Mac Mini m1 bluetooth problems

Hi, I just got the new Mac mini M1 and from day one I have had big problems with the bluetooth connection. The computer is within an arms reach and has problems staying connected to my Magic Keyboard. It turns on and off. Several times. I even tried placing the keyboard on top of the Mini with out any difference. Some times I have to connect a wired keyboard just to log in. Sometimes the Magic Mouse also has problems. When using both with my old MacBook Pro 2010 they work perfectly.

There is nothing connected to the Mac mini other the the power and there is no ruter nearby that could interfere. The keyboard has fresh batteries also.

It looks like others also have this problem. Is there any one that has a fix. This is really frustrating.

Best regards

Mac mini, macOS 11.0

Thank you once again. But... Again, you are missing the point...

Your examples are describing clearly defined and repeateable hardware defects in third party (i.e. non Apple) equipment.

This is all to do with an entirely Apple "system" that is sometimes fully working (i.e. no apparent defects), which then displays very erratic behaviour which is sometimes inconsistent from one person's system to another.

If you take the time to read back all of the previous pages on this, you will see that many have replaced equipment:

  • Some have replaced keyboards - to no effect.
  • Many have replaced mice - to no effect.
  • Some have even replaced Mac mini's - to no effect.
  • Some have got success by turning off Wifi - but this is not a solution, it just hides the underlying problem.
  • Some have found success by forcing the systems to use 5GHz wifi - but again, this is not a cure for the problem - It's just using a '"workaround" to avoid running into the problem. And not everyone may be able to force 5GHz.
  • Some have even completely reset their systems and Yahoo! it all works - for about two the three days - and then it stops working again.

All of these "helpful" suggestions, to plug it in, to use something else etc., are a bit like suggesting I use the back seat of my car to carry luggage, simply because the central locking system will not open the trunk.

What we all need, is for the basic functionality to be met. And to do that, Apple must first acknowledge that their users have a problem, that the problem can be described and can be reproduced. Then - hopefully - the problem can be determined and fixed.

Actually I haven't had any BT issues since my last update a few days ago. My M1 Mac Mini was shut down for the overnight and merely restarted the next day with no BT issues. Trying to trigger the dropped connection via face unlock/wake on my iPhone 11has not triggered anything since I shut down my Mac on the night of all my BT connection issues. So now I can only wait and see if anything triggers the BT issues again. I hope some other community member will update 11.2 to the latest beta so that we can get a better sense if beta 2 has fixed the issue.

Wow. That's great news. Now the other issue that I have with my M1 Mac Mini is the lower read/write speeds using an external NVME ssd (Samsung 970 EVO Plus with Jeyi SSD enclosure USB 3.1 v2 with Realtek RTL 9210 chip) connected to the Mac directly to its Thunderbolt 3/USB 4 port. I'm still getting Write/Read speeds of 805/726 after the beta update (should be closer to 1GB/Second). Perhaps this is a hardware issue that Apple will address with the next iteration of the M1x Mac Mini.

from what I gathered from reading numerous posts on Google, the Samsung SSDs run at their expected potential speed on non M1 Macs as well as if connected to the Thunderbolt 3 port on M1 Macs. Additionally, it appears that using external Thunderbolt 3 or USB (3.2 or lower) hubs/docks also solves the speed issue as the hubs/docks have their own chip controllers.

So I installed the latest Beta last night hoping it might fix the bluetooth and lo and behold this morning it just did the disconnect-connect twice thing.

So I am not sure why there are all those articles talking about Apple finally admitting there is a problem and how it will probably be fixed in the next Big Sur release? Unless it is still not in the beta.

Anyone else have the latest update and did it fix your issues?

Yes. I dowloaded the 11.2 developer beta yesterday afternoon. As I stated in my previous post, my Bluetooth issues were not appearing after I reset my M1 Mac Mini after a day of Bluetooth disconnects. So I cannot be sure if the 11.2 beta 2 update has fixed the issues. I am very disappointed to hear that your BT issues have not be addressed even after your update to the new beta.

Yes it is disappointing and frustrating. Like I said though, I hope they maybe haven't included the fix yet. Maybe it will come out as a stand alone update or something?

That said, all we have seen as "proof" that they have even admitted the problem and are working on an "imminent" fix is second-hand information from a journalist who says they told him that. Wish we could actually see a statement from Apple itself.

I am lucky in that my only problem is the irritating disconnect-reconnect twice issue.

Anyone else out there tried beta updates and has it fixed it for you?

As mentioned previously I have had the bluetooth problem on my M1 Mac mini. In the end I got my old wired Apple Pro keyboard and mouse. With them was packed an old Apple Bluetooth Mighty Mouse. I connected this to the mini and have had no problems with disconnection issues this passed week. Thinking Apple had solved the problem I connected the Apple Wireless Mouse and keyboard again but after 30 minutes the connection problem began again, but only with the newer products, the Mighty Mouse continued on without mishap. I am now using the wired keyboard (no disconnection issues :-) and the Mighty Mouse. In case anyone understands the system report I have included it for both mice. The main difference, to my uneducated eye, appears to be the "Bluetooth Core Spec" that is 2 on the new one and 1.2 on the old.

I had the same problems with a new Mac Mini M1. This solution worked for me:

Reset Bluetooth – hold down shift/option on the keyboard and click on the Bluetooth icon in upper right corner of the display. Select Reset the Bluetooth Module. Go back to Bluetooth in System Preferences and restart/connect all Bluetooth devises.

Hopefully this will work for you!

I use BT only for headphones (Sony MDR-1000X), which I used for three years so far with various Mac and PC and iPhone without problem. I bought Mac Mini M1 last week and audio is dropping every five or ten minutes for several seconds. It is so annoying, although it doesn't disconnect. It looks like interference problem. I switched them back to old Intel Mac Mini, which lies next to it, just bit further. It works like a charm again. So I wouldn't blame the interference anymore.

Now, I've connected them back to MMM1and turned off Wi-Fi on M1 machine. So far it work and I don't need to be connected to my local Wi-Fi, I use LAN which is incomparably faster, but Apple Watch unlock does not work, Air Drop does not work and what is the most important I've paid for a full computer!

I still have a week to return the computer back to Apple and I'm seriously considering it. I also had 2 kernel panics already when I copied files to NAS over SMB (never happened with Intel MM). The machine is a beast, but these issues are making me to drift from Apple after 15 years :-/

The issue returned immediately when I turned Wi-Fi back on. Interesting thing is, that it drops from time to time and it has no correlation with Wi-Fi usage. I tried to send large files either from and to NAS over Wi-FI (2,4GHz) and over AirDrop, and it doesn't cause any interference - sounds play OK. It just drops in same occasional manners. The easiest way how to cause the drop is to turn Wifi off/on. I guess it starts to search the frequencies and cause the interference and this probably happens from time to time in normal regime.

Anyway, it is Apple who should solve the issue as we pay the premium price. We expect nothing less than premium products (which is not true anymore).

Ive just arranged to send mine back for a full refund. Ive looked online and this is a problem that has continued from the previous generation of Mac Mini's. I can see that some people have suggested work arounds etc but this should not be necessary. This is a new Apple computer that does not connect seamlessly to even Apple bluetooth devices. I have an older McBook Pro, iMac (my wife's), iPad pro, iPhone and this is never an issue.

Quite frankly I'm appalled that Apple would release yet another Mac Mini with the same ongoing problems with something as basic and ubiquitous as Bluetooth.

I'm going to soldier on with my MacBook Pro even though I wanted a desktop machine to avoid battery degradation from it being plugged in most of the time.
