4th Gen 2020 M1 Mac mini bluetooth issues with Magic Mouse2

Just got the brand new Mac mini (M1, 2020 8gb and 256gb - macOS big sur 11.0.1). The bluetooth connection between my Magic Mouse 2 and the mini drops during use (2-3 times an hour). The drop is very odd too - it always drops twice in quick fashion (it drops, I wiggle the mouse and click, it reconnects then immediately drops where I wiggle/click again and it connects for a longer period of time).

I worked with apple support who had me remove the plist files, but after rebooting I ran into the same issues. Any advice?

I have the mini connected via usb c cable to my acer 27" monitor. I use the same mouse, keyboard, monitor, and cable to connect to my 2018 MacBookpro 13 (Mac OS Catalina 10.15.7) and have never had issues. I even plugged in the MacBookpro after getting my mini to see if it was happening there again - nope. It's only the mini.

I have the same error on external ASUS USB-BT400 dongle, while opening bluetooth status window in Bluetooth Explorer on my MacBook Air:

updateChainPower error: -3903

2021-01-27 09:52:47 +0000 Apple80211Get(APPLE80211_IOC_BTCOEX_MODE) returned error -3903

updateChainPower error: -3903

Also I get crashes of Bluetooth Explorer every time I connect new device via BT dongle.

Apart this I have no any issues using ASUS USB-BT400 dongle and Apple Magic Mouse 2.

mmulet3, this is very disappointing. When you reported this to Apple via Feedback Assistant, were the automatically generated system logs attached to your response? I would hate for Apple to release 11.2 without the fix.

I bought my M1 Mac Mini through Costco, so have 3 months total to return my Mac, which leaves me 1 more month to see if any issues materialize or return. I will submit more feedback to Apple to let them know that you and others are still experiencing continued BT problems despite the 20D62 build.

So it’s been a while since I last feedback into this forum, I have the M1 Mac Mini, like many others I experienced the series of Mouse Connect/ Disconnect issues.

Magic Mouse 2 (space grey)

Apple Wireless keyboard (space grey)

I am running latest available big sur update 11.2 (20D62)

I have only experience mouse disconnects (no other Bluetooth drops) and would experience these disconnects many times during my 7hr working day on the Mac M1 Mini, touch wood the last 2 days working long days I have NOT experienced any mouse disconnects, everything has been totally stable, I would like to add 1 point that maybe no one else has also mentioned (apologies if I missed) but I also have an iPhone and Apple Watch, at the same time is updated Big Sur I also installed the latest iOS 14.4 update for my iPhone and WatchOS 7.3, maybe that could be the vital step as I recall others who have reported to apple have been asked to turn off handoff and disable unlock using Apple Watch...

Maybe this is linked to iCloud and devices associated and maybes updating all devices has been the key to my success, hope this works for you folks..

Logic_psg,

Good point. I also have done the same (always updating iOS and MacOs to the latest developer betas), and noted it here on the forum. I have not experienced any BT disconnects either. But what I think is happening in this forum is that there is no singular document/reference which compiles the history and more current developments in this BT saga. Community members do not have the time to read through all the pages, and replicate what is actually working.

So, your news is promising. Since Apple should be releasing the final 11.2 possibly by the end of the week, I think it is safe for most community members to download the Apple Public Beta profiles for iOS and MacOS and download the latest respective RCs. Perhaps the updates have fixed most people's problems. Although mmulet3 has stated his has not worked. However mmulet3 has not mentioned if he has the latest iOS RC as well.

I updated my iPhone to iOS 14.4 last night. Since that time, I've had no more of the updateChainPower error: -3903 and I haven't noticed any more flakiness in my Magic Trackpad 2. Bluetooth explorer shows that both my keyboard and trackpad disconnect when not used for a while, but reconnect inconspicuously when I use either one.

This represents and improvement since before. Although I had turned off 2.4 Ghz Wifi and moved my router away from my M1 Mini, doing so had only slightly decreased the BT trouble. This morning, all seems good - but as all of you know, one morning or one day is not long enough to be certain this persistent problem has been improved.

Also, it seems clear to me that the issue where you need to plug in a wired keyboard or mouse/tablet after a restart is a different issue. It still exists — my workaround has been to plug in my Magic Keyboard 2 and sign in that way. When my Mini has fully booted up, I can remove the wire and both keyboard and mouse work (mostly? sometimes? TBD!) after that.

