Printers compatible with Big Sur

Does anyone know where I can find a list of printers compatible with Big Sur? Have just updated OS and old printer no longer supported. When I shop for a new printer, none list Big Sur as compatible OS.

iMac 21.5″, macOS 10.15

Hello Flag UK,

May I ask a couple of additional questions? What exactly happens when/if you try an existing HL-2135W macOS Catalina driver under Big Sur? Any error messages, or does it just not work? After resetting the printing system and re-adding the printer, is it possible to, somehow, choose (use) a fresh 10.15 driver (downloaded from Brother)? Is it possible to install a downloaded 10.15 driver at all?

The supported printers are shown here: http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/p_Supported_Printers.php .

Please note the information on the home page about macOS Catalina installation problems.

However, there have been some reports about drivers (for other printer models) used with Big Sur, so this may or may not work with your printer.

As you have discovered, HP does not mention a Big Sur driver for the HP LaserJet Pro P1109w on the support page (https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-laserjet-pro-p1109-printer-series/8501654/model/8501690).

Interesting is the conflicting information about AirPrint:

The article About AirPrint - Apple Support (Published Date: January 05, 2021) does not list the P1109w, nor a P1102w. An old iOS: AirPrint 101 article (HT4356, Last Modified: February 13, 2012) had an HP LaserJet P1102w Printer in the list, but not a P1109w. In the HP article https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-laserjet-pro-p1109-printer-series/8501654/model/8501690/document/c03722645, AirPrint is mentioned for both models (under HP LaserJet printers).

I do not know the reason for this. One should perhaps not rule out that the printers have an early AirPrint version. Anyway, you could perhaps check whether it is at all possible to add and use the P1109w at least as a basic AirPrint printer.

As far as I know, Apple is not able to provide a list like this. To do so, they would have to test all of the printers to confirm their compatibility. And then as a new OS is released or updated, the process would have to be repeated. Finally, they would also have track any changes in every printer. So, as a practical matter, it has to be up to the user to investigate whether their printer will work with a new OS release before installing the OS. The problem is made worse by the fact that many of the printer manufacturer's are very slow to update their product's software. Thus, we come to know who's printers not to buy again.

Hi,

To begin with, it may be a good idea to reset the printing system. Does the operating system offer any suitable drivers to use?

If not, you may want to check whether the Dec 11, 2020 HP Printer Drivers v5.1 for macOS (https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1888?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US) package from Apple can be used instead. Look for something like the HP Photosmart C7200 series (5.0.5) and HP LaserJet Professional P1100w (6.9) drivers mentioned in the referenced Printer and scanner drivers for Mac - Apple Support article.

Software conflicts cannot be ruled out when testing printer drivers, so make sure that you have backup copies of all important files before you start.

Hi - So i did get my Canon Pixma MG3620 to be compatible with Big Sur via AirPrint as suggested above. Thank you others for that. I had to go to the Canon website and download about 6 different updates. They were hard to find. But the printer/ scanner is working great. So on Canon - yes they have updated drivers and other computer-y type stuff to make this printer work with Big Sur . It's beyond me. I'm barely hanging on here.

Thanks everyone for all your help.

Hello again,

Yes, it is understandable that many users are very disappointed. Problems have been reported with printers from several manufacturers. It should be in the interest of all, including the computer company, to find a solution.

One of the few things that you could test would be to check whether it (somehow) would be possible to use the macOS Catalina 10.15 driver. Have you tried resetting the printing system and re-adding the printer?

This appears to be a GDI printer, probably reducing the possibilities of using a generic PostScript or PCL driver.

Anyway, good luck!

Hi Nick,

The PIXMA MG6150 does not appear to be a printer supporting the driverless AirPrint technology.

You could of course try to (reset the printing system, re-add the printer, and) use the latest available Canon driver for macOS Sierra 10.12, but (unless this is a 64-bit driver) it will probably not work.

If nothing else works, you may have to look for alternative solutions. However, be careful, and download files from trustworthy sources only.

Apparently, there is an experimental Gutenprint driver for your printer model. However, this would really be experimental, and you must know exactly what you are doing.

If absolutely necessary, you may even want to try running Windows in a virtual machine on your Mac, and test whether printing would be possible from there.
