4th Gen 2020 M1 Mac mini bluetooth issues with Magic Mouse2

Just got the brand new Mac mini (M1, 2020 8gb and 256gb - macOS big sur 11.0.1). The bluetooth connection between my Magic Mouse 2 and the mini drops during use (2-3 times an hour). The drop is very odd too - it always drops twice in quick fashion (it drops, I wiggle the mouse and click, it reconnects then immediately drops where I wiggle/click again and it connects for a longer period of time).

I worked with apple support who had me remove the plist files, but after rebooting I ran into the same issues. Any advice?

I have the mini connected via usb c cable to my acer 27" monitor. I use the same mouse, keyboard, monitor, and cable to connect to my 2018 MacBookpro 13 (Mac OS Catalina 10.15.7) and have never had issues. I even plugged in the MacBookpro after getting my mini to see if it was happening there again - nope. It's only the mini.

So in summary, all you need to do to fix the issue is place the Mac mini upside down, use wired accessories, disable Wi-Fi in your house and neighborhood, and don’t bring an iPhone or Apple Watch near it.

unfortunately, my bluetooth problems persist - even after the update.

I was able to solve the constant, permanent interruptions in the past by moving the USB-C devices from the Mac to a separate USB hub with own power supply. Interference or insufficient power at the USB port of the Mac may have been the cause of the faults.

After that, I faced only occasional interruptions, maybe once a week. But the update has not been able to eliminate this.

Interesting: when trying to reconnect the keyboard, for example, the mac search for available devices, which can be tracked in the system settings. In such a situation, the Mac suddenly finds and display various BLE devices in my environment: Smarthome switch, lamps etc. all devices speaking Bluetooth Low Energy V 5.1.

Received M1 today. Cannot connect to my Magic Keyboard at all. Connects immediately to Logitech K380 ... and the Bluetooth connection dropped upwards of 40 times during a job that I had to time... one hour and five minutes. Sometimes it stayed connected for up to 10 minutes; sometimes for too short a time to type a complete word. The mouse is better but also iffy. A pair of AfterShokz phones also disconnected repeatedly.

It's like buying a Ferrari with three wheels.

I'm experiencing the exact same thing across three different mice. Two of them are Apple Magic Mouse 2 and one uses a wireless USB receiver. When the connection drops (at least 5 times in a work day), it disconnects and reconnects twice before stabilizing.

Curiously, I also have a Magic Keyboard and a Magic Trackpad connected that have NEVER dropped out once. That fact combined with me trying bluetooth mice and USB mice leads me to believe that this somehow may be a software issue and not a hardware issue. Otherwise my keyboard and trackpad should be exhibiting similar behavior.

Yesterday I have been contacted by Apple Support to investigate my issue (ie lagging mouse rather than disconnects). A very friendly Apple engineer interviewed me by phone and wanted as many details as possible. In addition I received instructions how to obtain log files when the problem occurs and send them to Apple. I have just submitted the first log file.

The expectation is that the problem can be solved by a software change (ie not hardware).

It shows Apple engineers do keep an eye on the discussions and identify users/cases who/which may be helpful in solving issues. Keep my fingers crossed.

Replying to myself here to add a correction. The second day I had the M1, I did an update - sorry: not sure of the details but presumably from the last to the latest iteration of Big Sur? - and it immediately behaved very differently: the Magic Keyboard made contact, and both it and the mouse seem so far to be working fine. Fingers crossed.

I tried this solution with my MacMiniM1 16MB memory and 1 TB storage running BigSur. It does not work for me.

My current solution is to purchase a hardwired USB Apple OS compatible mouse and keep the Bluetooth apple keyboard connected via the second USB A port.

I find it incredible Apple could release the Mac Mini M1 loaded with Big Sur and not already have known about this issue.

Apple, what date will you post a reliable solution and fix to this problem?

The MacMini computer is useless if one can’t operate it with a reliable mouse and keyboard connection. Apple, your careless and arrogant ignorance is deplorable.

"Apple, your careless and arrogant ignorance is deplorable."

