Printers compatible with Big Sur

Does anyone know where I can find a list of printers compatible with Big Sur? Have just updated OS and old printer no longer supported. When I shop for a new printer, none list Big Sur as compatible OS.

iMac 21.5″, macOS 10.15

Unfortunately it's not up to Apple to support a printer, it's up to the printer maker to make sure their printers support a particular OS release. AirPrint by far is the easiest way to setup a printer on a Mac. I used to use a driver for my HP LaserJet Pro but finding out it was AirPrint capable I switched in to that in Catalina. If you go to Apple's download page you can also find a separate printer driver download that might have a driver for HP printers that works as well. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT201465 this link gives you more info on printers as well.

or just switch to a HP printer. I don’t want to spend the money on a new printer, but HP printers seem to cause the least headaches, especially when printing from iPhone or iPad.

Not sure why you'd want to switch from a manufacturer with crappy support of macOS to another with crappy support.

But, really, the manufacturer probably doesn't matter much. Whatever you do, buy a printer that uses AirPrint. You'll never have any problems. I've been printing to my Epson NX530 over AirPrint through 10 OS upgrades and it has never been a problem. Same for its scanner functionality through the Image Capture Architecture.

Hi Jan, I did manage to find a solution. I connected my Canon printer to a USB A port on a PC and updated the firmware. I was running v1.03 and upgraded it to v2.02 (I think). This took a few minutes but solved the issue. The Canon printer broadcast itself via bonjour and Big Sur and my iPad and iPhone could also see it. So I am back in action. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

I'm sorry you are having to deal with this frustration. If I may, I offer the following thoughts. Most printers, in fact, will work with Big Sur and Catalina. Also, most newer printers are Air Print capable and easily work that way. With Air Print, you no longer need any printer drivers. There are a few printers that do not yet specifically say that they are Big Sur compatible, but they say they will work with Catalina, and in fact will also work with Big Sur. So, it is possible that Apple does coexist very well, in spite of what some complainers say. For the vast majority of them, they simply have not updated their printer driver, yet they complain that it's always Apple's fault, when their problem is easily solved.

Hello,

I just called Brother Printers in France, because I could not print or scan with any of my printers (Brother, HP, Dell) from a Mac running macos 11.1. They confirmed that basically no printer manufacturer has been able yet to release a driver compatible with macos 11.x because of lack of time. They proposed some options:

  • either wait for your printer manufacturer to release a compatible driver, which should not take long,
  • buy a new printer with AirPrint capability: in this case, you are not supposed to need a driver, as AirPrint is native in macos 11.x,
  • roll back to macos 10.x,
  • print through another computer that has a driver.

Hope this clarifies the situation. Best regards,

Hi,

Yes, the Canon download sites appear to have drivers for up to macOS 10.13 High Sierra only.

You could try to reset the printing system and re-add the printer to begin with. Check whether the operating system automatically suggests a suitable driver. If not, you may want to test whether the latest macOS (High Sierra) driver from a Canon site possibly would work with Big Sur anyway. If nothing else works, you could perhaps try a driver for another (more modern) PIXMA model. There is also an experimental Gutenprint driver for the printer in question, but with unclear operating system support.

As always, before carrying out any experiments with printer drivers, make absolutely sure that multiple backup copies of important files are available. One can never rule out software conflicts. Data may be lost. You may have to erase and reinstall everything on the computer. A hardware problem is unlikely, but it is impossible to guarantee anything.

Hi summer3030,

AirPrint is not necessarily the same as a Wi-Fi printer. AirPrint is a driverless technology for network printers (both wired and wireless). There are also a few USB devices with limited driverless capabilities in About AirPrint - Apple Support (in fine).

There are many Wi-Fi printers (especially older models) that do not support AirPrint, and thus require drivers.

Software/drivers offered by printer manufacturers for AirPrint models may or may not add functionality.

If you need information about how to connect and use your existing printer, it would probably be better to start a separate discussion. Do not forget to mention the exact printer model.
