Kernel Panic - MacBook Pro Apple M1 13 Inch

Ok I Keep getting a kernel panic. I have a SAMSUNG U32J59x , which is a 4k monitor connecting via DisplayPort 60Hz into the Mac USB C port of the computer. The other USB C is connected via a 'BELKIN media hub dongle" which the 61 watt Power Adapter from Apple and a Hyper X keyboard and Hyper X mouse is connected to. Also I have installed google chrome for Mac installed 'Version 87.0.4280.67 (Official Build) (arm64)'. I notice in the Kernel Panic log there is a 'dart-disp0' so I am thinking that that is related to google chrome and or samsung display and maybe the port of the usb its plugged into maybe a 0 or 1? Just a guess or maybe both issues are totally unrelated, whatever be the case I am attaching the Kernel Panic Log for inspection. If anyone has any insight on this matter please let me know.

Also I Just notice one more thing there is a 'Panicked task 0xfffffe166fa537f8: 3828 pages, 21 threads: pid 358: WindowServer Panicked thread: 0xfffffe16701d8cb0, backtrace: 0xfffffe304b4674e0, tid: 3557'

What is windows server have to do with anything in the panic log? that is kinda weird.

Also getting daily/nightly kernel panic restarts on my M1 Mac Mini (base model). I'm thinking it's likely USB -driver related? I also have a Samsung 4K monitor (60Hz via HDMI-2 direct) and an ORICO 1TB NVMe external SSD. I initially tried the SSD via USB-C but it panicked nightly so I switched to USB-A cable and it still panics. No Google Chrome or hub installed here. I just keep seeing USB scattered throughout the kernel panic log so I'm suspicious that's the culprit.

WindowServer is the MacOS task in charge of drawing windows for you to see on your display. (No relation to Microsoft Windows). that is the thing that crashed. I am not user why.

If you get more like this one, you have a trend that can be tracked down and fixed.

If this is a non-trend (all over the map in different routines for different reasons) it is likely to be a festering RAM memory problem.

Nov 30, 2020 4:11 PM in response to Grant Bennet-Alder

After spending most of the afternoon researching and reading a wide variety of forum posts, it appears my external ORICO NVMe USB-C 3.1 (10Gbps) SSD enclosure shipped with Realtek RTL9210B-CG firmware that was not "Mac Friendly". I applied a firmware upgrade on a Windows PC and -- so far -- no issues observed through several sleep/wake cycles and lots of file copying tests. I'm optimistic this was the root cause of my spontaneous disk ejections & reboots. I'll update you in a few days.

I am also getting kernel panic errors frequently. It is usually when I am running a game through Steam that I receive this error, but with 16GB of memory and the M1 chip that should be no problem whatsoever. My MacBook Pro freezes, then a black/pink pixel screen pops up, and finally the computer restarts. The error seems to be GPU related in a way. This is worrying and I hope they address it.

Dec 28, 2020 9:46 PM in response to blatny

I checked out your links blatny, and I'm fairly confident that FM20/21 is the culprit. I have not encountered this error using any other program on the MB. The fact that so many others have reported this issue pretty much confirms that this is a FM-related issue for me. My 16GB RAM M1 MacBook should actually run the game fine and is capable of much more, other demanding programs don't reset the computer, and there's no other explanation. Hope they fix this soon, love FM.

This occurs daily for me as well. Mac mini M1 OS 11.1. I am using HDMI to connect to 4K monitor.

Second MacBook Air M1 connected to Samsung 4K monitor via Hyperdrive USB-C Hub works a little better

Third MacBook Air M1 connected to Vizio 4K TV via HDMI through a OWC Thunderbolt 3 dock is the most reliable.

Other differences. Mac mini has bluetooth keyboard and magic mouse 2. Both Airs use Logitech trackballs and Logitech Wireless keyboard with USB dongle. I think there may be an issue with bluetooth wake, but it could be having an issue waking up because it crashed.

The daily crash happens when monitor goes to sleep. Support had me check "prevent computer from sleeping..." in energy preferences and we'll see what happens tomorrow.

Jan 7, 2021 10:57 AM in response to luminusxp

M1 Macs are having massive problems with kernel panics while attempting to put thunderbolt devices to sleep via power management. Apple is receiving TONS of kernel panic logs but pretends they've never heard of the issue when called via tech support. It appears Apple is pretending the issue isn't real.

You can find instances all over the internet with people complaining about kernel panics and many thunderbolt devices (monitors, raid arrays, TB hard drives, thunderbolt docks, soft raid programs loaded onto external raid arrays, etc). People are also complaining about monitors connected via HDMI. Apple has a massive M1 problem on its hands and so far is pretending it doesn't exist.

Lots of people are returning their M1 Macs before the return window closes because they're not getting any sense that Apple is even acknowledging the problem.

Jan 7th 2020 Update, also on BeachStreetNews.com again:

Good News:

Mac Mini M1 16gb/1TB OS 11.1 BlueTooth Keyboard Magic Mouse 2 did not crash for the first time today. Fix appears to be checking the "Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off" in the Energy Saver panel of Preferences. This was at the request of Melissa in tech support. Not a great fix but a fix none the less so hopefully Apple addresses it.

Bad News:

MacBook Air M1 16Gb/1TB OS 11.1 did crash again today. There is a pdf of the crash log on the Beach Street News blog post. I can't figure out how to attach it here. This crash appears to be USB related. This MacBook Air is connected to a Thunderbolt 3 port replicator. That in turn has a 4k HDMI monitor, Logitech solar keyboard with USB dongle and Logitech track ball attached. This is the second crash on this MacBook Air M1.

The only problem free unit is the MacBook Air M1 8gb/512MB with Hyperdrive (indegogo beta version) port replicator, Samsung monitor, Logitech keyboard and trackball, G-Tech external drive. This one is used exclusively for email, photo editing on Adobe creative cloud and web surfing on safari.

Jan 8, 2021 9:39 AM in response to Grant Bennet-Alder

That is the only thing I got from support after an hour, and so far on day 2, no crashes on any of the M1 machines. I think they know there is an issue and don't want to say it openly (yet). Who know there the "cpu sleep" rabbit hole goes.

I am sure that @seminolefans is correct that they are getting a lot of these crash reports and while it may not be the direct cause, it is a preventative fix for now.

Given that the M1 and Big Sur are both new to the market, I'll call them both Apple Consumer Beta ready, I am sure there are thousands of bugs to work through. For the first time since working at Apple, I joined the consumer beta program. Normally I wait at least to the .2 version of anything out of Cupertino.

And a correction to my previous post, the problem free unit also hosts weekly zoom meetings for the city artist council, but that is all the software it has. My M1Air has four pages of apps now and has only had the two USB crashes. I don't play games though. Only MS teams, video editing, graphics and business management related work.

My guess for gamers is that the Mac world is not very friendly in the M1/BigSur era just yet. I have yet to find a Mac based game I like so I don't know much here. X-Box One and PS-4 with Logitech Wheel both in the rack though.

If anything changes, I'll check back.

My base M1 Mac Mini crashes every hour or so whilst playing Football Manager 2020. I've tried all of the troubleshooting ideas in this thread (and beyond) but still no luck. Below is a copy of my error report - hopefully an Apple Dev can identify the problem?
