Mac Mini m1 bluetooth problems

Hi, I just got the new Mac mini M1 and from day one I have had big problems with the bluetooth connection. The computer is within an arms reach and has problems staying connected to my Magic Keyboard. It turns on and off. Several times. I even tried placing the keyboard on top of the Mini with out any difference. Some times I have to connect a wired keyboard just to log in. Sometimes the Magic Mouse also has problems. When using both with my old MacBook Pro 2010 they work perfectly.

There is nothing connected to the Mac mini other the the power and there is no ruter nearby that could interfere. The keyboard has fresh batteries also.

It looks like others also have this problem. Is there any one that has a fix. This is really frustrating.

Best regards

Mac mini, macOS 11.0

Thank you once again. But... Again, you are missing the point...

Your examples are describing clearly defined and repeateable hardware defects in third party (i.e. non Apple) equipment.

This is all to do with an entirely Apple "system" that is sometimes fully working (i.e. no apparent defects), which then displays very erratic behaviour which is sometimes inconsistent from one person's system to another.

If you take the time to read back all of the previous pages on this, you will see that many have replaced equipment:

  • Some have replaced keyboards - to no effect.
  • Many have replaced mice - to no effect.
  • Some have even replaced Mac mini's - to no effect.
  • Some have got success by turning off Wifi - but this is not a solution, it just hides the underlying problem.
  • Some have found success by forcing the systems to use 5GHz wifi - but again, this is not a cure for the problem - It's just using a '"workaround" to avoid running into the problem. And not everyone may be able to force 5GHz.
  • Some have even completely reset their systems and Yahoo! it all works - for about two the three days - and then it stops working again.

All of these "helpful" suggestions, to plug it in, to use something else etc., are a bit like suggesting I use the back seat of my car to carry luggage, simply because the central locking system will not open the trunk.

What we all need, is for the basic functionality to be met. And to do that, Apple must first acknowledge that their users have a problem, that the problem can be described and can be reproduced. Then - hopefully - the problem can be determined and fixed.

I concur that this works.

In my particular case, even though I had a Magic Keyboard and Magic Trackpad (original versions) paired with the new Mac mini M1, they worked for a couple of days, then started disconnecting. I tried to pair them again, to no avail.

However, I also own two MacBook Pro's, a 15-inch 2019 and a 13-inch 2011. Well, the devices were trying to connect to the 15-inch MBP.

Last night, we turned on the 13-inch MBP and the same thing happened.

The reason, as I understand, is that these devices at one point were originally paired to those MBP's, and I never removed them.

By performing the Shift+Option and then clicking on the Bluetooth icon in the menu bar, I performed both a Factory reset all connected Apple devices, then Reset the Bluetooth module. After that, I re-paired the devices and they've been working for several hours.

And I must retract what I posted regarding the use of Shift+Option+[Click Bluetooth Icon] and factory resetting the Apple connected devices.

Keeps disconnecting.

It is frustrating. I'm using a Logitech mouse and keyboard with a USB dongle to reconnect, but this needs to be fixed by Apple. I do not have any 2.4 GHz WiFi devices, the devices are at arm's length from the Mac mini M1.

Does it help to turn WiFi completely off? I suppose you have 5GHz WiFi, but I'm just curious whether it is same issue I'm having with BT sound. It does not disconnect for good, just interfere for a while (0.5-2s) from time to time. I'm sorry whether I'm hijacking this thread for it could be different issue.

Does anyone know if MBP 13" with M1 is also affected by this problem? I'm so stupid I'm willing to pay another 50% of the price to switch from Mini to Laptop.

My problem has been limited to my Magic Mouse 2. I proved that the issue is only with that mouse the the M1 mini by replicating the problem on two different M1 mini's, then going back to Intel MacBook Pro for two weeks with no issues. Anyway, AppleCare decided to send me a new mouse. I assumed this wouldn't fix anything (and I'm still not convinced), but I've been using the new Magic Mouse 2 for 4 days now and no disconnects. I am hoping that by writing this, I will jinx it and the issue will come back. I just don't believe it was the mouse.

Just downloaded Big Sur 11.2 RC, and iOS 14.4 RC. For those who want it, you will need to load a Developer beta profile to get the RCs today. Or you can load the Public beta profile to get the RCs maybe tonight or tomorrow.

For some reason unknown to me, I have not had any BT disconnect issues after resetting my M1 Mac Mini a couple of weeks ago. I also downloaded Big Sur 11.2 beta 2 and iOS 14.4 beta 2 about a week ago and still no BT issues. Now that the RC candidates are out for 11.2 and 14.4, and Apple's release note explicitly state that BT issues have been addressed in the RCs, I really hope that everyone else on this thread will report the issue as being fixed finally.

Same issue on a new Mac Mini M1. Bluetooth was ok for a bit and then my magic keyboard and mouse 2 constantly drop out and can only be reconnected with the charging cable.

I've tried all of the suggestions. I've tried holding shift and option and selecting the options to reset the bluetooth module and factory reset all connected devices. It clears for a bit and then comes back. I've tried moving the Mac Mini around the desk. Tried it with only one monitor instead of two, and tried it with each monitor individually (one is USBC and the other HDMI). I've tried just having the keyboard and mouse and no apple airpod headphones connected. I've tried moving all other bluetooth items and my phone away from my desk and removing my apple watch. I've tried it without my Lacie time machine drive connected/running and also without any USB connections. I've switched my wifi to run only on 5ghz which has helped a bit but the connection still drops e.g. when I bring my phone in front of me to reply to a text.

I give up! I've now got wired headphone and have charging cables to the magic keyboard and mouse 2! Looking forward to the coming software update to resolve this. Incidentally I have got a Macbook pro mid 2014 and a Macbook pro 2017 which have no bluetooth issues with all of the above running at the same time on the same desk.

Big Sur 11.2 RC running fine. As well is iOS 14.4 RC. Still haven't had a BT incident for almost 3 weeks now so can't tell if the RCs contain the actual fix. One thing 11.2 RC did fix was the connection drop out to listening to an online live stream radio using only cellular data, with wifi turned off, and verbally asking Siri to connect to that live stream. Prior to the RC, the stream would connect for about 5-8 seconds, then drop. Looking forward to more feedback about the RCs from community members.

Update on my bluetooth issues. Didn't originally have any until after I had the machine for a few days. I bought a Samsung T7 external SSD connected via USB-3 for Time Machine backup, extra storage. Reading some posts here and elsewhere, realized the issue may be the USB-3 cable?

Anyway, for what's worth, since unplugging the SSD I've had no bluetooth issues whatsoever with Magic Mouse 2 or the wireless keyboard.

Anyone else notice that it's related to USB-3 connections? Just speculation.

Most people buy cheap USB cables and these cables will have poor or non-existent shielding. This will definitely effect Bluetooth performance, however for the vast majority of users I don't think that is causing the Bluetooth issue, just making it much worse.

I too am suffering from the grey screen of death. For what it's worth, I am not sure that it is a bluetooth problem as I dug out an old wired keyboard and mouse and continued to have the same problem. The situation was improved, but not cured, by changing HDMI lead.

I have now spoken to the "senior" Apple support dept twice. I find it surprising that they seemed to have no knowledge of a problem that occupies 17 pages of this forum and has 600 "I have this problem too" responses. Even though they apparently do not monitor (or take an interest?) in these discussions, surely others have called it in?

But at least this helps demonstrate that my mac is not fit for purpose, though I have agreed to try a replacement while retaining my right to my money back.
