Printers compatible with Big Sur

Does anyone know where I can find a list of printers compatible with Big Sur? Have just updated OS and old printer no longer supported. When I shop for a new printer, none list Big Sur as compatible OS.

I recommend a couple of steps to help isolate the problem.

  1. Check the Canon web site to confirm that you do have the most current driver. If not, then download it and try printing.
  2. Directly connect the printer with a USB cable to see if it works. If it does, then the problem is within the Verizon network.
  3. Contact Verizon to see if they can help you resolve the issue.
  4. If this is a new printer, it most likely works in the Air Print mode. Check your printer's manual for how to set that up. With Air Print, no printer driver is needed, so any printer drivers should be removed.

I hope one of these steps works for you

Can’t “assume” I went to HP website, found my printer and driver for Big Sur. When I clicked on the link for the driver it will download it but when I try to install it I receive an error message stating “Apple cannot be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software. This software needs to be updated. Contact developer for more information.” Good luck with contacting HP Support. I was not able to contact them.

Thanks for your response. You are correct about print manufacturers. I have an old HP Laserjet Pro MFP M29w. It never did scan. After I updated to Big Sur it stopped printing. Because it is out of warranty HP refuses to supply software updates. As a result, a perfectly good laser printer with new toner is useless.

So I bought a new HP Officejet 9015e. It printed and copied fine but would not scan. After 2 hours with HP support (since it has a new warranty they allow phone calls), they couldn't find a solution. After another hour with Apple we concluded that the only way to scan with this new HP was to use HP Smart. It is terrible software. After a second call to HP they finally admitted that Mac Image Capture would not work because HP wants customers to use their proprietary software. There is no work-around. When I suggested to HP that my only option was to return the printer the guy hung up on me. I called back and got a more cooperative customer support person. But after we tried a couple of failed workarounds she agreed that if I kept the printer I would be reduced to HP Smart. So I'm sending it back.

Now I am in the market for a laser printer/scanner that is compatible with Big Sur Image Capture. I will avoid VueScan because I insist on using Image Capture, a very fine and useful scan software. Thanks for your time.

Due to bad advice from an HP community advisor I was given a link to a laserjet M29w firmware update. Unfortunately it was for a LaserJet 3020. Now the printer is locked up and won't even copy. The LED flashes HP and the power light blinks. Without the proper firmware the printer is useless.

I made two requests for replacement firmware from the HP community advisor but have gotten no response. I placed another post in a different thread but haven't gotten any response.

I'm considering a Brother MFC-L2750dw because it is listed as a printer compatible with AirPrint, but I have no way of knowing if it compatible with Image Capture software.

Hi,

In order to update the firmware, the HP LaserJet Pro MFP M29w printer must of course be accessible in some way, which it does not appear to be now. I assume that the error state in question is not mentioned in the manual (http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c05847830.pdf), and that it is not even possible to print a configuration page. Sorry to hear about this.
