4th Gen 2020 M1 Mac mini bluetooth issues with Magic Mouse2

Just got the brand new Mac mini (M1, 2020 8gb and 256gb - macOS big sur 11.0.1). The bluetooth connection between my Magic Mouse 2 and the mini drops during use (2-3 times an hour). The drop is very odd too - it always drops twice in quick fashion (it drops, I wiggle the mouse and click, it reconnects then immediately drops where I wiggle/click again and it connects for a longer period of time).

I worked with apple support who had me remove the plist files, but after rebooting I ran into the same issues. Any advice?

I have the mini connected via usb c cable to my acer 27" monitor. I use the same mouse, keyboard, monitor, and cable to connect to my 2018 MacBookpro 13 (Mac OS Catalina 10.15.7) and have never had issues. I even plugged in the MacBookpro after getting my mini to see if it was happening there again - nope. It's only the mini.

Mac mini, macOS 11.0

I may have "fixed" the issue with the Magic Mouse disconnecting and reconnecting repeatedly. System Preferences/Bluetooth/Advanced...uncheck "Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer". The issue was happening all morning (and since I received the M1 Mac Mini) and has stopped since I unchecked the box. I am using a USB Keyboard, so that is how I will wake from sleep. So far, so good though.

Just an update from my discussions with a Tech Support advisor today....

I provided them with a video screen recording of the disconnections by using any AirPlay related UI buttons e.g. Sound preferences, Music or any other audio app that has the airplay icon. Tapping on this instantly causes all BT devices to disconnect. I also provided the console logs for a triggered disconnect using this method.

The support advisor has also added this community discussion to my support ticket case notes. They did inform me that the engineering team are aware and investigating the issue (based on comments / status updates in my ticket). This does not at this stage seem to be stuck in first line support but has made it far enough that I get the feeling it is actually being looked at seriously.

Based on the above, I would advise anyone reading this who is having bluetooth connectivity issues:

* Raise this as a support ticket and ensure you provide links to this community discussion thread

* Try some of the things that myself and others have done to trigger the disconnections reliably

* Provide any information you can surrounding how your issues are being triggered and include any actions that resolve this for you e.g. Turning off WiFi on the M1 Mac (which is what stops this completely like I believe almost all other cases)

I would expect at this stage we will have to wait for updates from Apple offical via beta's and final release notes of Big Sur. If I hear anything back directly via tech support I will update this discussion.

p.s. Whoever can do so - if this discussion is still marked as resolved - please change that :)

Note to others with this issue: After delaying unboxing my mac mini M1 till after the holidays, Apple online sales just approved my mac mini M1 return a few weeks outside the 14 day return window without quibble due to the bluetooth connectivity issue. Option of: 1- full refund or 2- try a replacement first with option to return. Provided FedEx return label immediately to my email for free return. Informed that replacements are about 2 weeks out from time they receive the return although they will try to expedite. If the replacement (or Big Sur 11.2) doesn't fix the issue by then I will be able to return it within a new 14 day window. for a full refund. Thanks Apple!

UPDATE: Apple already has a new mac mini replacement scheduled to arrive Feb 3-10.

I concur. I resorted back to old Magic Mouse and have not had any issue since past 48 hours till now (hope I'm not jinxing myself now). When I first started with the MiniM1 I used old battery install Apple wireless keyboard and Magic Mouse 2. I had on the key board the occasional lag/disconnect not reported by the system and would need to press the power button on the keyboard to wake it up so to speak, on the MM2 it would disconnect and reconnect a couple of seconds later. Resorting to the older MM(1) seems to have resolved both problems. I have no issues either with BT connection for headphones and speakers.

Hello everyone,

Been following this, as I'm affected by the same issue. Running a M1 Mac Mini & using Logitech's MX Anywhere S2 mouse and Craft keyboard.

Here's a funny thing, might be related to the issue or not. But for me the problems started with a new monitor, which has USB-passthrough and into which the Logitech dongle was connected. So I'm not using the Logi devices via BT, but the Unifying receiver. This was connected to the display's USB-ports, which again was connected either via TB3 (My Intel MacBook Air) or HDMI (M1 Mac Mini). The Mac Mini needs to be connected also via an upstream USB-cable, to be able to use the display's ports.

