M1 chip compatibility with Elgato

Can anyone tell me whether Camtasia, Elgato CamLink 4k and Logitech 922 are compatible with the new Mac Book Pro/Air....before I go buy one?

Thank you.

Yes, that means it is Not compatible yet. I already contacted El Gato several times and this is their last reply to me when I asked when will they have the problems fixed:

Thanks for getting back to me.

Unfortunately, there is little we can do at this time. Our developers are working on a solution, though I do not know what the progress of that may be.

Please let me know if you have any further questions. I will be happy to help.

Yes you are right.

I bought the The CamLink 4K and it does work in 4K but I get sound sync issues, and various errors which are usually resolved after unplugging / rep-lugging in the device or a restart.

in 1080 I didn’t find any problems though.

AverMedia has a ULTRA GC553 which does 4K30 4:2:0 (YUV)

and the more pricey BOLT GC555 which does 4k60 4:2:0 (YUV)

Magwell USB Capture HDMI 4K Plus

has an impressive 4k60 4:4:4 (YUY2/NV12 and more)

Epiphan has AV.io 4K which is a “broadcast card” and it costs respectively because it should give you ZERO problems.

it does 4K30 4:2:0 (NV12) and 1080p60 4:2:2 (YUY2)

So the Magwell would be your best bet, but also it costs 5x more than the CamLink4K

Hi

My Cam Link 4k works fine on the PC via USB 3 to OBS 4k 30 capture.

When I try it on the new M1 Mac mini 16GB it works fine at HD resolution but if I try to capture 4k from my Sony A6400 it will drop 1 out of 4 or 5 frames. The dropped frames are inconsistent suggesting a USB data rate problem on the Mac.

I tested it 100 different ways using all USB ports including via USB-C adaptors and clearing all other hardware off the Camlink USB channel. Fresh restart of the Mac etc. Even different capturing software.

The M1 Mac mini apparently can not receive the 4k coming out of the Cam Link 4k without dropping frames.

This is a problem.

Elgato have finally responded but it is no help...

Hello Phil,

We apologize for the delay since the case was under investigation at our Development Team.

Our developers could not reproduce the issue. We have tested on several applications including OBS.

While testing another product on M1 we found a similar issue with dropped frames in OBS. They are still trying to find out the real cause of the issue.

Unfortunately, there is nothing our Support Team can do to help you right now.

----------------------------

So I guess the message is do not buy any Elgato capture products for M1 right now. I have asked them to confirm that they have 4k to M1 mac mini working without dropped frames in OBS. As the message was a bit unclear.

Ah that is the same page I quoted from above but it is a bit vague

"When using Game Capture HD software, 1080p30 video seems to record correctly, but 1080p60 video may have recording and/or playback issues. We are looking into this issue now. As a workaround, when using Game Capture HD60 S+, or Cam Link 4K, you can record 1080p60 with OBS Studio."

Either way we are all finding that above 1080 30 there is a frame dropping issue. I have had an open ticket with Elgato since 12_27 they have not replied to me for a month now.

That's a question for the developers of the software for each of those things.

In theory, The M1 Macs can run almost anything the Intel Macs can. Either because the software is already optimized, or because you can use Rosetta 2 to emulate them.

In most cases the Rosetta 2 emulation has been found to be faster than running them natively on an Intel Mac. But being new, it may still have some issues.

Best to ask about software support on the forums or support platforms dedicated to those items as unless someone here has used all those items on brand new M1 Mac and confirmed they work everything is still in the trial stage to figure out what works and what doesn't.

Yeah the CamLink4K is a Plug and Play device, it will work on any device, including the M1 Apple Silicon.

as of this moment, there is no Streaming software that is running via ARM though. All my capture cards are lagging and going out of sync, so I stream on my older iMac. I read ClonerAlliance Flint 4KP Plus should be the best capture card for mac... can't vouch for it, but worthy of your time to do some research to see if it suits your needs.

Yes, here: https://help.elgato.com/hc/en-us/articles/360052527791-Apple-Silicon-Compatibility-M1-Chip-

I am in the same situation, trying to get HD60S to work with a M1 Mac like the MacBook Air M1 and it never seems to work. Sometimes it starts to work and than I just get an error. Which it all makes sense since they are still working on making it compatible

I thought I made it clear that I have the Cam Link 4k and it DOES WORK (so it is compatible) on my M1 mac, and that it gives me problems too.

I made a list of all 4K compatible cards and added the CamLink4K for reference.

The original question is this:

Can anyone tell me whether Camtasia, Elgato CamLink 4k and Logitech 922 are compatible with the new Mac Book Pro/Air....before I go buy one?

Yes 100% Epiphan - AV.io 4K works no dropped frames.

You can try the other cards I mentioned however if you want to save a couple $$

Mar 6, 2021 3:53 PM in response to TheAlikA

The camLink 4k only works correctly at 1080. It drops frames at 4k. So I think we can agree it is NOT working at 4k. Anyone buying a 4k capture device would expect it to work at 4k and it does not.

Are you saying your camLink 4k captures at 4k and does not drop frames?

"Yes 100% Epiphan - AV.io 4K works no dropped frames. "

Good to know thanks. Sad we have to go to $500 to get a working 4k capture for M1. I am hoping elgato work out the issue soon but they do not want to talk to me about it any more.

Mar 6, 2021 4:07 PM in response to Captain 3D

I’ve managed to capture 4K footage without dropped frames or out of sync audio with a direct thunderbolt adapted connection (without a usb3.0hub). But it was not consistent. On the other hand I had dropped frames even at 1080p with the CamLink.

it is not working CORRECTLY but it IS WORKING.

I always saw elgato as a “Mac Poser” they took the aesthetic, but have a “window first mentality”... from what I can tell they don’t make any products for the Mac, they only throw in some half baked, barely functioning support and call it a day. Their support team is not trained to take Mac requests seriously, they are trained to act like they are interested, but they have no intention of fixing your problem as they know they never made good drivers in the first place... so almost any company other than Elgato would be a better fit for streaming on a Mac.
