rosetta 2

I just received my M1 MacBook Pro. Does Rosetta 2 run in the background all the time or just when I am using an Intel based app?

Hi georgefromcovington,

Congratulations on your awesome new MacBook Pro! We're glad you've come out to Apple Support Communities for help. This is a great question.

Rosetta 2 is an extremely advanced translation layer, and intended to work seamlessly with the M1 processor. In most cases, it will go completely unnoticed when in active use translating apps designed for Intel processors.

Rosetta 2 is launched automatically by macOS when running an app designed for Intel processors.

If you're no longer running any apps designed for Intel processors, Rosetta 2 will not be launched, and so it won't affect the performance of your Mac.

Here's a great resource with more information:

If you need to install Rosetta on your Mac

Have a great day!
