M1 MacBook Air external display keeps waking up

I have an M1 MacBook Air connected by USB-C to an LG 27UK850-W 4K monitor. The screen has been waking up frequently when the MacBook is asleep. It never exhibited this behavior with my previous computer, a 2018 15" MacBook Pro. Both computers are running macOS 11.0.1.

Basically what will happen is I will put the computer to sleep, and then every ten minutes or so the screen will "wake" but not fully "turn on." So the backlight will come on, but the screen will remain black, and then it will turn itself back off after a minute.

Doesn't seem like something that would be harmful, but it's definitely a bit annoying. If I remember to switch the monitor to a different input, it stops waking by itself and continues to charge the MacBook over USB-C, so that's been my workaround. Just curious whether anyone else was experiencing something similar?

I might have stumbled upon a fix, this might have something to do with a display driver or color profile not loading over usb-c.

I installed LG Calibration Studio and stopped having the issue, this app also seems to load the LG HDR 4K color profile. The calibration studio app can also be uninstalled and the color profile will stay.

I also noticed an improvement in colors and contrast on my monitor. They were a bit washed out previously compared to my MacBook Pro Retina 2014 connected to the same display via thunderbolt to display port cable. The MacBook Pro Retina 2014 loaded the LG HDR 4K color profile automatically.

Is this caused by darkwake?

Just run command: pmset -g log | grep "Wake Requests"

Check whether it is consistent with the notification time.

If so, you can try following:

0.update to macOS 11.2

1.Run command in terminal: sudo pmset -a tcpkeepalive 0

2.Run command in terminal: sudo pmset -a powernap 0

3.Make sure these options is not checked: "System Preferences->Battery->Optimized battery charging" and "System Preferences->Battery->Power Adapter->Wake for network access"

I have exactly the same problem. I use type-c to type-c (DP protocol). When I wake up after sleep, the monitor will just light up(no signal) and back to sleep immediately. I have to keep pressing the external keyboard or mouse to wake up successfully. When I use type-c to HDMI, there is no such problem.

I feedbacked to apple a month ago. Although I have conducted extensive investigation, checked various logs, searched many posts, and even learned the underlying mechanism of macOS wake-up. But no effective solution has been found.

I tried to update to 11.3 beta1, the problem still here. And it's only happens in clamshell mode.

I think it's a bug in bigsur. For the time being, I can only wait for apple to fix the problem (it may take a long time, I'm really disappointed).

If there is any progress, I will let you know as soon as possible.

Because when I checked this option, I used the command pmset -g log | grep "Wake Requests" and found a process called PowerUIAgent will be executed at a specified time, which will cause the MacBook to wake up.

The log is as follows:

2021-01-24 14:01:03 +0800 Wake Requests [*process=PowerUIAgent request=Maintenance deltaSecs=3600 wakeAt=2021-01-24 15:01:03 info="com.apple.obc"]

Hello, I found a workaround for me.

I bought this hub: https://www.amazon.de/Rayrow-Ladeanschluss-Anschluss-Kartenleser-Audiobuchse/dp/B07V2Z59LZ

I connected the display via HDMI with this hub.

To connect the Mac to the hub I bought this extension: https://www.amazon.de/CONMDEX-Verl%C3%A4ngerungskabel-Datenladekabel-Unterst%C3%BCtzung-Thunderbolt/dp/B08136H2S7

For me this hub fixed the issue, but not sure if this is 100% the case. Just wanted to share my fix. (MacMini M1 BigSur 11.2)

I think it's m1's software bug. When you connect any USB-C device (use dp protocol) to the Mac.The macbook will wake up itself every few minutes. Not only the monitor.I don't think Apple will be aware of this soon because there are not many people reflecting this issue.A temporary solution is don't put your MacBook into sleeping.Press command+ctrl+Q then press esc...I'm disappointed with apple for this issue. I'm waiting for the next generation of macbooks.

I've tested some docking stations and adapter cables. Darkwake only wakes up devices that have gone through the DP protocol(USB is also maybe) and most "type-c to dp" or "type-c to type-c" adapter is DP protocol. In fact, when you use typec to HDMI adapter, darkwake still occurs in MacBook, but it won't wake up your external device through HDMI protocol. This is actually reasonable.

But if your adapter follow other protocols, m1 mac will wake up your external device when darkwake occurs. I believe this is a common problem of M1 Mac.

When darkwake occurs in MAC, some external devices should not be awakened. Mac should only wake up the necessary devices. Obviously, apple didn't do strict testing. They only considered their own products and didn't test the external devices of various brands.

This wake request is related to usage report, to turn off that, go to "System Preferences->Security & Privacy->Analytics & Improvements", then uncheck all items.

It's a darkwake bug that only happens on a few monitors. Apple should provide an option to turn off darkwake. But I think it's very unlikely. So the solution I mentioned above is to turn off any functions or options related to darkwake.

I'm a little disappointed with apple. They are short of large-scale testing, and i believe m1 series macbooks are only experimental products...
