M1 Mac mini display issue

I received my M1 Mac mini on Tuesday and didn't experience any problem until today. Turned it on and noticed some small pink squares moving around my monitor. They would change position as I opened a folder or right clicked on something. After changing the stock wallpaper they disappeared. I also switch my HDMI cable just because, but I've been using this HDMI cable with other devices with no problem what so ever. Hoping it's not a hardware issue as this is a brand new unit. Has anyone dealt with similar problems?

Hey guys,

How many of you actually updated your mini to the latest OS 11.3?

It does resolve the pink squares issue, you know ;)

Not sure about the "snow" issue as I have never experienced it.

I have performed mega stress test on my mini with 30 shut downs and restarts over 10 hours and pink squares are gone for good :)

There are some compatibility issues between Mac mini and ext monitors.

I had this issue twice - reinstalling OS and update to 11.1.

Both issues disappeared after second boot and never came back since...

Definitely software issued swapping Macs will not resolve it.

Just be patient for OS Fix, it will come eventually as Apple is well aware of this issue...

Price we pay for being "first adopters" I guess ;)

The problem is that the corruption is internal. I could move the mouse cursor over my pink display artifacts. If it were a display compatibility issue that wouldn’t be possible. If it’s an HDCP failure then the whole screen would blank out.

Whatever it is is internal. It very well could be software but based on the differences in the way it is presenting itself to everyone here my guess is hardware. It’s possible that a software fix could work around or resolve the hardware issue too.

I used to work for many big names supporting computer monitors, televisions, PCs, etc. Samsung, Sony, and Toshiba were just some of the brands I supported.

After another week with this problem I have discovered that the issue completely resolves (for me at least) when I move the Mac Mini a meter away from all peripherals (monitor and bluetooth keyboard & mouse). Could this be a proximity interference issue? The pink artefacts at boot-up and during the login screen have completely vanished after this 'experiment'.

Yeah I will give it a try in a day or so, still not 100% convinced I wont see the problem occur here but so far so good.

Worth nothing that on my previous monitor (BenQ XL2430 24-inch 144 Hz) I could produce the issue with the keyboard & mouse plugged directly into the Mini, or with them plugged into the monitors USB pass-through. Plugging them into the monitor however caused an extra issue in that I'd have to replug the keyboard on each reboot to make it work.

Hi, I just had an interesting talk to one super friendly apple support guy via telephone.

I was calling because I had Bluetooth issues (especially when using wifi) he told me to reset my SMC (power off your Mac mini unplug it - wait for 15 seconds - replug it and wait another 5 seconds then turn it on - this will reset the SMC ) this in fact solved my issues with bluetooth! I also mentioned issues with my Mac mini showing weird artefacts after it went to sleep - his guess was that this could also be an SMC issue... Currently testing and sending my Mac mini to sleep and wake it up again a couple of times - if I don't reply to this, the problem is solved for me and you may want to try it as well.

all the best

I'm still getting pink squares during login from cold boot on the primary monitor, but I haven't seen them persist to the desktop for ages now.

I have 2 monitors connected. 1 USB C, 1 HDMI. My wife's profile has HDMI as main monitor, mine has the USB C.

After the last update there are fewer pink squares, but that's because there's a much quicker transition from the password screen to login screen. There used to be a black screen, then login screen came back briefly with bar showing profile loading, before transition to black and into desktop. The pink squares would mostly appear during the brief glimpse of the login screen again. The latest update seems to have removed that middle screen and it's a fairly fast fade to desktop now, so there's less opportunity for the pink squares to appear.

Interesting observations about proximity to the monitor.