Now, the lag was awful and totally inconsistent. I'd already ordered a wired mouse to overcome the issue until a fix, but had also decided to move to a bigger screen. Here's the punchline: the new display is connected exactly in the same manner as the old (above), but the lag disappeared. I'm cured.

Key difference between the two monitors: The old one had USB 3.1 ports, the new USB 3.0. So far that's the only thing that has changed, as the cabling etc are identical and even the cables themselves are the same. So for me the USB standard seemed to do the trick.

I have narrowed it down significantly and have identified something interesting today.

  1. Per prior suggestions, I turned off 'Handoff' on all my devices and restarted. This helped. Prior to this, when someone called my iPhone, a notification would appear on my computer display and the mouse pointer would stop/disconnect/reconnect etc nearly 50% if the time.
  2. However, I also discovered that when I use Airdrop from my iPhone to my computer, a notification would appear and the mouse cursor would stop responding.

What makes #2 interesting is that the mouse disconnect/reconnect does not display. The mouse cursor will simply not move as if it is disconnected.

However, when I turn off the mouse using the switch underneath the Magic Mouse 2, the display states 'mouse off'. When I turn it back on, nothing appears and the mouse cursor does not move. However, if I turn it off again, the display will state mouse off again. This would seem to indicate that in instance #2, the mouse is actually still connected but the Mini is not allowing input.

I would like to ask everyone who have mouse/trackpad lags (not just the disconnection, but lag) whether you also have a monitor connected via USB C or just a USB C hub in general?

I noticed that while using a trackpad I get no disconnections (unlike the mouse) but there are constant lags every hour or so. As soon as I disconnect the USB C hub (which has an HDMI and a hard drive connected to) - the lag stops.

Just check around this thread and you’ll find enough users for whom the Asus dongle works (and probably answers to your questions). And for the costs I would just take the risk ... for me it has already worked for a couple of weeks now on my M1 Mini almost all the time. Even more important ... I got rid of the frustrating lags and disconnects immediately. For me it was €13 very well spent.

As Big Sur 11.2 is already on the RC stage, and should be officially released sometime within the next few days, I think it is "safe" for people to download the public beta profile for 11.2 now and begin submitting their bluetooth connection issues. I did note that another Community member stated that they have had no BT issues since downloading 11.2 RC. If this is truly the case, let's see what happens to the BT issues after the majority of community members have either downloaded the RC or official release of 11.2.

I just installed macOS 11.2.

First thing I noticed is I was able to enter my password over Bluetooth, without having to plug in a USB cable to the Magic Keyboard 2. THIS ONE ISSUE IS FIXED — I was never able to do this before.

Everything else is working well, including my BT Magic Trackpad 2 to BT speaker. But it has only been 2 hours, so as you all know from experience, I'll need to keep on watching this and report back after some time has passed.

Note: The Bluetooth Explorer app seems to have been further degraded, as the only part that seems to (possibly) work is the log window. The graphs, etc. are not functional. And even the (only) entry in the log is reported in UTC, not local time.

Replying to myself here to add a correction. The second day I had the M1, I did an update - sorry: not sure of the details but presumably from the last to the latest iteration of Big Sur? - and it immediately behaved very differently: the Magic Keyboard made contact, and both it and the mouse seem so far to be working fine. Fingers crossed.

I want to second what mmulet3 is saying here. I posted early on in this thread. I used an ASUS adapter for a while. After the 11.2 update my Magic Mouse 2 issues went way. I seemed to have Magic Keyboard issues still (which were not present initially), and used the keyboard wired for a while. After 11.2.1 came out I tried using the Magic Keyboard again with Bluetooth, and I haven't had any issues. Fingers crossed.

I do still have issues using my Apple Watch to approve ApplePay and other authentication issues. I suspect this is not related to Bluetooth though. I also had a problem with Sidecar on my iPad. Logging out/in to my iCloud/AppleID fixed that.

I'll also agree that the M1 mini is an amazing device. It sits behind my display and never makes a sound not matter what I do. It's spooky, really. New silicon, new OS, Rosetta 2. Some issues? Sure. But I'm getting better support from Apple than I am on a small, simple piece of hardware from another company.