Yes. I just migrated 2 weeks ago from MacPro 5,1 to MMM1. I using 33" LG HDTV and 33" LG UHD Monitor both by HDMI (1 from MMM1 and 1 from USB-C hub adaptor) I have difficulty attaching a third monitor/TV as MMM1 only supports 2 mons, attaching a third by any port in anyway does not work. I have also used display port enable USB adaptor ... sometimes it works and some times it does not ... temperamental. I am also wandering if all the MM1 ports being fully utilised with mons and hubs etc. is cause and effect for the odd bluetooth behaviour ... but anyway, yes, no issues for 33" mons on MMM1.

So I have been having this issue on my m1 MacBook Air using Magic Mouse v2 and magic keyboard v2. Was driving me crazy.

I recently needed to go back and forth to a windows laptop so I remembered some software I had bought a few years ago called Synergy. It's a server/client mouse and keyboard sharing app. Theres a lot of them out there but this one works really well. Anyway...since I started using that I have had 0 disconnects. So I'm thinking because the server is monitoring for the mouse and keyboard all the time it's preventing whatever sleep/energy saving action is disconnecting our devices.

So you could run it and not even set up a client, just run the server and maybe that would prevent the disconnects. I realize it's not a solution, but if it's stops the frustration and productivity stalling.

OK, I've updated Apple Watch, iphone, and Mac mini to all of the latest available versions (beta or release). No problems so far, but do you want to see something funny? Look at the Bluetooth Explorer Link Quality Graph below (lower left corner). The red line is the link quality from my Magic Mouse 2. Notice how it starts at 100, and 3 times it drops and then returns to 100. The 100 level represents not using the mouse at all, the 3 drops are when I put my hand on the mouse like I'm going to use it, but NOT USING IT. Just my hand on the mouse reproducibly reduces the link quality. I didn't get any disconnect-connect-disconnect-connect issues, and I have no idea if it part of the connection issue, but it is pretty funny (and yes, I have been told I have a weird sense of humor). Same thing happens with the trackpad, not illustrated below.

Yes, it did autogenerate the reports, but they just emailed me asking for some logs from my iphone the next time it happened? That's confusing, in that it isn't an iphone issue that I am aware of, so I thought it was just a mistake.

I've updated the Apple Watch to the latest software, the iphone to the latest software, and the latest big sur update 20D64. I haven't used the M1 heavily, but no disconnect/connect/disconnect/connect issues so far, so I'm hoping that something changed for the better (the mouse does get a little laggy, though, but stays functional).

So, time will tell. I'll try to use the machine heavily today and see if it happens.

mmulet3,

I think the engineers want to see your iPhone logs because of the iPhone triggering the BT disconnects in certain circumstances. My BT problems were triggered by unlocking/waking my iPhone, with the M1 Mac Mini immediately disconnecting my Magic 2 Mouse and Keyboard. This trigger was pointed out to me by another community member.

It's very good that you're up to date on all your software versions for all your Apple devices. It appears that the latest software updates have addressed the BT issues, but apparently not the mouse/keyboard lags. Maybe there will be an 11.2 RC 4 coming before official release. If you encounter any more problems, it would help everyone if you could submit your issues and system logs to Apple engineering once again.

I've been using an ASUS USB-BT400 dingle happily with very little issues until I started backing up and updating to iOS/iPADOS 14.4 2 iPhones (6S and 11) and 2 iPads (Pro 2016 and Air 2018) when the Trackpad, Mouse and keyboard Bluetooth connection went absolutely crazy. Continuous reconnects/disconnects but even even the Bluetooth pref panel said the keyboard was connected it was unusable (no response from any key pressed). Resetting the bluetooth module (using a wired keyboard which I keep at hand) did not remedy it. In the end I restarted the mini m1 and reconnected all devices.

Another thing I noticed since the beginning of this week was that, after a shutdown/restart, the bluetooth devices would no longer reconnect when the dongle was in my monitor USB connector. I have now placed the dongle directly in the back of the mini m1.

I have had no mouse or keyboard disconnects since the latest beta release. iPad Pro, iPhone Pro, and iPad Air are still iOS v14.3.

I have also been using Feedback Assistant. However, I can confirm that Apple has been following this thread.

Prior to using the Feedback assistant, I was an early responder to this thread. After responding, I had both Apple Bluetooth Engineering and Apple Care contact me about my issues with the Mini M1. I gave them access to the Mini. I also provided a sysdiagnose file and a screen capture for 2 events at their request. (The screen capture documents the exact time so they know at what point the problem occurred in the sysdiagnose file.). Essentially, they requested the same information that you provide when using the Feedback Assistant (sysdiagnose/time/description of the issue).
