Hello community. I try to use my Imac as an external monitor. Connected via Thunderbolt connection with a Macbook Air. Unfortunately the Imac desktop appears on the macbook air and not the other way around. (OS X High Sierra) Thanks for any ideas and help!

Won't work, you need it to have 10.13.6 or earlier, please remember Target Display Mode has been discontinued for 5 years. IMHO I would recommend retiring the 2011 and getting yourself an external display for your MBA, save money on expensive cables. Also, please remember Mac are computers and were never designed to be external displays for other devices.
