on how to circumvent that. In any case, would you mind checking what your build number is? I think that's what it's called. Click Apple logo in top left, "About This Mac", then click on the version number and it'll change to a build number. What is that on yours? Mine is currently 20B50.

That sucks, I was hopeful that you had found a good solution. I have not tried a fresh install and now it seems like I shouldn't. I still have not noticed an issue today. Like some others, mine is random. I will sleep on it and make my mind up tomorrow about sending it back. Not sure I want to even try another M1 product right now. Thought about getting the MacBook Air.

I’m also tried reinstall Big Sur and you know what, after I used function erase my Mac and boot automatically to the recovery screen I seen this pink artifacts immediately what can tell me what this is not a Big Sur problem it’s looks like a HW issue the best way to explain it what it’s not SW it’s try to turn it off manually using a power button I can’t believe what this pink screen before shut down is normal. And first what I wanna do when I come to the Genius Bar ask them let me see another Mac mini and try to shut it down right away and if I’ll see ping screen on that machine also I’ll will keep listening all explains from the apple worker and keep write the true here until they will solve this issue.

That’s my hope too. I never notice possible HW issues when using the computer. The performance is nice. On my mini the pink squares only return for a moment when I boot/reboot.

Not knowing if it’s a HW issue (that might get worse in the future) is the most annoying part of it all. The return window is slowly closing.

On the 2018 Mini the HDMI is busted after upgrading to Big Sur. Downgrading the OS fixes it again.

The HDMI chip in the M1 mini is the same one. So those problems could certainly be related.

That's weird. I'm not entirely sure that's related, but that could benefit from more exploration when there's time. I wonder if it's a cheap cable and/or and Big Sur's security tightening has something to do with it...? That's pretty weird.

Changing the background doesn't do anything for me. Nothing what's been suggested in this thread does so far.

Because the pink squares only show up randomly during boot (sometimes they don't show up for days) people might think they found a "fix" (for now), but in reality the pink squares will return. You'll see, sadly.

I guess we'll really have to wait on Apple's explanation on this.

Well I’m with ya. My update finished and almost immediately noticed a couple pink squares. Brief, but still showed up.

Im gonna return it and probably wait a couple months to reorder. Will be checking this and another thread I’m following. Good luck you guys in whatever you end up doing and report back if you find any clues. Lol

If you're worried about it, return it with all haste, and keep the return numbers up so Apple will take notice.

For myself, I don't feel it's an issue that's going to leave my system broken and unusable. In fact, it's gone away completely - warm boot, cold boot, hdmi, thunderbolt, etc.

I'm on a Mini. It might be more prevalent on one fo the mobiles. Not sure.
