Printers compatible with Big Sur

Does anyone know where I can find a list of printers compatible with Big Sur? Have just updated OS and old printer no longer supported. When I shop for a new printer, none list Big Sur as compatible OS.

If you have an Epson printer go to this webpage for the new driver package (I have a WF-3640 - the page will be different for different models).

The weird thing is that I later got an update from Epson's software updater with a raft of new utilities and installing them broke my ability to scan, so had to go back and re-install the package at this link. It all works normally now. The Apple-supplied driver didn't include scanning functions. Also, make sure you're on the same network as your printer, if you have more than one.

Hi,

According to the the manual (http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00208215, pp. 3-4), this printer has one USB and one parallel port. Are you using USB, or has a print server been added?

Anyway, to begin with, have a look at my reply above regarding an HP LaserJet 4 Plus. The HP LaserJet 1320 series is mentioned in the same supported printer models article. You may want to carry out a test in order to check whether a driver from the (Dec 11, 2020 post date) HP Printer Drivers v5.1 for macOS could be used for your printer. If not,, the LaserJet 1302 appears to emulate both PCL and PostScript, so it should be possible to use a (macOS) generic driver as well.

Addendum

A web translation appears to indicate that a version 10.85 driver is used with the PX-402A for macOS Big Sur.

A 10.85 driver (there may be variants) is used with many other Epson models and macOS Big Sur. So, if necessary, you could perhaps just try a driver for another printer.

It may be a good idea to reset the printing system first:

Hello again,

AirPrint should be enabled on the printer, but it would not be a bad idea to verify that it really is:

Would it be correct to assume that the HP PageWide Pro 577dw MFP is connected to a Wi-Fi network/router (wirelessly, or via Ethernet to a LAN port in the router), and that your iMac is connected to the same Wi-Fi network? That is, you are not using a USB connection to the printer.

It is important that the router allows Bonjour/mDNS (you may want to check that this is enabled in the router settings).

You could use an iPhone (or iPad) to check whether the 577dw would be selectable as an AirPrint printer when you try to print from there.

If necessary, try to reset the printing system and re-add the printer.

I was also surprised to discover my Canon Pixma MG5350 was not supported when I setup my new Big Sur (M1) Mac mini. I contacted Canon Europe and they responded “We do not have any Information yet, if there will be Drivers produced for the MG5350 Printer so far”. Really frustrating as I can no longer print photos. I don’t know whether to wait for Canon to provide drivers or just switch to a HP printer. I don’t want to spend the money on a new printer, but HP printers seem to cause the least headaches, especially when printing from iPhone or iPad. What to do with my cartridges and photo paper?🙄

>I also have an epson artisan 837 and that will not work.

Hi,

If there is a problem with a USB connection, try Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

Have you tried to add the Epson Artisan 837 as an AirPrint printer? The model is mentioned in About AirPrint - Apple Support as a printer supporting the driverless AirPrint technology, meaning that it can be used without a separate driver. Drivers/software from the printer manufacturer may or may not add functionality.

If necessary, try to begin by resetting the printing system.

I went to HP website, found our old printer and driver for Big Sur. When I clicked on the link for the driver it will download it but when I try to install it I receive an error message stating “Apple cannot be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software. This software needs to be updated. Contact developer for more information.” Good luck with contacting HP Support. I was not able to contact them.

I have an HP Laser Jet Pro MFP M29w. The software does not allow scanning in Big Sur. It is out of warranty and therefore HP will not provide any software or firmware. Their HP Community advisor sent me firmware for HP LaserJet 3020 which froze the printer. It is now useless.

I therefore bought a new OfficeJet 9015e. It will print and copy but not scan using Image Capture. After hours with both Apple and HP support HP finally admitted that they no longer offer software for printers with expired warranties. They also admitted that the OfficeJet 9015e will only scan using HP Smart app. HP Smart does not have the features of Image Capture and is clumsy to use. I am returning the DeskJet.

I too am looking for a scanner/printer that is compatible with Big Sur and functions using Image Capture.

I can only reiterate my experience with an Officejet 4650 - purchased some years ago - that initially it didn't work with Big Sur (and the M1 chip) but, for whatever reason and after I had been tinkering around (including if I recall downloading a driver), it began working - the "it" being both printing and scanning functions. Don't know anything about "Image capture".
