Printers compatible with Big Sur

Does anyone know where I can find a list of printers compatible with Big Sur? Have just updated OS and old printer no longer supported. When I shop for a new printer, none list Big Sur as compatible OS.

Hi,

The Samsung Xpress SL-M2020 Laser Printer series does not appear to have drivers for anything higher than macOS Catalina 10.15 (https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/Samsung-Xpress-SL-M2020-Laser-Printer-series/16462592).

See also the following article, where the SL-M2020W is mentioned (https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c06520117).

A pure experiment would be to reset the printing system (Reset the Mac printing system to solve a problem - Apple Support), and then carry out a test with a fresh Samsung universal printer driver V3.92.00 for macOS Catalina 10.15 (https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/printers/SS/Print_Common_SW/Samsung_Mac_10.15_Driver_V3.92.00.dmg). However, do not expect it to work with Big Sur. If you try it anyway, you must know exactly what you are doing. Otherwise, you would probably have to wait until HP will make drivers for Big Sur available (if at all for this model).

Hi,

Yes, as you have discovered, the HP support page for the 1518ni does not appear to have anything for operating systems newer than macOS 10.12 Sierra (https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-color-laserjet-cp1510-printer-series/3422465/model/3422471).

As a test, you may want to check whether the (Dec 11, 2020 post date) HP Printer Drivers v5.1 for macOS package from Apple (https://support.apple.com/kb/dl1888?locale=en_US) has anything of interest. Look for a driver for something like HP Color LaserJet CP1510 Series (19.13). However, do not expect this to work with macOS Big Sur. Look upon this as an experiment only. Before you begin, it may be a good idea to reset the printing system (https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/mac-help/mh14001/11.0/mac/11.0).

EDIT: Just noticed that you had solved the problem while I was editing this message. Glad to hear that.

I'm thinking that what the problem is that the printer manufacturers have not sent out updated printer driver software. I've had the exact same problem with Big Sur and think that's it. They may update that software soon but the question is what to do in the mean time? Right now I'm emailing the docs I need printed to myself and then opening them on an older Mac that still connects to the printers. Look at your printer manufacturer site and see if there are any driver or firmware updates for that printer and Big Sur.

Hi,

Do you have a specific model (including a suffix) within the Samsung Xpress M202x laser printer series?

For example, models mentioned in About AirPrint - Apple Support are printers supporting the driverless AirPrint technology. These models do not need separate drivers (drivers/software from the printer manufacturer may or may not add functionality).

If it is an M2020 (no suffix), I would suggest that you try to reset the printing system, and re-add the printer, to begin with. Check whether the operating system suggests a driver.

If this does not work, you may want to carry out a few experiments with other drivers. However, please note that an experiment could lead to software conflicts. You may have to erase and reinstall everything on the computer. Data may be lost. A hardware problem is unlikely, but it is impossible to guarantee anything. So, if you proceed, you must know exactly what you are doing. It may not work at all. Make sure that you have multiple backup copies of important files before you start.

The M2020 is in a list in an HP article https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c06520117. This list contains printers with drivers that can be used under macOS Catalina 10.15. Since these are 64-bit drivers, there is a chance that a UPD driver could be used with macOS Big Sur as well (however, as indicated earlier, it is equally possible that it does not work at all). If you want to run a test, the file would be the Samsung Universal Print and Scan Driver V3.92.00 (https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/printers/SS/Print_Common_SW/Samsung_Mac_10.15_Driver_V3.92.00.dmg). Reset the printing system between tests.

Hi iaincrow,

You may want to check your network settings (printer and router). For AirPrint, Bonjour must be enabled.

It could be a good idea to print a network settings report (Home screen: Setup -> Device settings -> LAN settings -> Print details).

This printer uses 2.4 GHz.

If necessary, reset the printing system and re-add the printer.

Hello kittygal94,

Would that be a B3340dw? If so, it is mentioned in About AirPrint - Apple Support as a printer using the driverless AirPrint technology. AirPrint appears to be the only supported method for macOS 11 Big Sur, so you should not need any other driver. See the following general articles about how to connect and configure. If available, try WPS for a quick connection to the router.
