Mac Mini m1 bluetooth problems

Hi, I just got the new Mac mini M1 and from day one I have had big problems with the bluetooth connection. The computer is within an arms reach and has problems staying connected to my Magic Keyboard. It turns on and off. Several times. I even tried placing the keyboard on top of the Mini with out any difference. Some times I have to connect a wired keyboard just to log in. Sometimes the Magic Mouse also has problems. When using both with my old MacBook Pro 2010 they work perfectly.

There is nothing connected to the Mac mini other the the power and there is no ruter nearby that could interfere. The keyboard has fresh batteries also.

It looks like others also have this problem. Is there any one that has a fix. This is really frustrating.

Best regards

Mac mini, macOS 11.0

Thank you once again. But... Again, you are missing the point...

Your examples are describing clearly defined and repeateable hardware defects in third party (i.e. non Apple) equipment.

This is all to do with an entirely Apple "system" that is sometimes fully working (i.e. no apparent defects), which then displays very erratic behaviour which is sometimes inconsistent from one person's system to another.

If you take the time to read back all of the previous pages on this, you will see that many have replaced equipment:

  • Some have replaced keyboards - to no effect.
  • Many have replaced mice - to no effect.
  • Some have even replaced Mac mini's - to no effect.
  • Some have got success by turning off Wifi - but this is not a solution, it just hides the underlying problem.
  • Some have found success by forcing the systems to use 5GHz wifi - but again, this is not a cure for the problem - It's just using a '"workaround" to avoid running into the problem. And not everyone may be able to force 5GHz.
  • Some have even completely reset their systems and Yahoo! it all works - for about two the three days - and then it stops working again.

All of these "helpful" suggestions, to plug it in, to use something else etc., are a bit like suggesting I use the back seat of my car to carry luggage, simply because the central locking system will not open the trunk.

What we all need, is for the basic functionality to be met. And to do that, Apple must first acknowledge that their users have a problem, that the problem can be described and can be reproduced. Then - hopefully - the problem can be determined and fixed.

So this morning it is still working fine. Seems the problem in my case was older software plist files and one program that needed to be updated. I only ever really had problems with my mouse doing the disconnect - connect - disconnect - connect a few times a day. I did have some funny keyboard issues (but only twice) where the typing speed slowed down and then the letters would all appear at once.

Mac Mini M1, Magic Mouse 2 and Magic Keyboard 2.

ASUS monitor, TP Link powered USB hub and an Apple DVD drive plugged into USB ports.

The engineers figured this out after I had my session and sent the diagnostic info from my Mac Mini.

So if you have not contacted apple support and gone through this process I highly recommend it.

Good luck.

After Apple asked me to dig into my system to remove files and check things for them (which I bluntly refused to do as I'm not on their payroll) I agreed to do a factory reset. BTW the Apple guide to do this on the M1 processor is not accurate there were new issues to deal with. I ran a base system for a week with no additional software or USB hubs or devices and still had the BT disconnect problem. It's not a case of if, but when the problem starts.

The fact there is no definitive solution from Apple tells me they they don't yet have a clear fix. I've also purchased an M1 MBP and should really try the MM@ on this. This would confirm a serious problem somewhere. Will do that.

So this is some kind of weirdness.

Was just about to post a reply to the above post and as soon as this site opened (in Google Chrome) my mouse did the double disconnect-connect thing. Has worked well since doing some stuff with Apple rep other than one disconnect yesterday.

What I was going to say is the breadth and width of issues is quite large. My worst problem is the odd disconnect-connect and had some keyboard delay once or twice quite a while ago. Obviously others have had much worse issues.

I wonder if somehow the browser can cause issues?

Any thoughts?

No I didn’t have any none Apple browsers installed. It also took two attempts to clear the machine down I order to return it, first attempt it got to the last 57 mins and gave up! Persevered with it for about a month, it was getting worse, couldn’t even wake it up without powering it down, will revisit when they solve the problem with the hardware.

Last week I followed the steps that Lamar MK explained in his video and everything is working OK now so maybe this will also help others?!

Thanks very much Lamar !! It worked for me!

In the mean time I also bought a Satechi Bluetooth keyboard for Mac and a Satechi M1 wireless mouse and I must say that they work perfectly with the Mac mini M1. I also like the fact that the keyboard can work with tree different devices that can be connected to by the press of a button.

Happy 2021 everybody!

Just got off an over hour long phone call with Apple. After talking to two different support people, they said they'll call me back tomorrow.

One thing I did notice, which I didn't see mentioned in this long thread, is the M1's new Diagnostic/Safe Boot mode.

In order to either run Apple's diagnostic, or boot in Safe Mood, you have to power up the M1 Mini by holding the power key. Don't let go, until you see the Gear Logo, then you can let go of the power key.

In order to run the diagnostic, or boot in Safe Mode, you have to use your mouse to make the selections. I could not use my Apple Magic Mouse to move the cursor. (I have a wired Macally mouse which worked)

The Apple support person confirmed that in this mode, the M1 Mini is not running Mac OS. Yet, the Apple BlueTooth mouse did not work. It appears to me (and the Apple tech person was inclined to agree) that this is not an OS issue. It might actually be a hardware issue.

Either way, I'm waiting for a call back tomorrow.

In Apple's defense, this is only an issue if I want to use a Bluetooth Keyboard, a BlueTooth Mouse/Trackpad. I suppose I could just buy one of Apple's wired keyboard or mice. If I had a time machine.

I've had my M1 Mini for about a month & just developed the Bluetooth issue. The issue has only occurred with one peripheral - Anker Soundcore 20 headphones. Everytime I used the headphones I had to go to the Bluetooth icon in the menu bar, deselect the headphones, then reselect them - otherwise I the sound continually skip & crackles.

No other Bluetooth issues have occurred. I use the Ethernet connection, a 1st gen Apple Wireless Trackpad, Logitech MX Master 2S mouse, & a Wacom Intuos tablet - all without any problems.

Earlier today I switched to Sony WH-XB900N headphones (my sister preferred the Anker) & so far they haven't had any issues.

The Sony's have BT 4.2, while the Anker's have BT 5, as does the Mini.

Hope this helps someone.

I received my new Mac mini m1 on January 6, 2020. I set it up and was highly disappointed when Bluetooth would NOT connect to the Magic Trackpad, AirPods and printer. I was reading the complaints on this website, someone suggested switching over to 5G on their WiFi system, luckily I do have both options 2.5ghz and 5G. The 5G setting was all I needed to do and everything works as it should, I hope this helps.

Similar issues here - just unpacked my Mac Mini M1 and migrated from my older Mini. I have an Apple bluetooth mouse/keyboard and I keep losing the connection - but ONLY if I touch anything in the menu bar! Otherwise the bluetooth is rock solid. If I touch anything in the menu bar (wifi settings, Airdrop, Display, Sound) the bluetooth immediately drops out. Craziest thing.