The thing is that this is not a universal, and probably not a widespread issue. For example, my and one Mac mini has been working flawlessly for weeks now others have reported the same thing. So either it is a hardware flaw in a small number of Bluetooth hardware devices or it is some kind of software issue that only affects a subset of users.

That's not in anyway meant to minimize whatever issues you are having but my feeling is that the vast majority of M1 Mini users are satisfied. For me it's by far and away the best computer I have ever owned.

Apple HAS been resolving these issues; I know this thread is long, but if you read it in its entirety you can see over time how it has improved.

For most of us, upgrading all your devices (M1 Mac Mini), iPhone, Apple Watch to the latest versions HAS worked.

If it has not worked for you, then I suggest you contact Apple. They would probably be very interested in hearing from you and seeing logs off of your computer, in order to further assist you.

That's what a lot of us did, and it DID lead to a solution. Perhaps your situation is different, in which case looking at your specific situation/system setup will help them find a suitable solution for you.

My M1 Mac Mini is currently running:

Version 11.3 Beta 20E5172i

Apple Watch is currently running:

Version 7.3 (18S801) - not Beta

iPhone is currently running:

Version 14.4 - not Beta

As has been previously stated, the bluetooth issues seemed to improve greatly after 11.2.1. I can report that 11.3 is also stable; no bluetooth issues for the last 2 weeks and counting.

I understand it is frustrating, as I was very frustrated initially as well. But just think:

1) Big Sur is a new operating system

2) M1 is new silicone

There is just no way to completely test every possible scenario prior to releasing two major upgrades such as these. While I was not too happy that it took a couple of months to resolve the issue, I personally feel the issue has been resolved to my (and many others') satisfaction.

The M1 Mac Mini is otherwise an excellent computer, and more so now that the Bluetooth issue is better/resolved. I can edit 3 streams of 4K video simultaneously without breaking a sweat on a machine that cost $700. I know of no other $700 computers that can do that.

Many of us have had these issues and we've been very concerned while waiting for a fix from Apple. It seems that — as you wrote — apple did help with a macOS update that resolved the issues for the large majority of us. I appreciate what they did, and I also appreciate your very comprehensive description of this process.

While it's true many of us who are early adopters had issues, it's important to keep in mind that Apple has been responsive and that we now have one of the most amazing new Macs ever released. We need to keep in mind, as well, that there is currently no other manufacturer of home computers that is so innovative and working as hard to resolve any early release issues.

I'd also like to ask those who have problems with their Macs to read what has been written above, try to use the fixes that have been released, and if they still have issues, then to reach out to Apple and or this community for further support.

Feb 13, 2021 9:54 AM in response to mmulet3

I want to second what mmulet3 is saying here. I posted early on in this thread. I used an ASUS adapter for a while. After the 11.2 update my Magic Mouse 2 issues went way. I seemed to have Magic Keyboard issues still (which were not present initially), and used the keyboard wired for a while. After 11.2.1 came out I tried using the Magic Keyboard again with Bluetooth, and I haven't had any issues. Fingers crossed.

I do still have issues using my Apple Watch to approve ApplePay and other authentication issues. I suspect this is not related to Bluetooth though. I also had a problem with Sidecar on my iPad. Logging out/in to my iCloud/AppleID fixed that.

I'll also agree that the M1 mini is an amazing device. It sits behind my display and never makes a sound not matter what I do. It's spooky, really. New silicon, new OS, Rosetta 2. Some issues? Sure. But I'm getting better support from Apple than I am on a small, simple piece of hardware from another company.

FYI I posted ten days ago that, along with many other users, I had terrible Bluetooth issues with the Mini out of the box. I did not know that I might need to update the OS (I guess that wd have been obvious to some users) - but nor did anything here or elsewhere online seem to suggest that that would solve the problem. (A lot of talk about "still waiting for a patch.") BUT when I did update to the latest build of Big Sur, the Bluetooth issues immediately and completely vanished. Also, Apple contacted me right after my post to ask whether I was still having the issue - which by then I was not. All fine now.
