When I try to transfer photos from Macbook pro to an external hard drive, a white circle with a cross appears and it doesn't let me transfer the photos... can someone please help?

Is the external hard drive otherwise writable? Is it in a Mac-compatible format?
Is the specific folder on the external hard drive protected against you?
Can you use Finder to copy a file into that folder?
The external storage must be formatted APFS or MacOS extended (journaled), and not be (or have been) used for time machine. It must have the 'ignore ownership" checkbox ticked. It should not be on a memory stick, SD or similar. It stands to reason that if you want any sort of reasonable performance it should be a fast drive with a fast connection.
