My machine normally opens with the screen from which I choose the User, but it has suddenly opened with what I take to be a Guest User screen, asking for a password, and I can't get out of this or go back from there.
I've tried various hard shut downs, but it still reopens at this same wrong screen, making the machine unusable.
MacBook Air 13″, OS X 10.11
You can go in users, then click in login options, unlock the lock to change information and check if auto login is enabled, you can check everything and customize it as you want.

Oh right, sorry, well in that case, you can try booting your Mac, first turn on your computer, then turn it in and immediately press command + R until the apple logo shows, go to disk utilities and select repair disk, this might help, for more detailed information enter this link.

No luck I'm afraid. I followed the instructions, but I don't have a startup disk, and it wouldn't let me reinstall OSX.
I ran the disk repair facility that it offered me, just in case, but when I restarted, I was just back on the same screen that I can't get out of.
