Mac Mini m1 bluetooth problems

Hi, I just got the new Mac mini M1 and from day one I have had big problems with the bluetooth connection. The computer is within an arms reach and has problems staying connected to my Magic Keyboard. It turns on and off. Several times. I even tried placing the keyboard on top of the Mini with out any difference. Some times I have to connect a wired keyboard just to log in. Sometimes the Magic Mouse also has problems. When using both with my old MacBook Pro 2010 they work perfectly.

There is nothing connected to the Mac mini other the the power and there is no ruter nearby that could interfere. The keyboard has fresh batteries also.

It looks like others also have this problem. Is there any one that has a fix. This is really frustrating.

Best regards

Mac mini, macOS 11.0

Thank you once again. But... Again, you are missing the point...

Your examples are describing clearly defined and repeateable hardware defects in third party (i.e. non Apple) equipment.

This is all to do with an entirely Apple "system" that is sometimes fully working (i.e. no apparent defects), which then displays very erratic behaviour which is sometimes inconsistent from one person's system to another.

If you take the time to read back all of the previous pages on this, you will see that many have replaced equipment:

  • Some have replaced keyboards - to no effect.
  • Many have replaced mice - to no effect.
  • Some have even replaced Mac mini's - to no effect.
  • Some have got success by turning off Wifi - but this is not a solution, it just hides the underlying problem.
  • Some have found success by forcing the systems to use 5GHz wifi - but again, this is not a cure for the problem - It's just using a '"workaround" to avoid running into the problem. And not everyone may be able to force 5GHz.
  • Some have even completely reset their systems and Yahoo! it all works - for about two the three days - and then it stops working again.

All of these "helpful" suggestions, to plug it in, to use something else etc., are a bit like suggesting I use the back seat of my car to carry luggage, simply because the central locking system will not open the trunk.

What we all need, is for the basic functionality to be met. And to do that, Apple must first acknowledge that their users have a problem, that the problem can be described and can be reproduced. Then - hopefully - the problem can be determined and fixed.

Agreed, there are ALOT of comments with the same issue as we are having, excluding the pseudo fix posts about bootcamp and Win10.. Then intel based Macs under Big Sur, which feels like and entirely different problem. I used to have a bluetooth keyboard and mouse attached to my 2019 MacBook Pro running Big Sur with no issue. Anyway guess we wait until 11.2 or some news from Apple on this issue..

Easy: Connect 2-3 Bluetooth devices like headphones, mouse, keyboard... play some music via iTunes (there you get immediate audio feedback) now connect to a 2.4Ghz wifi and use an iPad as side car and start downloading/uploading stuff - move your head around and I guarantee you will hear the Bluetooth issues and your mouse will be unusable in no time

I have a question:

what is the definitive answer: when mine is the only account on the Mini ( and I am the administrator, obviously) who should the mouse and keyboard be named for in the BT status info?

should it say

username’s Magic Mouse and username’s Magic Keyboard are connected.

or

Administrator’s Magic Mouse and Administrator’s Magic Keyboard are connected.

Mine says Administrator.

I’m just trying to figure out my disconnect issue, where I can use the keyboard to wake it from sleep, but then immediately cannot use it to type a password.

my thinking is that the keyboard is associated with the system admin account, but there is not a keyboard associated with my named account.

So I can wake it, (via he admin account, (which may be the default account for monitoring BT for activity to trigger the wake) but then the system reloads its last known state, which was my named account, and asks for a password. But as there is no keyboard associated with this account, it then has to scan to find an input device. This might account in the delay between waking up and then subsequently seeming not to have a keyboard connected. When it finds a keyboard, it has the same BT identifier as the one used on the Admin Account, so names it after that.

There is then a similar delay, whilst it goes looking for a mouse.

does this make sense? Could this be a thing, or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Hello Wadenz

You might think it is a red herring the thread goes back a few years and I had mouse and keyboard umresponsive until you plugged the mouse in and keyboard and I used a mouse with batteries in no pointer on mouse.

If your Keyboard is not set up for your country language your will have problems and that is with any make of computer.

That fix worked for me I was told there is different keyboards some keys are in different posistions.

But that fixed worked for me when I just had Catalina and big Sur nor bootcamp Windows.

Even so... I tried it anyway.

firstly making sure I had another wired keyboard and mouse, I then unpaIred them and then deleted them from the bluetooth list.

after a reboot with both of the BT devices switched off, I then went back into the BT menu and switched both devices back on.

initially they appeared as Magic Mouse and Magic Keyboard. Then I connected them both.

after doing this, they immediately appeared in the connected list as (my username’s Magic Mouse and my usernames’s Magic Keyboard.)

then I let it go to sleep for a couple of hours.

and now my problem seems to have gone. Please bear in mind that my problem was that I could wake it but then not enter a password because the keyboard was not connected at that point. But now it does work.

OK, I have also scanned most of the posts on this topic and have taken note that sometimes any particular “Fix” reported, does not remain “fixed” and later reverts to the errant behaviour. I will of course report back if I still have other problems, or if my main issue comes back.

But for now anyway, I did something and something changed - even if not fixed - at the very least.

Yes, I found that option.

it may also have some bearing on my result. If you hold the shift and option keys when clicking on the Bluetooth logo on the status bar, then you do get a load of diagnostic information and options, including the options to reset the Bluetooth adapter as well as return all connected Apple Bluetooth devices to factory original state.

I also did both of these for good measure.

like I said, at the moment anyway, It seem to be as operational as it should be, but I also know this issue is known for coming back. So I will be watching out.

Did the exact same process about 3 weeks ago and worked great. Have lost connection 2 additional times since then and had to re-do the shut down and re-connect process. Stays connected for days. Trying now to troubleshoot circumstances as to when / why it disconnects. M1 iMac mini with new magic keyboard and mouse,

I'm 3 weeks into this with Apple support. They want me to do all the hard work; factory resetting, changing this device and that, logging everything to the second and sending in system logs. They've blamed third party software, usb drives, hubs, cables....actually they have not got the slightest clue. Nice dealing with customer support but hardly a good experience after purchasing a mini M1. Wish I'd purchased from Amazon, they'd not quibble and I could have returned. Apple on the other hand...nothing. Find myself going back to my Windows laptop each time I need reliability. Was thinking of buying a M1 Pro laptop, not beta testing that too.....

Please don't!

M1 Macbook Pro 13" has just the same problems with bluetooth (in my case with Magic Mouse 2 Black). I can only use my old Magic Mouse (1) with batteries.

And I'm also dealing with Apple's support for two weeks, and still nothing but steps, that you mentioned above.

I'm starting to think that they will never release any update for this situation.

I wonder if stakeholders know that they are about to loose a lot of money with apple shares falling down because of engineers mistakes and tech support not being able to fix this issue.

Also there's really a lot of bugs in Big Sur. I think 2020 is worst year for Apple's reputation with such attitude to quality that we all have used to.
