M1 MacBook Air external display keeps waking up

I have an M1 MacBook Air connected by USB-C to an LG 27UK850-W 4K monitor. The screen has been waking up frequently when the MacBook is asleep. It never exhibited this behavior with my previous computer, a 2018 15" MacBook Pro. Both computers are running macOS 11.0.1.

Basically what will happen is I will put the computer to sleep, and then every ten minutes or so the screen will "wake" but not fully "turn on." So the backlight will come on, but the screen will remain black, and then it will turn itself back off after a minute.

Doesn't seem like something that would be harmful, but it's definitely a bit annoying. If I remember to switch the monitor to a different input, it stops waking by itself and continues to charge the MacBook over USB-C, so that's been my workaround. Just curious whether anyone else was experiencing something similar?

I might have stumbled upon a fix, this might have something to do with a display driver or color profile not loading over usb-c.

I installed LG Calibration Studio and stopped having the issue, this app also seems to load the LG HDR 4K color profile. The calibration studio app can also be uninstalled and the color profile will stay.

I also noticed an improvement in colors and contrast on my monitor. They were a bit washed out previously compared to my MacBook Pro Retina 2014 connected to the same display via thunderbolt to display port cable. The MacBook Pro Retina 2014 loaded the LG HDR 4K color profile automatically.

usb c to dp wake from sleep is still wonky for me in specifically in clamshell mode . if i wake m1 air within 2 mins of sleep then it wakes the external monitor perfectly and outputs the display signal without any issue. but, when i wake the m1 air after 2 mins or say after an hour the external monitor wakes up perfectly but does not receive the signal output from the mac and goes to sleep again until i press any key on keyboard which outputs the display signal.

on the other hand usb c to hdmi is working flawlessly even in clamshell mode i can wake my monitor outputting display signal even after a long long sleep no issue at all. m1 macs are wonky when it comes to DP protocol. what is your experience? i hope atleast the macos 11.3 solves this issue.😔

Glad I found this thread, I thought it was only with me and this was driving me crazy. I thought the Macbook was displaying notifications on my external monitor, but I have this turned off and the issue still happens.

I have an LG 27UL850-W for 8+ months and the issue started last week after I got a M1 Macbook Pro. Never ever had it with my previous 2017 Macbook Pro.

Looks like one possible fix is turning off the monitor by it's own button/menu after you sleep the Macbook, but I'm not 100% sure this really works.

I saw a guy on a forum who used type-c to HDMI to solve this problem. However, he used a power tester to find that the power still increased to 6 watts every about 10 minutes. So in fact it still woke up, but it didn't wake up the monitor.

This is the powernap features of M1, which will be maintained at intervals during sleep.

With the commands and actions I mentioned above, you can prevent MacBook from executing these tasks.

You can use the command pmset -g log | grep "Wake Requests" to see which tasks are set to be executed.

yeah, i see that now, i am getting absolutely 0 dark wakes now after the update. i think the commands are well implemented here on 11.2. after going through some online posts i could see the dark wake issue has been a problem from many years to different generations of mac its not only specific to m1 but, still apple has not pushed any fix yet, which is really surprising. i think people get submissive when it comes to apple they are ready give their battery life during sleep for no beneficial reason and apple dont even think it a issue.

in my case, it used to select the lg27gn950 as a colour profile and i was having this issue of my monitor waking up frequently searching for signal and automatically going to sleep. unfortunately, i dont have my m1air with me as i am waiting for the replacement because it had colour uniformity issues.once, i receive my replacement the first thing i will do is installing the lg calibration studio.

Hey, i am noticing that after a restart my m1 air is resetting the dark wake commands and i have to manually feed the commands again after a restart or my external monitor starts waking up like before. I wonder this issue is because i am not running on macos 11.2rc and running on macos 11.1. Do you notice similar issue of darkwake command reset after every restart running 11.2rc on your m1 mac?
