iPhone 12 Pro Max Camera Freezing/Black

Hello all. My iPhone 12 Pro Max’s camera freezes. For example I point it to the tv then after a few it just freezes. Like the image is frozen. So I swipe up to exit the camera app & then force close it. And I go back then it’s just black. I can still click on stuff but can’t take pics or videos. However if I scroll through Panorama, Slow Mo & Time Lapse I do see images & selfie cam works ok.

I have contacted Apple Chat & they ran a diagnostic & told me the hardware on my phone is good on their end. I’m on iOS 14.2.1 so my software is up to date. I’ve soft reset the phone multiple times. I even did an iTunes restore using a PC which was recommended by a local Apple Store but no dice. Is anyone else experiencing this issue? What’s the fix??

Really sorry to disappoint you but there is no fix that I’m aware off and have spent multiple hours with the Apple support online and even have sent the phone for mail in repair - they were not able to fix it for me (they didn’t even identify it as an issue) and they just said that everything is “okay” as far as technician managed to see and this is how it is supposed to be. Obviously after spending 5 minutes with the phone they didn’t replicate the issue and deemed the phone OK. At long last managed to convince them that it’s not the way it should be and they FINALLY agreed to make a massive exception (sounded as if I should be eternally in Apple’s debt because they have agreed to exchange it) and send me a new device so now I’m going through that.


If you have bought it from Apple 10 days ago I urge you to contact them ASAP and request an exchange because they have said me multiple times that if I have asked for a new phone within 14 days from the delivery date I would have gotten that with no questions asked more or less but now because I have waited more than two weeks to ask for a replacement they are no longer this flexible and had to make an exception rather than just replace it. Action in the UK...

I have the same problem with my camera going black, freezing up. I have been in an important moment and missed the shot several times! The only fix for the camera is rebooting the iphone. Another thing that I have never noticed before is while talking on the phone.. I sometimes take a picture to send to whomever I’m speaking to.. it will not let me take a picture while I’m on the phone.. which is something I have never had a problem with. I hope someone is listening to us!

So everyone here has an iphone 12 Pro Max I assume? Has anyone gone to an apple store to swap out a new phone? I've reached out to apple support multiple times to get a diagnostic & they've told me nothing wrong with my phone. And whenever I restart it I can get all 3 lenses to work with all photo video pano slow mo time lapse for a few minutes or so then it freezes & just black screen. I am hoping it's a ios bug & it'll be resolve come ios 14.3

I have the same issue but with the 12 pro (not Max). It’s a couple of times a week and a soft reset usually fixes it. It is the most disruptive glitch I’ve experienced because it seems to freeze up the whole phone. Also it becomes warm pretty quickly when this is going on. I hope it is an iOS issue and is prioritized for fixing because it really takes away from the experience of using an otherwise great camera.

I’ve got my replacement unit yesterday. Fired it up & started setting it up. Downloading apps & what not I decided to open camera app & ultrawide was missing again & portrait mode was set on 2.5x with no 1x option. I was like ah shiiiiiiit not again. Waited till all apps were done installing & reset the phone & so far everything works in the camera department. Hopefully it stays like this.

If one buys a device and it does not work, out of the box, one has a right to return it for a replacement. Instead, I spent at least 96 unbilled hours checking this and that, before I got a new phone - which works perfectly, by the way. The QC with the cameras in the phones is poor. I would not buy an apple product again. The service is atrocious. The geniuses are paid for the 96 hours. My 96 hours are uncompensated through no fault of my own.

Sorry to disappoint you but I have had my stock apple wallpaper since the day 1 and the camera has been crashing like crazy across all the applications including but not limited to Instagram, Snapchat, Native apple camera; so in some niche scenarios it probably might be related to changing your wallpaper excessively but in my case for example it has nothing to do with the appearance of the iOS. Also, what i have noticed is that there are tens of crash logs generated daily by the phone under Privacy - Analytics. Tens of .ips files related to camera.

My wife started receiving her new iphone12 a bout 3 weeks ago. The problem being when the photo app was opened and u would tap to take a picture, nothing would happen. The app froze. If u closed the app and reopened you had a 50/50 chance it would work. So the iphone 12 was sent back right away but the wait was 4 weeks to get a replacement. But the iphone 12 pro was available, so she opted for that. Well after receiving the iphone12 pro, the same issue was found. So she contacted them again and said to send another iphone12 ( give it a second try). The iphone12 arrived and right out of the box it froze on the photo app?? So at this point my wife made the decision to hold on the the iphone12 pro and send back the replacement she just received. ( in hopes someone would dig deeper into the phone app) At this point she said that she will continue to call and get replacements till the issue is resolved. just to much money to spend on a phone that has issues and as is apparent with others as well. hopefully a resolution will come shortly....

I had the same problem the day after I purchased my IPhone 12 Pro. I took it back to where I purchased it and was told to do a factory reset. I did that and it seemed to work for a bit. I’ve done one or two updates since but now it happens when I take videos. Not all the time but enough to frustrate me.


my husband has the same exact phone bought on the same day and has never had that problem. I’ve never dropped it or gotten it wet. When it freezes the screen goes black then shuts down and re boots itself. It’s a pain because I’ve missed more pics and videos than I think is necessary. So you’re not alone but I’d also like a solution.
