4th Gen 2020 M1 Mac mini bluetooth issues with Magic Mouse2

Just got the brand new Mac mini (M1, 2020 8gb and 256gb - macOS big sur 11.0.1). The bluetooth connection between my Magic Mouse 2 and the mini drops during use (2-3 times an hour). The drop is very odd too - it always drops twice in quick fashion (it drops, I wiggle the mouse and click, it reconnects then immediately drops where I wiggle/click again and it connects for a longer period of time).

I worked with apple support who had me remove the plist files, but after rebooting I ran into the same issues. Any advice?

I have the mini connected via usb c cable to my acer 27" monitor. I use the same mouse, keyboard, monitor, and cable to connect to my 2018 MacBookpro 13 (Mac OS Catalina 10.15.7) and have never had issues. I even plugged in the MacBookpro after getting my mini to see if it was happening there again - nope. It's only the mini.

Mac mini, macOS 11.0

I may have "fixed" the issue with the Magic Mouse disconnecting and reconnecting repeatedly. System Preferences/Bluetooth/Advanced...uncheck "Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer". The issue was happening all morning (and since I received the M1 Mac Mini) and has stopped since I unchecked the box. I am using a USB Keyboard, so that is how I will wake from sleep. So far, so good though.

I use Apple Magic Mouse, Keyboard and AirPods at the same time.

disconnecting Wifi and just working with Ethernet was the workaround for me.

Many people have problems with the Logitech Devices. I saw this: https://www.heise.de/ct/artikel/Logitech-keyboards-and-mice-vulnerable-to-extensive-cyber-attacks-4464533.html and thought: hm, maybe Logitech bluetooth combined with the T2 Security Chip, because some of them saying, with the logitech bluetooth dongle connected to USB all problems are gone.

I had a similar problem when I connected my Apple Magic Mouse. The audio connection to my Amazon Echo (which I was using as a bluetooth speaker) started skipping and breaking up. I know that communication parameters are assigned to a device on connection so I figured that when I connected the Apple Mouse, it auto-configured with a frequency that interfered with the Echo.

How to change it?? Hmmm. Suppose I removed the Echo from my bluetooth devices and then reconnected it when the Apple mouse was connected and enabled. That would reestablish the connection parameters and the MacOS logic should configure it correctly in a way that would not interfere with any connected devices. I tried it and it worked first time.

I suspect this is a general solution to the bluetooth problem discussed here. For brevity, the solution is:

  1. Determine what devices are interfering by disabling them one at a time until the problem disappears.
  2. When you have found which devices are interfering through fault isolation in step 1, remove one or both of them and then reestablish the connection. E.g., put them back on your bluetooth device list which requires that you rediscover them.

If this is a general solution (which it should be) your bluetooth problems should disappear. Let me know. Thanks!

Addendum to my post (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252078550?answerId=254319439022#254319439022):

The above set-up works also after a restart but was only persistent after an overnight shutdown after I disabled FileVault (unfortunately).

Also a few considerations regarding the choice of a dongle:

  • Many dongles available on the market do not work with MacOS. So be careful what you buy
  • Asus USB-BT400 is listed as Mac compatible on amazon.de but not on amazon.com. I took the chance and it works for me.
  • Logitech Unifying dongle will work with compatible devices (up to 6) but not clear to me whether I could use my Apple devices and B&W PS5 headset
  • Hideez also sell Mac compatible dongle but I ruled this one out after reading about poor build quality

That's crazy. I didn't even notice it but I just tried it and can confirm exact same behavior.

iPhone sitting about 5-10 inches away from my Mac Mini on the desk.

As soon as I unlock it, the Magic Mouse 2 is lagging like crazy. Never even had this kind of lag before.

When I lock the iPhone the lag goes away immediately.

I tried turning off handoff and then unlocking the iPhone - no lag whatsoever!

I then re-enabled handoff and the lag isn't here. Super strange.

After reading the latest updates to this issue thread, I noted that many M1 owners experienced the bluetooth disconnect/reconnect problem when they unlocked/woke their iPhone. I have been experiencing this problem for about 2 weeks now and did not know the problem trigger. I unlocked/woke my iPhone 11, which sits about 3 feet from my M1 Mac Mini, and the bluetooth connection immediately disconnected. The bluetooth reconnected about 5-7 seconds after it disconnected. I have sent this information on to Apple engineers via the Feedback Assistant that comes with MacOS developer and public betas.

A restart did the trick for me too.
I might need to try aeroplane mode if it's back. (or when...)

When I turned it all off, I noticed that I was running on LTE. I even turned WiFi off on the Mac Mini but to no avail.

So essentially I was experiencing these issues with only bluetooth enabled on the Mac Mini (no WiFi) and WiFi, Handoff and Bluetooth off on the iPhone.

OK... Good to know.

So I have found something else... Whilst an unlock of my iPhone is not currently trigger it on-demand as it did before, I have found that clicking up in the Menu Bar on the Big Sur Notification Centre icons (I have BT, Audio and WiFi in the main menu too) and pretty much every time I select the audio icon to show the list of audio sources.... all bluetooth devices disconnect.

Putting my iPhone in aeroplane mode and repeating the test shows that it was still an issue. Turning my iPhone off and it was still an issue.

I captured some of the console.log output whilst testing / triggering this and am looking through it now. Lots of logging that relate to AirPlay that is expected and I would guess would be expected when you select audio menu bar option as it scans for the known AirPlay devices... might be related.

If you start to experience BT stutters or disconnects again, let me know if clicking on any of these in the menu bar also cause the issue to trigger for you - particularly Audio.... and let me know if you have any AirPlay target devices on your network e.g. ATV, HomePod etc.

Having been living with the problem since receiving my M1 MacBook Pro, when a disconnection occurs I’ve recently been disabling bluetooth in the control centre on my iPhone, which immediately restores the connection to the Magic Mouse. Here the iPhone bluetooth appears to be the main culprit, the iPad doesn’t seem to have the same impact when bluetooth is enabled, although I’m continuing to monitor this.
