Cant' update to Big Sur - update not found the requested version of macos is not available

I have a MacBook Pro late 2013 and when I look for updates in System Preferences I have nothing to update. If I try to update to Big Sur by App Store I receive the following sentence:

update not found the requested version of macos is not available

I am very disappointed about this. All server status are on, the OS has been released 11 days ago and I have no VPN or other programs running that could create problems. Obviously I have enough space in the HD.

I had same issue on my MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017). It turns out that I had to install other updates, which were not shown in System Preferences. I've listed all available updates from terminal:

sudo softwareupdate -l

This command found two updates: "macOS Catalina Security Update" and "Safari14.0.3CatalinaAuto". After installing them with following command:

sudo softwareupdate -i -a

and restarting the system I was able to upgrade to Big Sur from System Preferences.

I’ve MacBook Pro late 2013 with identical issues. I even reinstalled clean Catalina 10.15.7 because I thought maybe my macos was busted since I never had clean install after the purchase. Didn’t help. Spoke with Apple support for about 1.5h on the phone and at the end they told me there is an issue with 2013 and 2014 and they put a block currently and are working on it. That was a week ago. I’m checking daily. No change. I’m willing to try clean install of Big Sur from usb but can’t find a direct download link with the latest Big Sur.

interesting, if I enable beta updates, the laptop starts updating to Big Sur beta but I stopped it because my goal is not to run experimental stuff. Just sharing info.

Same here, MBP 13" mid-2014. I saw the update for Big Sur in preferences system the week it was released, but hold it off due to multiple reports of that range of MBP being bricked afterward. Now I no longer see the update and, likewise, going through the App Store does not work (I get the same error message).

I too believe Apple pulled the update from the possibly affected MacBooks.

Same here, I have a 13' MBP mid 2014 and apple support told me to do it on macOS Recovery ( Basically you restart the computer and after the boot chime you do: cmd + option + r ) and I got to Big Sur recovery but when I tried to install gave me an error that said: macOS needs to install some data to install (something like that) and I couldn't install. Maybe try it like that?? If not try with apple support, give them a call, because they told me to call to get upper level support (Haven't done it) because they say its something they can't fix through chat

He updated his Mac by system preferences. According to my system preferences my Mac is updated (10.15.7), so I tried to use App Store, but I only obtained the warning window "update not found the requested version of macos is not available".

I'm thinking that Apple retired the update for 2013 and 2014 MacBooks pro, due to the brick issues experienced by some users. At this moment another friends of mine has a MacBook Pro like mine and he didn't update yet. I asked to him if he is able to download the OS and as soon as he can he will answer me.

You can check if you have a non-standard update source:

defaults read /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL

If CatalogURL does not exist, that's OK and the standard situation to pull from the non-beta updates. To force a beta source, you write this key (as root if needed with sudo)

sudo /usr/sbin/softwareupdate --set-catalog https://swscan.apple.com/content/catalog
