iPhone 12 Pro Max Camera Freezing/Black

Hello all. My iPhone 12 Pro Max’s camera freezes. For example I point it to the tv then after a few it just freezes. Like the image is frozen. So I swipe up to exit the camera app & then force close it. And I go back then it’s just black. I can still click on stuff but can’t take pics or videos. However if I scroll through Panorama, Slow Mo & Time Lapse I do see images & selfie cam works ok.

I have contacted Apple Chat & they ran a diagnostic & told me the hardware on my phone is good on their end. I’m on iOS 14.2.1 so my software is up to date. I’ve soft reset the phone multiple times. I even did an iTunes restore using a PC which was recommended by a local Apple Store but no dice. Is anyone else experiencing this issue? What’s the fix??

I’ve done iTunes software reboot reset whatever. I was convinced it was a software so I waited for 14.3 but it came & still had the camera ultrawide missing so I decided to chat with Apple Support for the third time to do another diagnostic on their end & they deemed that ultrawide has failed. Apple needs to do better with their QA & QC

Finally! Spent a whole day again on the phone. Now, I was supposed to upgrade via iTunes. Clearly the phone was not performing correctly and the Apple agent was getting frustrated - he was getting paid - I wasn't. Suggested I take the phone to an Apple store. I reminded him that the same thought had struck me on !!/14/2020 when I first used and noted the problem. We are supposed to stay indoors. Anyway - made the18 mile journey. No reason why they did not just mail me a new one. Went over all the same testing again - even though I had the case number. Then told me to leave the phone for 2 hours. Came back - guess what - needed a new phone. Camera was not working. Ultrawide lens, perhaps. My back up did not work well.....but finally....NEVER AGAIN!!!!!!!!

I’ve got my replacement unit yesterday. Fired it up & started setting it up. Downloading apps & what not I decided to open camera app & ultrawide was missing again & portrait mode was set on 2.5x with no 1x option. I was like ah shiiiiiiit not again. Waited till all apps were done installing & reset the phone & so far everything works in the camera department. Hopefully it stays like this.

I've been dealing with the camera crashing on my 12 Pro Max for over a month now. After a few days or maybe a week of functioning fine, suddenly any attempt to use the camera, sometimes just opening the app, will cause a crash. Only fix is to restart the phone, and then it's fine again for a few days.

Been in contact with Apple Support twice already. Every time their diagnostics say that every thing is fine. I've tried full resets through iTunes twice, once restoring from a backup and once setting up as new. Both times the crashes started again in a matter of days.

I am in the US. It’s not an issue all the time it comes and goes. In the middle of trying get important shots usually! Freezes, sometimes lens is cloudy, sometimes black. I also have problems with messages sending.. it takes forever sometimes never sends. This also comes and goes. I have restored the phone 3 times once from iCloud, then as new, then with my apple lap top doing the updated software with apple help. Still having problems I will have to call them back.

Spent nearly 2 hours with Apple support on chat/phone. Their solution was to restore the iPhone with my Mac And set up as a new device without restoring from the back up. Then use the device for at least a day and check if the issue persists. In other words if there is no issue when the device is set up as a new one then the issue is with the backup itself. In that case the solution would be to set up iPhone as a new device and do not restore anything from the backup which is annoying but not the end of the world. Although if it’s not backup related then their suggestion would be to send in the phone by a post for their technician to have a look at the issue. Which is funny because the issue is not consistently appearing all the time and upon reviewing the phone they might find that “there is no issue at all”. I was requesting for a replacement phone all the time and they refused to issue one. This has cost me already around 6 to 8 hours of restoring my device and hanging in the queues for Apple support to respond and I have gotten nowhere yet. By the way I am in the UK. It is appalling how poor the Apple service was in my situation.

also found the video of exact same issue on YT: https://youtu.be/NJLgUuiXOc0

I’m in Canada and I had a similar experience. Three conversations with Apple Support in total. A full reset through iTunes and setting up the phone as new was the last thing they suggested after the second conversation. Said that they were 99% positive that would do the trick.

Things were fine for about 5 days then the camera started crashing again. I had been inquiring about a replacement since the first conversation, but I was willing to try every other solution they suggested first. In the third conversation it was clear that they were totally stumped and agreed to send a replacement without much fuss. I’m now waiting for the replacement to arrive. If there’s no problem with the new device I’ll know for sure that it was hardware related all along. If it happens again, we’ll know that it is something to do with software.

If one buys a device and it does not work, out of the box, one has a right to return it for a replacement. Instead, I spent at least 96 unbilled hours checking this and that, before I got a new phone - which works perfectly, by the way. The QC with the cameras in the phones is poor. I would not buy an apple product again. The service is atrocious. The geniuses are paid for the 96 hours. My 96 hours are uncompensated through no fault of my own.
